Quote: From press release...

NEW YORK (June 2, 2010) – Can Scott “Hands Of Steel’’ Smith, aka “The Comeback Kid,’’ do it again?

On Saturday, June 26, at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on SHOWTIME®, Smith will attempt to make it two consecutive victories over Cung Le in a middleweight (185 pounds) rematch of one of the most incredible Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) comeback victories of all-time.

The eagerly anticipated return bout between Smith (17-6), of Elk Grove, Calif., and Le (6-1), of San Jose, will take place on an already-stacked STRIKEFORCE and M-1 Global fight card that features the world’s No. 1 heavyweight and pound-for-pound MMA fighter, Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko (31-1),against two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion and top-ranked superstar Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum (13-4) in the main event.

The universally recognized No. 1 female fighter in MMA, Cris Cyborg will defend her STRIKEFORCE 145-pound belt against Jan Finney, marking the first time in history that both the No. 1 male and female fighters will compete on the same card.

In another featured fight, former STRIKEFORCE lightweight (155 pounds) champion Josh Thomson (16-3), of San Jose, will try and regain his winning ways against Pat “Bam Bam’’ Healy (23-15) of Portland, Ore. Thomson lost a five-round decision in his last start to Gilbert Melendez in one of the most wildly exciting, give-and-take slugfests of the year on Dec. 19, 2009, at HP Pavilion. Healy is coming off a well-deserved, unanimous three-round decision over Bryan Travers during a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event on May 21.

Tickets are on sale at the HP Pavilion box office, all Ticketmaster locations (800) 745-3000, Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com) and STRIKEFORCE’s official website (www.strikeforce.com). For more information, please also visit www.M-1GLOBAL.com.

The SHOWTIME telecast will begin at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

The hard-hitting, never-say-die Smith is no stranger to dramatic, stirring, come-from-behind victories. He rallied to knock out Benji Radach on April 1, 2009, at HP Pavilion and registered a highlight-reel second-round KO over the UFC’s Pete Sell on Nov. 11, 2006.

Smith, however, may have outdone himself with his courageous performance against Le, coming back from the brink of absolute defeat to triumph by third-round knockout last Dec. 19 at HP Pavilion.

Smith had taken a frightful beating for two-and-a-half-rounds as southpaw Le, making his first start in 21 months, totally dominated. The one-sided proceedings seemed over at least a couple of times as everything was going Le’s way. His trademark spinning back kicks were connecting with startling frequency and were knocking Smith around the cage.

At one point, while Smith was on the ground after getting dropped, Le seemed to throw more than 50 consecutive punches. He slammed Smith once.

But Smith, a proven finisher who has never turned down a challenge, summoned the energy and heart – again – to twice drop Le. After he connected twice on a downed Le, the referee stepped in and halted the exciting battle at 3:25.

“This was one helluva fight,’’ said Smith afterward. “He had me the first two-and-a-half rounds, but I’ve got a hard head. On the knockdowns, I faked the right and threw the left. Everyone always looks for my right, but the left hook is my best punch.

“It took me until the third round to close the gap on him, but once I did and he began to drop his hands, I could sense things were starting to go my way. That’s when I feinted with the right and landed the left. It never matters who I fight. I just want these types of tough fights.’’

Le, a former STRIKEFORCE middleweight champion who relinquished the belt to concentrate on an acting career, offered no excuses but has been clamoring for a rematch since.

“He got the best of me last time with a good punch,’’ Le said. “We both fought our hearts out that night, but I’ve wanted a chance to turn the tables on him since that fight ended and now my opportunity is here. I am very excited to fight a warrior like Scott again.

“The fans in San Jose and those watching on SHOWTIME are in for a great fight again between Smith and me and a great night of fights.’’

Thomson, who shut out Melendez across five rounds to capture the STRIKEFORCE world 155-pound belt on June 27, 2008, dropped a rematch by the scores of 49-46 twice and 49-47.

Like Le, the popular Thomson was coming off a lengthy layoff. It was his first start before a paying audience in 15 months due to injuries (he broke his left leg twice during training).

But Thomson showed against Melendez that he’s healthy again and he is excited about a possible rubber match. First, however, he must get past Healy.

