Reuters Admits Cropping Photos of Ship Clash, Denies Political Motive

The British-based Reuters news agency has been stung for the second time by charges that it edited politically sensitive photos in a way that casts Israel in a bad light. But this time Reuters claims it wasn’t at fault.

The news agency reacted to questions raised by an American blogger who showed that Reuters' photo service edited out knives and blood traces from pictures taken aboard the activist ship Mavi Marmara during a clash with Israeli commandos last week. Nine people were killed and scores were injured in the clash.

The pictures of the fight were released by IHH, the Turkish-based group that sponsored the six-ship fleet that tried to break Israel's blockade of Gaza.

In one photo, an Israeli commando is shown lying on the deck of the ship, surrounded by activists. The uncut photo released by IHH shows the hand of an unidentified activist holding a knife. But in the Reuters photo, the hand is visible but the knife has been edited out.

The blog “Little Green Footballs” challenged Reuters' editing of the photo.

“That’s a very interesting way to crop the photo. Most people would consider that knife an important part of the context. There was a huge controversy over whether the activists were armed. Cropping out a knife, in a picture showing a soldier who’s apparently been stabbed, seems like a very odd editorial decision. Unless someone was trying to hide it,” the blog stated.

In a second photo the unedited print issued by IHH showed blood along the ship's railing and a hand holding a knife as an Israeli soldier lies on the deck. Both the blood and the knife were missing in the photo that Reuters released.

Reuters on Tuesday denied it intended to alter the political meanings of the photographs.

“The images in question were made available in Istanbul, and following normal editorial practice were prepared for dissemination which included cropping at the edges," the news agency said in a statement. "When we realized that a dagger was inadvertently cropped from the images, Reuters immediately moved the original set as well."

Reuters has yet to respond to charges about the second photo.

This is the second time Reuters has been accused of manipulating photos. In 2006 a Reuters photographer, Adnan Hajj, doctored several photos of the destruction caused by Israel's bombing of Beirut. In one he added smoke to a panoramic picture of South Beirut to make the damage look more severe than it was. In a second photo, he showed a woman whose home had supposedly been destroyed in the same raid, but an investigation revealed that the woman's house had been destroyed prior to the Israeli strike.

Reuters later removed all of Hajj's more than 900 photos from distribution and severed its relationship with him. A photo editor also was fired.

What happened on the Mavi Marmara and who was responsible for the killing and bloodshed on the ship is still a matter of debate. Activists charge that Israeli commandos fired first and provoked the skirmish. Israeli commandos say they were compelled to use deadly force after they were attacked by people on board the ship.

What a shock
Reuters already has a bad rep for allowing their reporters to manipulate news and not report on it.
This is all over the world and not just the middle east

The MSM is in bed with the Muslims and fully helping to push Sharia Law on us. This revelation isn't surprising given that the media won't even mention the words "Islam" or "Muslim" in stories that cast Islam in a bad light anymore. Just look at the NJ terrorists. The media keeps saying they were traveling to Somalia to join a "youth movement group" and other lies like that. The MSM being in bed with the islamonazis is dangerous for us in the West.

Whatever happened to objective reporting? This is pretty deplorable stuff.

More propaganda from news networks. How surprising.. I have to question their motives too, especially on these issues, very rarely are honest mistakes made.
Interestingly enough Reuters cropped the knife whereas the Hurriyet pictures showed the knife.

It's still an oxymoron though when one network accuses others of manipulation or political motive. Again people have to combine many stories to get just a shade of the truth.

More cropped photos by Reuters.

Another Cropped Reuters Photo Deletes Another Knife - And a Pool of Blood
MEDIA | Sun, Jun 6, 2010 at 3:25:19 pm PDT

OK, come on now. I mean, really.

One picture cropped to remove a knife might be explained as incompetence or a simple mistake.

But now we have two pictures from the “peace activists” that were cropped by someone at Reuters to remove knives in the hands of the activists, as they attempted to take soldiers hostage.

Reuters has published this picture from the activists:

The picture is a cropped version of this photo from the IHH website (IHH is the Islamist group whose members rioted aboard the Mavi Marmara):

What did the Reuters photo editor crop out? A big knife and a big pool of blood.

UPDATE at 6/6/10 4:20:27 pm:

And it gets worse. I took the photo into Photoshop and increased the exposure to lighten the dark areas, and discovered that they didn’t just crop out the knife and blood — they also cropped out another badly injured Israeli soldier lying on the floor.

Hahaha, so much for "objective" reporting from the islamofascist MSM.

Gaza activists 'sought clash'
Israeli version supported by CC footage, Frattini says

(ANSA) - Rome, June 9 - Activists involved in last week's deadly raid by Israeli commandos on a Gaza aid flotilla appear from closed-circuit camera footage to have "deliberately sought the clash," Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Wednesday.

Frattini said audio-visual material showed activists getting ready to repel an assault.

"Some of the activists on board were putting on bullet-proof vests and gas masks and tooling up with various weapons including iron tubes cut from the ship using buzz saws purposely brought on board," the foreign minister told the Senate.

"They then split up into teams to isolate and hit as many Israeli soldiers as possible as soon as the assault was launched".

Israel has consistently maintained that its soldiers acted in self-defence in firing on activists armed with knives and bars, killing eight Turks and a Turkish-American aboard the flagship. Activists have said the commandoes attacked without provocation.

Frattini underscored that the full activists' version of events "must be established".

"For now we only know the (version) the Israelis have put out".

"The events that happened on board the ship in those convulsed, tragic moments must be carefully established". ISRAEL 'MUST CONDUCT PROBE, WITH QUARTET AS OBSERVER'.

A probe into the episode must be left to Israel but the Middle East Quartet should be allowed to take part too, Frattini added.

Italy was confident, he said, that Israel would be able to meet the UN Security Council's criteria for the inquiry.

Frattini said he was sure the inquiry would be "impartial, serious transparent and independent".

Like the US, Italy believed it was not right to take the probe out of the hands of Israel, a "democratic and sovereign state", also to avoid the polemics that ensued after the independent Gladstone Report into the three-week 2008-2009 Gaza War which accused both Israel and, to a lesser extent, Palestinian militants, of war crimes.

Frattini said Italy had voted against an international, non-Israeli, probe in the interests of peace.

He said Italy's No vote on the United Nations Human Rights Council a week ago "was not against or in favour of anyone".

"It was a vote that derived from an objective assessment in favour of peace," the foreign minister told the Senate.

Frattini stressed there should be "an international component" in Israel's probe into the incident.

Italy, Britain and France are pushing for the Middle East Quartet - United Nations, United States, European Union and Russia - to have some form of representation in the inquiry.

At the UN rights council, Italy voted with the United States and Netherlands against a resolution proposed by the Palestinians, Sudan and Pakistan, unlike most European countries which abstained.

The non-binding resolution was carried by 32 votes to 47.

The snake Muslims and their legion of islamofascists cohorts in the MSM and far-left are looking more and more like disinformation specialists helping to push Sharia Law on us.

Doctoring photos, bulletproof vests, gas masks, weapons, terrorist links by the group running the ship. "Peace activists" indeed. Time for the perpetrators of multiple genocides, Turkey, to claim victim status again.
