President Obama begins 10-day vacation in Martha's Vineyard
BY Kenneth R. Bazinet
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

Thursday, August 19th 2010, 4:00 AM

WASHINGTON - President Obama on Thursday starts a 10-day vacation in Martha's Vineyard, where he can enjoy watching the sun sink below the horizon - instead of his poll numbers.

The summer playground off the Massachusetts coast is brimming with Secret Service agents and extra state police. A Coast Guard cutter will patrol the waters off the property.

"I do think that just like a lot of American people, the President is taking a little time with his family to recharge his batteries," spokesman Bill Burton said.

Not that the burdens of the presidency may not interrupt him. Obama has a knack for scheduling his break when big events intrude.

Last summer, Sen. Ted Kennedy passed away while the Obamas were on the Vineyard, and Obama went to Boston to speak at his funeral.

During their Christmas holidays in Hawaii, the underwear bomber tried to blow up a plane bound for Detroit, leaving people asking at the time who was in charge when the terrorist nearly struck.

The White House is taking steps to make sure Obama keeps plugged in, even while he's on one of the island's members-only golf courses.

"Whenever you talk about a presidential vacation, you ought to put the word 'vacation' in quotes because you can bet that there will still be work that he's doing every day," Burton said.

"He'll continue to get his daily intelligence brief from [deputy national security adviser] John Brennan, who will be there. He'll be getting constant updates on what's happening in the economy and other issues," Burton explained.

The First Family is expected to stay "up-island" again at Blue Heron Farm in Chilmark, the remote multimillion-dollar property where they resided during last summer's Vineyard vacation, according to a law enforcement source.

There are no official plans, but swims in the ocean, some sailing and cookouts are on the Obama's agenda, a source said.

Like last year, the First Family also is expected to do some bike riding, maybe get in some miniature golf and take a few trips to the island's boutique ice cream stands.

Vineyard buzzes less for Obamas’ second visit
Many say they’ll leave family alone
By Milton J. Valencia, Globe Staff  |  August 18, 2010

OAK BLUFFS — Sharky’s Cantina is once again mixing its “Obamarita’’ cocktail, with tastes of the president’s favorite fruits, and the Locker Room on Circuit Avenue has restocked the “I vacationed with Obama’’ T-shirts.

But as Martha’s Vineyard prepares for the first family’s visit tomorrow — their second summer stay here since President Obama took office — the excitement that marked last summer’s arrival of the fresh-faced commander in chief seems to have ebbed like the tide.

Obama, now a tested president burdened by war and economic upheaval, may well get the peace and quiet he has been seeking as he settles in for a 10-day stay, presumably at the historic Blue Heron Farm in Chilmark where he stayed last year, local residents said.

“I have no desire to go chase him or see him,’’ said Elaine Allen, owner of the Laughing Bear clothing shop on Circuit Avenue, one of the few stores to feature a poster in its window welcoming the first family this year.

“Let him just have that R and R that he needs,’’ she said.

It was only a year ago that the president, a superstar after his historic election, rode a wave of popularity to The Rock. Islanders typically brag about a laissez-faire attitude when it comes to celebrities, but it seemed everyone wanted a glimpse of Obama playing golf or biking with his daughters.

But in the final days before his second visit, some residents say the excitement has waned along with Obama’s popularity after two years in office. Others say his poll numbers are not the issue; they just want to give the president the quiet he seeks.

“It’s not as hectic or as crazy’’ this year, said Maya Sharp, a clerk at Alley’s General Store in West Tisbury, one of the locations the president visited last summer. She remembers the excitement when Secret Service agents came into the store announcing that the president would visit. No one else was allowed in the store when he came in to buy candy for his two daughters.

“It’s just a laid-back feeling now,’’ Sharp said. “It’s like ‘Wow, he’s coming — again.’ ’’

One barometer of the plunge in excitement has been the sale of Obama-themed T-shirts, which designers had been banking on after the craze of last year. Clothing labeled with the president’s name sold by the thousands, helping to salvage a tough economic year for the island.

But this year’s T-shirt sales are much less brisk, merchants say.

