I got the pleasure of meeting a 91 year old WWII vet today. As you may or may not know, I'm a 10 year vet in the Air Force myself.
I was in a grocery store and notice an older gentleman walk by with his hat decorated with various military pins. I struck up a conversation and he told me he was in the Army in WWII and Korea. He's 91, his wife is still alive and he's living the dream in the good ol' USA. He can't drive anymore cause he can't see that well but I would have never guessed 90s or even 80s. It got me choked up thinking of the experiences he must have endured that we just read about in history books or watch on television. I thanked him for his service and told him I could only wish to live as long as he and look so good. He thanked me for my service and we went our separate ways. It was really awesome and made my day and even had a tear go down my cheek...
AMERICA FUCK YEAH...
When I first moved back to Hawaii I got a job at The Vitamin Shoppe. This old guy use to come in all the time and get some supps. Eventually we started talking more I learned that he was a WW2 vet. He met his future wife when he was 17 and she was 16 and got married when she turned 18. They've been married ever since. At this time his wife was in the hospital and bed ridden. He drove to the hospital every day, every single day, to spend time with her. At my request he brought pictures of her. Those old black and white numbers that they had in those days. She was quite a beaut. He'd tell me how things were like duing the war. Some of his experiences. The close calls, watching friends die by your side, the fun times, the hard times when they didn't eat or drink for days.
I'd always get a little bit choked up after he would leave. Really exposed how inadequate I am as a man in comparison. How far as a society and culture we have fallen. This skinny, frail and grizzled old man just exuded class, integrity, dignity and honor. He inspired me to want to be a better person. But also made me realize that his kind are all just about gone.
If we fought the Germans and the Japs the way we fight the Muslims now we wouldn't have stood a chance.
