A lot of good backs have been built without deads.

Lol.
Pullups or chins are one of the single best excercises there is for back. Right up there with deads.

deadlifts are overrated.

bb rows on the other hand, are essential.

I am surprised no one mentioned dumbbell rows or t-bar rows.

Why use them? Are they hitting some secret muscle that barbell rows aren't?

Well, maybe not dumbbell rows, but I always feel tbar rows more in my mid back. I feel like I can get a better squeeze when I use a narrow grip.

And you might be correct about barbell rows being the only thing you need. However, realistically speaking, people would get bored only doing bb rows. I do them every workout, but I surmise people do other exercises to offset boredom. That's probably the main reason why.

For a good back.

Nasser did a lot of deads and still had a relatively pooh back. WIll Harris never does them and has a great back. Go figure. Chins or some kind if pull-down are definitely very important however.

For a good back.

technically you are right as the back only pulls the elbows backwards, and the upper back pulls the elbows upwards.

there is some argument for pulling the elbows down and backwards though as the pulldown/chin does.

but there's so much overlap that rows could even be on its own as the only requirement.

same goes for all other movements...chest is elbows forward and across- so only needs flyes or bench.

biceps only bring the wrist upwards towards the shoulder..so only curls- of any type.

triceps the opposite.

and so on.

Gotta take into account the position of the arm in relation to the torso and the initial stretch on the muscle for different exercises.

Eg. for biceps -> incline db curls vs. standing bb curls vs. preacher curls
for triceps -> overhead extensions vs. close grip bench vs. pushdowns

So I think for some muscles it's best not to limit yourself to just one exercise, though that's not to say you can't make great gains this way.

A lot of good backs have been built without deads.

But they dont have the same density and pure power look of a huge back built on deadlifts. You can tell if someone has a powerful build by looking at their back.

Well, true, but there is more to it. The triceps has three heads. One of the heads crosses two joints- shoulder and elbow. Thus, an exercise like triceps extentions also targets the long head of the triceps, whereas cable-pushdowns puts more emphasis on the two short heads of the triceps. To me, the effect of these two exercises is very different.