“I’m up for a third fight with Gilbert if that’s what STRIKEFORCE wants,’’ said Thomson, who had an eight-fight winning streak end last time out. “I know this is a fight the fans want to see again. But my sole focus now is on winning my next fight. I can’t concern myself with future fights.

“For me, the future is June 26 and beating Healy.’’

Healy has defeated quality opponents since turning pro in August 2001. He was impressive outpointing Travers (13-1 going in) by the scores of 30-27 and 29-28 twice. It was a rare points’ victory for the durable, well-conditioned wrestling specialist who has won more than half his fights via submission.

A winner of three in a row and five out of six outings, Healy is getting an opportunity against one of the fighters he most wanted to fight.

“I’ll fight anyone but there are two guys in the 155-pound as far as I’m concerned and that’s Josh and Melendez,’’ Healy said. “A win over Thomson, then Melendez could be next for me’’

Surely this will be an epic, historical HW battle. ::)

I will admit, I am looking forward to watching Smith vs. Le.

Smith is one of the grittiest MF's in MMA. His fights are always exciting.

Possibly one of the only ways you’ll be able to sense Fedor Emelianenko’s hunger for fighting was his recent admission that he didn’t like having to sit out a proposed April bout while his management team, M-1 Global, negotiated a new contract with its co-promotional partners Strikeforce.

Emelianenko’s heavyweight bout against Fabricio Werdum was delayed from an April 17 broadcast on CBS, after M-1 Global insisted that Strikeforce return to the table to re-negotiate an agreement that had been signed the previous August.

“It was unpleasant that the fight kept getting postponed,” said the stolid Emelianenko through his translator Steven Bash during a Friday teleconference call. “I was certainly ready to fight in April and I wanted to fight in April. I had to change my training (schedule) for it.”

M-1 Global said it asked for a revised agreement mainly to create more of a presence for their organization on the jointly-promoted events. The two parties were able to hash out a new co-promotional agreement by May for at least two more events together.

“With respect to that period and why the bout was postponed, it had nothing to do with me,” added Emelianenko. “From our side, it’s really a question that you should probably direct to Strikeforce and not M-1 Global.”

Emelianenko stated that he’s not an active participant in the business side of negotiations pertaining to his bouts.

“(M-1 Global’s) Vadim (Finkelchstein) relates to me all of the details of any negotiations that take place and I don’t participate personally in those negotiations,” said Emelianenko. “The main question that I always decide and is always up to me is how much time I will need to prepare for a fight to recover from whatever injuries I have or aches and pains I have and have the proper training camp to be ready for a particular fight.”

In other notes:

• Emelianenko said Werdum’s 2006 submission victory over his brother Aleksander would have no bearing on the bout. “It absolutely makes no difference…I have no vengeance because of that,” said Emelianenko. “I plan on fighting for myself and my country.”

• Werdum on the Fedor Mystique: “Most fighters, exclusive of myself, have already lost the fight with Fedor before stepping into the cage because Fedor has proven to be the greatest in the world,” said Werdum through his translator and manager Richard Wilner. “While I’m not a statistician, perhaps some of that lack of mental preparation goes with them into their future fights.”

Emelianenko didn’t concur with Werdum’s theory. “As far as what happens to the fighters that have fought with me in the past, I don’t think there’s any mystery or any magic to it. Every person’s different and it depends on them and how they handle defeat and how they continue to fight in their career,” he said.

• The 33-year-old Emelianenko declined to comment on a future bout with Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem. Emelianenko said he has two fights remaining as part of M-1 Global’s deal with Strikeforce (including the Werdum bout) and if everything went well, he didn’t see why he wouldn’t extend for more bouts under that co-promotional set-up.

• When asked, Emelianenko did generally comment on Overeem, Shane Carwin, and UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar -- three of the heftier standouts in that division’s ranks. “Size and strength doesn’t always define the ability for a fighter to perform in the ring and the cage…Size doesn’t necessarily define how they’d perform against me,” he said.

• Emelianenko said he’d like to finish up his current contract without any losses and would re-evaluate his career from there. Emelianenko clarified that he had no aspirations to run for political office at this time, but if it were to happen, it would be something that came after he retired from fighting.

• Emelianenko on retirement: “After every fight I balance and weigh whether I should continue or whether I should stop. Until I feel I come to a point where I feel I’m not as effective or I’m not getting what I want out of the sport, I’ll continue fighting.”

• Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said June 26 ticket sales had reached over the 10,000 mark and he hoped to top out around 15,000 tickets sold. Coker praised the combination of Emelianenko’s return and a strong presence from local standouts like Cung Le and Josh Thomson for the healthy sales.

• Emelianenko said he prefers to spend time with his family and friends rather than “cruise the Internet” to read about what others say about him, positive or negative.

• Emelianenko said he’s fully recovered from the dislocated thumb he sustained in his second-round TKO victory over Brett Rogers last November.

• Emelianenko said he feels comfortable fighting in a cage and has been training in one back in Russia.

• A Strikeforce event on Aug. 21 has nearly been finalized to take place at the Toyota Center in Houston, said Coker. Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal, who hails form the Lone Star state, will make his first title defense – possibly against Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante.

• When asked, Emelianenko said he believed Sambo was the most beneficial base discipline an aspiring fighter could take up, particularly to combat Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Emelianenko recommended adding boxing and muay Thai as well.

Strikeforce Fedor Emelianenko Vs Fabricio Werdum Preview: Fedor Remains Emperor
by John Shubert Correspondent Written on June 20, 2010  "The Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko returns this Saturday to defend his status as the best heavyweight fighter in the world. Fedor takes on Fabricio Werdum in a non title fight, though should he win it will likely cement a title bout against Alistair Overeem later this year.

Also on the card is arguably the greatest female fighter on the planet Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos defending her Featherweight title. Rounding out the card is a rematch between Cung Le and Scott Smith as well as former lightweight champ Josh Thomson. Let's break down the card:

Main Event:

Fedor Emelianenko vs Fabricio Werdum

Fedor is 32-1 with 25 wins by stoppage. He has a strong background in Sambo, Judo, and Boxing. He has fought some of the best fighters in the world and is widely regarded as the best heavyweight fighter on the planet.

Werdum is 13-4-1 with 11 wins by stoppage. He has a strong background in BJJ, Judo, and Muay Thai. He has also faced top competition with slightly more mixed results but actually owns a win over Fedor's brother Aleksander and current Strikeforce heavyweight champ Overeem.

These fighters are actually more similar than people realize. Both have finishing power in their hands but both are actually more accomplished grapplers. However, if anyone has watched either of these two men fight even a newcomer can tell who is better.

This fight could be sloppy on the feet but that's just the way Fedor will want it. He'd rather take his chances there than go to the ground where it could turn into a stalemate. Werdum could land some magic on Fedor but no one's done it yet so I'm not going to start picking against him now.

I've got Fedor by KO in the first round.

Cyborg Santos vs Jan Finney

Santos is 9-1 with seven wins by KO. She is a vicious Muay Thai striker with a developing BJJ game. She has faced some tough fighters on her road to the championship with overwhelmingly positive results.

Finney is 8-7 with four wins by KO. She is a striker. As her record indicates she has faced a lot of tough fighters and often times comes out on the losing end (in one case three times to the same fighter).

This has brutal finish written all over it. Finney is a tough fighter but she is moving up a weight class and Santos is the strongest female fighter I have ever seen. Not to mention Finney won't want to take Cyborg down leaving the fight exactly where Cyborg wants it.

I'm picking Cyborg to win by TKO in the second round to retain her title. Is Strikeforce running out of competition for Cyborg? It certainly looks like it.

Cung Le vs Scott Smith

Le is 6-1 with all six wins by KO. He is a striker with a developing grappling game. He has faced a couple tough fighters with mostly positive results and was the former Strikeforce middleweight champ.

Smith is 17-6 with all 17 wins by stoppage. He is a striker with some wrestling ability. He has faced some tough fighters with mixed results.

This is a rematch of what some consider the fight of the year and what was certainly the comeback of the year in 2009. Both of these guys are good strikers. Le is better technically but Smith has more power and has a better chin.

This fight will most likely come down to whose conditioning is better and who has more heart just like the last fight. To be honest Le is seven years older and Smith definitely has the better chin. So with that in mind I'm picking Smith to win by KO in the third round.

Josh Thomson vs Pat Healy

Thomson is 16-3 with 12 wins by stoppage. He is a grappler with some kick boxing ability. He has faced some tough fighters with mostly positive results.

Healy is 23-15 with 19 wins by stoppage. He is also a grappler with some striking ability. He has faced quite a few tough fighters but unfortunately with mostly negative results.

