Serious question
« on: May 31, 2010, 11:16:45 AM »
How many of you under 200 pound beasts can bench a legit 300 pounds? When I say legit I mean no bridge, no bounce, and a slight pause at the chest. My PR is 255 at about a buck 70. Yeah I know that ain't so impressive. P.S. FYI, Tiger suposedly has or had a legit 300 pound bench.

Nope, can't do it.

I only db bench because I believe it's better for my shoulders.  Couldn't do 300 bb or db tho.

Like Tapeworm, I bench with dumbbells. However, I definitely can't bench 300 pounds w/a bb.

Even when I used to bb bench I was more efficient than the big guys because I spent my time doing the actual lift instead of loading and unloading all those cumbersome plates.

Its funny, because when I see people walk into the gym the first thing they do is barbell flat bench press. Is it really the best exercise for chest? if you're going to bench, isn't incline bench press more efficient anyway? I just think there is so much hype around the barbell flat bench press because Arnold used to do it a lot, and he had an insanely good chest. I mean, I could be wrong.

A year or so back, I remember some "beast" walking up to me and telling me I should do flat bench press. I asked him what was so good about flat bench pressing, and he was like "well, ya know, its just a good exercise, ya know." I guess he saw Arnold doing it, and assumed it was a great exercise for everyone. I am sure it works for tons of people, but never did much for me. To each their own.

Some call the barbell bench press the upper body squat, but I think that dips come closer to fullfilling that claim. As far as training the chest is concerned, I think that DBs are better.

Well, that is what I don't understand. Why has the barbell flat bench press become the bread-and-butter for chest exercises? Are there studies out there that show that the flat barbell bench press better stimulates muscle growth? Or does it have to do with seeing hundreds of pics of Arnold benching?

Actually I think it's because it's kind of a macho thing. And the fact that it sounds kind of silly to ask, "How much can ya dip" or "How much can ya dumbell bench" LOL P.S. Most bp champs have very large and strong tris, with average pecs, not all of them but most.

So, we can agree that its more of a cultural dynamic?  :D

True dat! But I've got to admit that it gets on my nerves when I hear folks make such claims when it's rather certain that it's BS. For example, tiger woods claimed 300 pound bp. Yeah it's possible that it's true, but I seriously doubt it. And there's a fella here on gb who claims 450 for 8 reps. If that is true then you're looking at a max bp in the low 500s which is very impressive lift!

When I was a kid like many of you, I weighed 185-190 and had not much trouble hitting 300 (or so) for a double.  But that really had more to do with knowing how to bench than simply being strong.

Now that I'm old and my shoulders are all fucked up from high-speed snowboarding accidents, I can't say that I'll ever see 315 again.  Waahhh.

I remember Nasser being asked how much he could bench at a seminar , 9 yrs ago.

He said ; " I have no idea what my max bench is and have NOT tried in years. I am a bodybuilder and find other moves like DB's for sets of 8-10 reps to be more productive for pec growth. If you are mostly concerned with benchpressing , consider power meets instead."

The best BP I ever did was 2 decent form reps with 405 in the gym ( Body wt 245 lbs) and a raw 390 with a pause in a meet at just under 220 lbs.
All heavy reg BP gave me was a bum shoulder. What cracks me up is watching some young buck trying to max on the bench with a spotter lifting 10 % of the wt and the lifter all contorted looking hehe.

A raw 390 at 220 is an impressive lift. Anyone who can bench twice their bodyweight is a beast. And a raw triple bodyweight BP? Well that would place one in a catagory of less than 100 who have ever done that, maybe even closer to 50.

Thanks. One does need to move some decent wt in some moves to gain mass.
In my humble opinion, most bodybuilders would a LOT better off to do good form heavy leg and back work instead of heavy reg benches.
