Smith helped bring hip-hop to the mainstream (and made a killing in the process), leading to his acting and directing career as well. And, it all started with him as the "Fresh Prince".

As for Hammer, 20 years ago, he was THE TOP GUY in the business. "U Can't Touch This" was the runaway SMASH that propelled him to megastardom. And for all their criticism, many of these "gangsta rappers" rode his coattails to mainstream success. What I find ironic is that for all the talk about giving back to the community, Hammer was one of the few that actually did it, unfortunately to his detriment (he tried to take every kid from Oakland who could half-sing or dance or play an instrument on tour with him).

The rappers who are doing commercials, taking ownership in sports franchises, etc. today are simply doing what Hammer did back then. Yet, he got called a "sellout".