“Last year, Obama gave you goose bumps, but I don’t think you’re going to see that this year,’’ said Alex McCluskey, co-owner of the Locker Room, who sold more than 4,000 “I vacationed with Obama’’ T-shirts last year. But so far this year, he said, his hot item is T-shirts of former President Bush asking, “Miss me yet?’’

Residents have also noticed a drop in the number of stores with Obama posters on their front windows and homes with signs that welcome the first family.

“We’re so used to presidents coming here,’’ said Sue Tonry of Wicked Martha’s clothing and gift shop in Vineyard Haven. “He’ll be able to get some peace and quiet.’’

Of course, even with the change in vibe this year, no one could deny they would appreciate a presidential visit. A fund-raiser is being held for Governor Deval Patrick Saturday at the Edgartown home of Boston businessman Richard Friedman, and the question on the island is whether the president will show up. And like Sharp, the general store clerk, the few people who received a surprise visit last year would love a return.

Unlike President Clinton, who would make public appearances several times a day during his numerous vacations on the Vineyard, Obama made only four unannounced appearances during his stay last summer, at a restaurant, a snack bar, a deli, and at the Alley’s General Store.

“If he came here right now, this place would be mobbed,’’ said Dennis daRosa of daRosa Corp., a printing business, president of the Oak Bluffs Association. He acknowledged the Obama buzz this year has been low key, but said the tone could change once the president arrives on the island.

“The excitement has been building,’’ said Nancy Gardella, executive director of the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce.

Obama’s vacation, like last year, falls during the island’s unofficial grand finale of the season, and the first family has an open invitation to the week’s events. An annual agricultural festival kicks off tomorrow in West Tisbury. The annual Grand Illumination of the Gingerbread Cottages in Oak Bluffs occurs tonight, and Friday brings a fireworks spectacular that residents say rivals Boston’s Fourth of July festivities. First dog Bo has also been invited to a communitywide dog walk Sunday.

“Traditionally, this is the biggest week of the year on Martha’s Vineyard,’’ Gardella said, adding that the president is probably familiar with the festivities because of his past trips here. “People realize the family just needs a little downtime, and hopefully they take this time to enjoy whatever they want their vacation to be.’’

Ralph Sr. and Brenda Wright of Baltimore have been making the trip here around the same time for the past eight years and were caught up in the Obama craze last year. They bought Obama T-shirts and admit they have tapped the rumor mill to learn who is visiting where this week. They do not plan to buy new T-shirts, though.

“I have the original one; that’s all I wanted,’’ Ralph Wright said.

Milton Valencia can be reached at mvalencia@globe.com.

President Obama's fundraising spree across the country to help his party retain power isn't just reaping millions of dollars for Democratic candidates -- it's also said to be costing taxpayers millions of dollars.

And it's leaving a massive carbon footprint, too.

One analyst estimated Obama's five-state, three-day tour cost taxpayers about $2 million.

On top of that, the carbon footprint, or pollution generated by the travel, probably matched "something of a size-32 shoe," said Pete Sepp of the National Taxpayers Union, a group that promotes smaller government and fewer taxes.

The special flavor of the week is in honor of President Obama's arrival on the island.

August 19, 2010EDGARTOWN -

President Obama, wife Michelle and the girls, Sasha and Malia, are scheduled to land land on Martha's Vineyard this afternoon to kick off 10 days of fun in the sun, returning to the posh Chilmark farm where they vacationed last year.

Air Force One is set to touch down at the Coast Guard Air Station on Cape Cod. The first family will then board a helicopter and fly over to the island. From Martha's Vineyard Airport they'll motorcade to Blue Heron Farm, the 30-acre hideaway on Tisbury Great Pond with a 10,000-square-foot, fully renovated farmhouse the Obamas will call home until Aug. 29.

More Times Breaking News

They are expected to touch down in a back corner of the airport, blocked from view by a wall of school buses. But residents and tourists will mostly likely line the motorcade route in hopes of catching a glimpse of the Obama.

Islanders suggest hidden gems the Obamas should visit:

President Bill Clinton, who vacationed here six out of his eight years in office, would have a big tarmac lovefest when he'd arrive on The Rock, with invited guests lined up to greet him and the fam. Word is, the Secret Service 86'd a similar welcome for Obama post-9/11.

