Bass is hands down the easiest instrument to play in a standard rock band setting, just play the root notes and stay in time with the drummer... that being said, it can also be one of the most exotic and complex instruments to play..

but that's when you get into stuff like jazz/fusion/hybrid shit

Yeah, in rock bands it's sometimes hard to find bassists, because bass isn't as poplular as drums, guitar, keyboards etc.

So a lot of times they'll just find some guy who wants to be in a band but can't play. They'll get him a bass. Make him practice for about a month and he's set.

I've seen it dozens of times. And that's why the bassists usually look like cracked out freaks. Cause they usually are a cracked out freak who got dragged into the band because "we need a bassist so we can start playing shows!"

And the funny thing is. They can usually play the songs well even though they are totally inexperienced.

It's cause what you said is bullshit.

Playing bass is very easy. You can take bass playing to higher levels and learn complex scales and styles. But playing typical rock music bass lines is very, very easy.

I'm glad you finally qualified your statement. That's more like it, Sekki. Had you said from the beginning that being a metal or rock bass player, your comment would hold a bit more weight. But you did not.

Playing bass, technically, might seem easy. But what about playing in a groove with a drummer, playing more harmonically advanced progressions against someone who may be playing a straight ahead I-IV-V progression, or learning to play slightly ahead or behind the beat? How about hearing a player use a quick change, or using the Lydian scale instead of the Major scale?

Playing the minimal amount of notes is easy, and in a rock setting it is. But just because it's in the rock style does not mean ALL styles, and all bass playing is easy.

There are lots of types of music where the bass has a very prominent role.. latin types of music, jazz, fusion, salsa, meringue, etc. lots of very complicated bass textures in fucked up time signatures that go from half time to double time in a beat.

despite of me not liking Slipknot for many reasons they are in fact a very very good band, very cleverly build up and marketed as well.
its just that for people like me anything the general public listens too is getting automatically boring for me.

I'm not sure if you realize that I'm "on your side," and I was merely pointing out that bass can be simplistic. Yet on an entirely different facet, it's overly complex too. Depends on style, textures, progressions, feel and who you're playing with.

Playing jazz or funk or blues or fusion bass is more difficult and it requires skill.

But I would say that playing guitar or drums is all around more difficult than bass. You can take almost any song. And it's likely that the guitar and drumming is more difficult than the bass, that's just true. It's pretty rare that the bassline stands out as the most difficult or challenging piece of the song.

Why because I don't like Slipknot but still understand the clever market strategy?
no I'm just somebody who understands music a little better than you, no surprise that you like Slipknot - I am sure you
jump eagerly onto any music bandwagon that you can see the popular kids in your school or neighborhood listen too (pretty fucking creepy)

I played the bass for a few years as a teen.

Cliff made me want to play bass for some reason growing up.

Bassists are nothing but shitty guitarists. Easily replaceable.

Go down to the local bar or crackhouse, put a bass in some random dude's hands, you've got your replacement.
i couldn't agree with you more only value if they are also the vocalist like phil lynott in thin lizzy or rob crill in the ancient group the grassroots.

There are so many bad bar/garage cover band bass players who just keep a beat playing a G note.  That doesn't mean playing a bass guitar is easy.  A good bass player is just as hard as any other instrument.

A bass is a guitar.  It just has four, five or even six strings.
