go with concrete.  easy to maintain, ball bounces way better than clay and probably cheaper.  But if you are rich go with grass.  Sevatase would know too

Wear pads, or just stay off of them.

Depends on what kind you enjoy playing on.  Clay is mostly Euro players and is a finesse game.  I got my ass whipped many a times by old times cause I tried to be Andy Roddick in my early 20s.

Hard courts are typically American.
Grass is UK and a couple other areas.
Carpet is indoor and very, very fast.

I've played on all and each has their pluses and minuses.

Unless you're an advanced player like Sev or myself, I'd go with a hard court.

I grew up playing on hard courts, but I do like the composite (synthetic clay) courts.

I'm nervous about pulling the trigger on the purchase until I get the backyard renovation quotes in hand.  The original estimate I had for the  concrete court alone is no longer doable, and I haven't gotten the grading cost yet either.  This neighborhood sucks.

I played as a kid, was capt. in high school and played in Europe.  I'd never give it up. My shoulder is fucked now so I don't play as much.

I'd rather just buy a ping pong table.

Yesterday I played in a ping pong tournament and I won a bar of soap, a tube of toothpaste and a box of tissue.

Sev was a top pro in the sport, his advice is gold.  One day if he stuck at it he prolly could have played the likes of nadal and federer.

Even though we were poor, I had the neighborhood fun house as a kid and there's nothing like that around here.  We could play football in the yard - though often played in the street - and I had a dirt half-court for basketball (too bad there are no pics!).  Later, there was a wooden fence that you could hit or throw tennis balls against.

I still can't believe I moved to a neighborhood with no tennis courts.  I just took for granted that there were some here.  I grew up in the 'hood and only lived a block away from the public courts.

Epic trying to re-live my childhood, only on a higher level. lol

Ah the old groom-pong, let the gross guy win ploy.  When you 'win' a razor and a thong: worry.

I played Div. I college tennis in the U.S.
I also spent some time in Sweden while in high school (Holvikken and Malmo) playing some tournaments.
I don't play at all anymore, as it isn't that much fun for me to not play competitively.
But, if I were to build a court, I would have Har-Tru.  Your knees will thank you.