Last minute preparations were underway yesterday for the big arrival. We hear Blue Heron Farm was ready to go under lockdown, and a giant cargo plane carrying staff, equipment and vehicles for the president's visit was unloaded at the airport. A Marine helicopter carrying three bicycles was also spotted.

(A temporary flight restriction is in effect in the Martha's Vineyard airspace from today until August 29, according to a Federal Aviation Administration press release.

Flights within a 10-mile radius are restricted to law enforcement aircraft; military aircraft supporting the secret service; medical and emergency flights; and regularly scheduled commercial passenger and cargo flights, according to the FAA's Web site. Within 30 miles, pilots must follow a flight plan and keep in contact with air traffic control.

The 10-mile ring covers most of Martha's Vineyard and parts of Falmouth while Hyannis and Nantucket fall within the 30-mile ring.)

Letterman Knocks Obama For Latest Vacation

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) — A storm that curtailed outdoor activities for much of President Barack Obama’s vacation was forecast to end Wednesday, but he said he’s been able to fight off cabin fever.

Not only has he been able to sneak in two rounds of golf, but he told reporters Tuesday he’s “doing a lot of reading” at the farm compound he’s rented for the first family. “I’m having a great time,” he said.

The president made the remarks, his first in public since heading out on vacation last week, as he escorted first lady Michelle Obama from the State Road restaurant.

Obama has faced some criticism for his latest vacation, his sixth since taking office. At a time when painful unemployment numbers continue to bear down on the tattered economy, many are frustrated that the nation’s leader is enjoying another luxurious trip. On CBS’ “The Late Show” Tuesday night, David Letterman took a jab at the president, saying: “He’ll have plenty of time for vacations after his one term is up.”

The couple dined out for the second consecutive night, this time with Washington power broker Vernon Jordan and his wife, Ann, as well as Chicago friends Eric and Cheryl Whitaker. White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett also joined the group.

Fellow diners cheered the president and clapped as he left the restaurant. Obama paused for pictures and signed autographs. While Mrs. Obama wore a colorful print dress with contrasting sleeves, the president looked more subdued in khakis, a striped dress shirt and blue outdoor jacket.

Strong thunderstorms have lashed the island off Massachusetts since Sunday, causing power outages, curtailing air transportation and forcing ferry cancellations. They also triggered traffic jams and long lines at movie theaters, restaurants and other indoor venues.

The Obamas are scheduled to remain on vacation until Sunday, when the president heads to New Orleans to check on the gulf oil spill cleanup and to mark the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Breaking News: President Obama Says "I'm Having a Great Time" On Vacation
August 25, 2010 12:42 PM

www.abcnews.com

________________________ __________________

Last night President Obama and First Lady Obama dined at State Road Restaurant in West Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard.

Their dinner companions were family friends Dr. Eric and Cheryl Whitaker, senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, and lawyer and business executive Vernon Jordan and wife Ann Dibble Jordan.

As they departed the restaurant at 9:55 pm ET, reporters asked the president if he was enjoying his vacation even with the rain.

"I'm having a great time,” the president said. “Doing a lot of reading"

Among the president’s reading materials is Jonathan Franzen’s “Freedom,” which is not yet on shelves. During a weekend visit to a local bookstore in Vineyard Haven the owner gifted the president with the store’s advanced reading copy.

Minutes after leaving the restaurant, Vernon Jordan appeared on a rerun of CBS’ The Good Wife, trying to purchase the fictitious Chicago law firm Stern, Lockhart & Gardner.(The episode originally aired in May.)

Jordan is a friend of the owner of State Road Restaurant – so much so that you can hear his voice on the restaurant’s phone message..

“He’s a friend of mine and I adore his voice,” owner Mary Kenworth told ABC News. The restaurant opened June 2009, but Kenworth and her husband were the original owners of The Sweet Life Café – where the president dined on Monday night and where Kenworth first met the Jordans.

Kenworth said she’d been asked not to talk about what the Obamas ordered, but “the whole table got lobster tempura with island corn succotash and lemon vinaigrette” in addition to their individual entrees.

“It was very exciting for all of us, they were extremely lovely to everyone here,” she said.

Also of note: Ann Jordan and Valerie Jarrett are cousins. Ann Jordan's mother and Jarrett’s mother's father were siblings.