As Healy's record indicates this is a "get right" fight for the former champ Thomson. Thomson has much better quality wherever the fight takes place. Not to mention Healy is normally a welterweight and will probably be extra drained for this fight trying to make 155 lbs.

I'm picking Thompson to get back on track with a submission victory in the first round

Showtime is good for lots of things, and until recently terrible Adam Sandler movies topped that list. Thankfully, the network has jumped on the MMA bandwagon and will broadcast this Saturday’s Strikeforce/M-1 Global “Fedor vs. Werdum” fight-fest from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

Anytime Fedor Emelianenko enters the cage, it’s must-see TV. When it comes against a top-10 opponent like Fabricio Werdum, the pot only gets sweeter. Throw in women’s MMA juggernaut Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos defending her featherweight crown and comeback connoisseur Scott Smith in a rematch of his impossible win over Cung Le, and you’re a real Silly Sailor if you won’t pony up for a Showtime package.

In preparation for a night of serious fisticuffs, you know what you need to do.

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Fabricio Werdum

Werdum has been a top 10-caliber heavyweight for nearly five years, and yet he enters this fight with Emelienenko considered a hopeless underdog by everyone from casual fans to hardened bookies. It is perhaps the greatest testament to Emelianenko’s seven-year reign as the sport’s best heavyweight that even quality opponents register as little more than fodder for the dead-eyed Russian’s peerless craft.

Expectation and reality rarely coalesce in the theatre of the improbable that is MMA, but Werdum will be faced with a nightmarish style clash come Saturday night. The one and only way he can realistically win this fight is by getting Emelianenko horizontal and working his world-class Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Therein lies the rub. Werdum relies on the clinch to score takedowns, and that is the last place he wants to be with “The Last Emperor.”

While far too much is made of Emelianenko’s combat sambo career, he shows incredible balance and technique in the clinch when he wants to. Of course there are many notable instances where Emelianenko has shown disinterested takedown defense, but this only happens against opponents who don’t have the submission defense to do anything with top control on him. Given the obvious threat Werdum poses on the mat, there is every reason to believe freebie takedowns will be in short supply.

The other issue facing Werdum in pursuing a takedown is that by doing so he puts himself right in Emelianenko’s wheelhouse. Recent history shows that Emelianenko can lay out anything on two feet, and Werdum’s chin won’t hold up if he gets caught trying to wade in on him. Making matters worse for Werdum is the fact that he doesn’t have the jab to keep his Russian quarry at bay -- a worrying problem for him since few fighters have Emelianenko’s knack for stepping inside and landing accurately with heavy leather.

In his bout with Antonio Silva, Werdum’s habit of dropping his hands in exchanges and telegraphing leg kicks remained uncorrected, and that won’t make it past Emelianenko’s watchful eyes. That is really what separates these two and generally separates Emelianenko from other fighters: the ability to quickly perceive weaknesses and capitalize on them. Such a massive difference in fight IQ leaves Werdum hoping to make a paint-by-numbers approach work against an opponent who will see it coming from the opening bell.

Given Emelianenko’s recent flair for the violently dramatic, it’s a safe bet to assume Werdum will look every bit the worthy adversary Strikeforce is billing himself as. That optical illusion can only last so long, and once Emelianenko finds his rhythm, he will shatter any hope Werdum had of winning. The dream-smasher comes in the form of yet another stiff-starch overhand right knockout.

I love how they are handing Cung Le a second chance to redeem himself...if he gets TKO'd again, it's a wrap for him. I'm pulling for smith.

All I keep hearing about is how "game" this finney girl is. She can take a beating, but I guess we'll see. I'm hoping for a toe to toe vs cyborg.

I couldn't imagine having an argument with cyborg over leaving the toilet seat up. She'd probably just punch you square in the fk'n chest and leave you on the floor to ponder if you want to be a man and try to fight her him back.

Honestly, womens MMA is unwatchable.

Cyborg is obviously a GH enhanced shemale who is fighting women that still get their menstral cycle. She looks like Wanderlei Silva with a wig. She even talks like him. Fuckin scary and disgusting.

That brain dead female referee should be changing diapers and not overseeing MMA bouts. That stupid bitch almost got Finny killed. Its a miracle Finny didn't have a stroke after being clobbered that many times.
