PB today! - Video added
« on: May 17, 2010, 11:50:22 AM »
Benched 3 plates a side for 10 reps.

Guy had hand on last rep though said he never helped.

Felt very pleased. Surely I am close to 4 plates a side bench now!

Not looking for pats on the back just very happy and wanted to share with my GB brethern!

great. my best is 4 reps with 3 plates. shoulder issues prevented me from going heavy lately though.

watch out with the heavy weights. the bigger weights the bigger the chance of injury!

Cheers dude aye I have been thinking that myself. As long as it is relatively light (6-12 reps) injuries are maybe a little less likely to happen.

Rule of thumb is usually if you can get 10 reps with a weight you can get a single with one plate extra. You get 10 reps with 3 plates on your own and 4 plates for a single is well within your grasp.
Strong lifting Ursus, what weight d/bell are you using on d/bell bench,i`m guessing 140s for a set of 8-10 reps.

you rly think that? I have to disagree... even though 3 plates for 10 is RRlllly strong :P, I jsut don't think so... benching two plates for 10 = not 315

but maby 315  is allready so strong that it's another powerlevel, who knows... I couldnt' do it...

I don't do DB incline anymore. I am doing incline BB also though in teh coming weeks I intend to reintroduce them with only 105'2 as by that stage I am very tired and can't lift anywhere near what i could fresh.

I have done 130's on the incline for reps but it was a while ago. I am stronger now.

I would not bee too sure about that rule. Particularly with light weights or very heavy weights. For 2-3 plates a side it is not a huge amount out though.

Thats how its always worked out for me,and if you get a single rep with a weight, then increase it to 2 reps your maximum will have risen roughly 10lbs.so if you get 3 reps with 3 plates you will get 1 rep with 3 plates and 5kg,you get 5 reps with 3 plates you get 1 rep with 3 and a half plates, you get 7-8 reps with 3 plates you get 1 rep with 3 plates and 15kg,all the way up to 10 reps equals 1 rep with 4 plates.Keep in mind i`m talking euorpean weight are in kilos,so a 20kg jump each side is 40kg(88lbs),and thats why i say when you increase your 1 rep max by one rep your strength will have gone up 10lbs.

Good lifting Ursus.

Regarding the "10 reps with N plates --> 1 rep with (N+1) plates)" thing, I've always found my ability to lift heavy depends entirely on how often I lift heavy.  For example these days I hardly ever do a working set of less than 6-8 reps.  When I try to do a weight that I should easily be able to get three or four reps with, it feels ungodly heavy.  I think there's definitely something to be said for the neural adaptations that come with frequent heavy lifting.

Hmm, interesting theory. I can do 3 plates for 10 reps on the bench, but I've always chickened out of putting a fourth plate on there just to try a single. It always seemed a bit beyond me but I don't know if its just purely psychological. Think I might try this out and get back to you to let you know if it works.

Well done, Goudy!

One of these days I might manage 2 plates myself.

I don't think he's "running" anything - Goudy has always said he's natural.

If you do,just do 3-4 reps with 3 plates, save some strength,do 2 reps with 3 plates and 5kg,a single with 3 and a half, same with 3 plates and 15 kg,and that set will give you an indication as to wether you have got another 20lbs strength left in you to go for 4 plates.

Cool - yeah I was thinking of doing something like this - I think doing a 90lb jump in just two sets is asking for an injury. Probably why I've never attempted it before.
