Candidate’s Words on Vietnam Service Differ From History

At a ceremony honoring veterans and senior citizens who sent presents to soldiers overseas, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut rose and spoke of an earlier time in his life.

“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam,” Mr. Blumenthal said to the group gathered in Norwalk in March 2008. “And you exemplify it. Whatever we think about the war, whatever we call it — Afghanistan or Iraq — we owe our military men and women unconditional support.”

There was one problem: Mr. Blumenthal, a Democrat now running for the United States Senate, never served in Vietnam. He obtained at least five military deferments from 1965 to 1970 and took repeated steps that enabled him to avoid going to war, according to records.

The deferments allowed Mr. Blumenthal to complete his studies at Harvard; pursue a graduate fellowship in England; serve as a special assistant to The Washington Post’s publisher, Katharine Graham; and ultimately take a job in the Nixon White House.

A LOT of people pulled shit like this concerning service and the Vietnam War. A great book named "Stolen Valor" was written about pieces of shit that fake their Vietnam War service or say they saw/did things that they did not. Lots of stuff on this subject. My dad hates John Kerry because of this shit.

These people can rot in hell.

Damn. Opens the door for Schiff should he decide he wants to campaign outside of Greenwich.  :-X

Most ivy leaguers are normal people like the rest of us. Not only that, there are multiple universities (including state schools) that are on par with the ivy leagues now.

I dont believe most Ivy leaguers are like the rest of us.Most have never worked a day in their life. They dont understand what it is to decide between paying the months rent or the months car payment. Most have never had to make a pay roll. They have lived a life of luxury and wouldnt understand the first thing how most of us live.

Interestingly enough is the fact it took this long to come up. This guy has been CT's Attorney General for as long as I can remember.

I agree.  He was "unaware" he had made "misplaced words"?  He "misspoke"?  What the heck does that mean?

He flat out lied about serving in a war.  Utterly disgraceful.

Blumenthal meant "during" not "in"

Just watched his press conference.  Says he meant "during" Vietnam, not "in" Vietnam and he just misspoke.
