I really think that proper conditioning somehow super-changes ones metabolism, and this in turn allows one a license to eat as one pleases, plus I also think that it really helps with giving one a much more finished and polished look (conditioning) much more than just cutting calories would do. And this is based upon my own personal experience. I used to mainly do "anaerobic threshold" training, but I have a feeling that the true tabata method may be even more effective... Another good conditioning method that I used was interval training with a 2-min on/2-min off protocol.

Might be more convenient because you can eat more of course. If you hate cardio however it's probably easier to just eat less. Polished look can only mean better body composition resp. less muscle mass maintained at goal condition, which I doubt would be the case.

I'm not sure that I caught what you were saying exactly. Do you mean that this supplemental training ie interval or tabata, would cut into my potential to gain or even maintain a certain level of muscle mass while getting into a proper level of conditioning? This is something that concerns me, coz I remember that when I achieved this peak condition I went from 169 at 8% to 157 at 5%, so I lost about 5 pounds of LBM and about 7 pounds of fat during this process.

I think that as long as you follow the essential rules of enough protein intake, intense strength training, and keeping your rate of weight loss low (as you tap into lower bodyfat regions), your body composition on a cut is mainly determined by your genetics and not by whether you do cardio or not. I don't think it makes a difference either way, it's just a matter of convenience whether you want to do cardio and eat more or don't do any cardio at all.

Ok, so now for the bomb... How much protein is needed? John Mark Blakley of JM Press fame and a 700 pound plus bench press to his credit, always used to tell me that as long as I got in 100 grams daily then it was all good.

Bump for gh15. That's me at 5'11" and a buck 57 and at 5%, all natural. So it's possible for me to hit 175 to 180 at 5% naturally? 20 to 25 pounds of lean muscle is something.

you're 180 lbs.  you have plenty room on the upside to gain, and very little muscle to lose....twink.

At 5% I weigh about a buck 57, as in that photo, but gh15 says that it's possible for a natural at 5'11" to be a buck 80 at 5%. So do you really realize what 20 to 25 pounds of ONLY lean muscle would be? That is a HUGE difference, and I'm not talking about 25 added pounds comprised of muscle, fat, and food in the gut, I'm talking bout ONLY 25 pounds of lean muscle tissue.

180 5'11" 5% BF is attainable no doubt you have to have the right genetics, diet and train correctly. You have the frame for it no doubt.

A little meth goes a long way.

btw, i need to comment on this type of conditioning and the type of cardio that you need to achieve it

put it this way, you won't get shredded like that by walking on a incline for 60 minutes at 3mph (like alot of the muscleheads who are worshipped on here)

that is a result some sort of HITT/Circuit/doing athletic things/BJJ

bottom line- ditch the tread mill and run some sprints if you want to get insanely shredded like pellius
