Please answer this distressing question.
« on: May 25, 2010, 09:49:56 AM »
I have question:

In a previous thread, someone stated that people that don't compete in competitive bodybuilding are not considered "bodybuilders." Someone else stated that since we don't compete in bodybuilding, we would just be considered weightlifters. However, if competing in bodybuilding is a pre-requisite in order to call oneself a bodybuilder, then wouldn't competing in powerlifting be a pre-requisite to consider oneself a weightlifter.

competitive bodybuilding = bodybuilder
competitive powerlifting = weightlifter

So, if we don't compete in powerlifting or bodybuilding, what are we?  ??? When someone asks what I do for fun or what my hobby is, what do I tell them? This is very distressing, and has caused me to regress into the fetal position. Please help.

if you train/diet purely for aesthetic purposes you are a bodybuilder

if you compete in bodybuilding contests you are a competitive bodybuilder

strength training for the purpose of strength in the deadlift, squat and/or bench press you are a powerlifter

strength training for the purpose of strength in the clean and jerk and/or snatch you are a weightlifter

lifting different heavy objects competitively or not you are a strongman

strength training to increase performance in a sport... you are an athlete in that specific sport... e.g. soccer player

a holistic approach to strength training, CR training and diet = fitness enthusiast, gym goer etc etc.

... and yes sometimes you may be part of something you don't want to be perceived to be associated with...

Well, I really don't follow a holistic approach to training. I guess I would fall between "bodybuilder" and "gym goer," but leaning toward bodybuilder.

Yes :(

Nonetheless, a distressing question that I pose.  :(

this is true

the other day, at the tanning place, i was talking to a girl about the difference between lotions that are "Bronzers" and lotions with "Tingle" that have "bronzers" in them.
In mid conversation, i realized how silly it was that we war talking about such a shallow thing when some child is dying of starvation in Burkina Faso and mentioned it to the girl
she didn't know what i was talking about
needless to say- she blew me

actually, I lied

I mentioned nothing about starving children in Burkina Faso

It sounds like you are having trouble with responses in social interaction in regard to your hobbies/interests.

What I suggest as many others here have done with this same issue is to start following MMA.

Through beginning to follow MMA you can:
  • despise bodybuilding
  • be skinny
  • always reduce an individual to your belief in their inability to fight
  • address your small man syndrome complex with fighting instead of muscle
  • still follow a niche sport and not be exposed to a huge array of talent like football
  • still have hopes and dreams of turning "pro" to the small size of the 'sport'

Hope this helps

This happened the other day:

Girl: "so what do you for fun?"
Sf1900: "Um, I really don't know"
Girl: "what do you mean?"
Sf1900: "well, I like to lift weights, but I don't know what category I fall under"  ::nervously bites nails::
Girl: "so then you're a bodybuilder"
Sf1900: ::begins to sobs:: "I just don't know anymore. It's all very confusing."
Girls: "you're sort of weird"
Sf1900: "I eat, sleep, and breathe bodybuilding. You don't know what its like to find out you're something your not.
Girl: "You freak: ::walks away:
Sf1900: "dont judge me."

If you are a bodybuilder who competes then you are "A competitive bodybuilder".... If you are a bodybuilder that doesn't compete, then you are just that, a "bodybuilder"

The Barbarian Brothers HAVE NEVER competed.... someone care to call them something other than bodybuilders????

Point is, if you live the lifestyle, diet, training, look, etc... then you are a bodybuilder, whether you compete or not!

The whole bodybuilder, powerlifter, weightlifter thing is played out.  The only things that matters is whether or not you're a cage fighter.

Whats the lifestyle BIG?

Diet, lifting, drugs (if chosen to use), goals.

Think about it this way, that male trainer on the show Biggest Loser, he watches what he eats, lifts weights, does cardio.... but is he a bodybuilder?  no he's not, his goal is not to build huge muscles and perfect proportions while maintaining optimal bodyfat... his goal is to be fit and healthy, so he does these things...diet, weights, etc in a manner to get him to his gaols.

Someone like me, I do the same things he does: watch what I eat, lift weights, do cardio....  am I a bodybuilder, yes.  Take out the competition aspect for a minute.  I'm doing the exact same thing that the dude above is doing, but with different intentions, qty, organization etc....

He may eat healthy say like 2200 calories with a more balanced diet...  where as I may eat healthy but say like 3500 calories with an emphasis on protein for muscle gains.

He lifts weights, but maybe he does particularly full body circuit training to focus on his fitness, where as I may be doing one muscle a day with a progressive resistance technique to emphasize muscle growth.

Does  that make sense?  Our lifestyles maybe similar, but they are not the same, primarily because our goals are different, and as a result we run our lifestyles differently.