Sorry, Bush is regarded as one of the worst presidents ever.  If you want to use the worst ever as your bench mark for Obama, fine, but he was elected as the anti-bush, not as the "But Bush did it too" potus.

Face it, this catastrophe you voted for is as bad or worse than Bush and is a one term istake at best.  Personally, I think he will resign in November 2010 after the mid-terms.

Again dipshit - obama was elected to be the anti-Bush.  The economy is cratering daily and this idiot is on vacation and the best you can come up with is "But Bush . . . . . " ? ? ?

Sorry, that shit doesnt fly anymore.  This lazy do-nothing, grifter, thief, and incompetent fool was elected because we faced a disaster and he is still acting like everything is fine, which it is not.

everywhere you look, we face disaster and where is Obama?  licking Ice Cream cones and hitting mulligans on the golf course.

What "case"?  Assuming what you say is true (and I don't) who cares?  Bush isn't president.  The economic situation wasn't nearly as bad during Bush's first 18 months in office.

You don't go running around the beach, the golf course, etc. in front of TV cameras when so much of the country is struggling.

I love how the far left spent 8 years, and still 2 years after Bush is gone, still Bashing him as the worst POTUS ever, yet uses him as the Benchmark for Obama.

If the electorate wanted Bush the 3rd, they would have voted McCain.  Instead, they voted for Obama and got Bush the 3rd anyway.

Vacationing President to Press: "We're Buying Shrimp, Guys. Come On."
August 25, 2010 3:05 PM
www.abcnews.com

________________________ ________________________ _

President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and their two daughters Sasha and Malia traveled to Nancy's Restaurant on the waterfront of the Oak Bluffs section of Martha’s Vineyard Wednesday afternoon.

Crowds gathered to watch as the president, wearing his White Sox baseball cap, noted the abundance of Red Sox caps. He and the First Lady shook hands and posed for pictures with folks in the crowd. The president ordered from the take-out window of the snack bar section of the eatery.

"I love your watch," one woman told the First Lady, referencing a purple watch on her left wrist.

"Oh, thank you,” the First Lady said. “It was a gift.”

She gestured towards her husband, who was shaking hands behind her.

"I think somebody told him,” she said.

"Where's my wife?" the president asked at one point.

Crowds shouted for her attention.

"How you guys doing?" she asked. "Drying off? Finally."

As the president walked around the restaurant, some cordoned-off reporters shouted out to him questions, including one about the war in Iraq. Next Tuesday night, the president will deliver an Oval Office address at 8 pm ET, in which he will mark the occasion of the withdrawal of US combat troops from the country.

But the president was in no mood today to discuss the issue with reporters in that setting. He ignored questions for a bit, then turned to the reporters.

"We're buying shrimp, guys,” he said, smiling. “Come on."

The president’s lunch companions included Dr. Eric and Cheryl Whittaker, senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, George and Clarice Walker, George Walker IV, Cy Walker, Ann Walker Marchant, David Watkins and Elizabeth Alexander.

So how much lobster are you having during these precarious economic times? What? You’ve had to cut back? No longer ordering it stuffed with crab meat, at least?

Well, if you happen to be the President of the United States or the First Lady, your lobster consumption is continuing at a robust pace.

Yes, the economy is still getting battered. And last night,  so was President Obama’s lobster.

According to ABC’s Jake Tapper, the president  savored some lobster tempura at the trendy State Road Restaurant in West Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard. Oh, just the thought of it. If he brings some back to the White House for me, I’ll write whatever he wants.

Monday night at The Sweet Life Cafe in Oak Bluffs on the Vineyard it was the lobster pasta appetizer for the president and a surf and turf entrée – the “surf” being a lobster tail – for Mrs. Obama.

And what would the vacation to Maine in July have been without a taste of everyone’s favorite crustacean. The president did it in a little less genteel fashion that time, heading over to something called Stewman’s Downtown restaurant where he was served the “Lobster Experience” dinner – just regular lobster, corn and slaw.

But the Obamas’ lobster experience is not confined to these shores. Michelle Obama was barely off the plane during her voyage early this month to the Spanish Riviera when, according to the Spanish press, she dived into a feast of sea bass tartare, strawberry gazpacho and sardines, and a main course of lobster with seaweed risotto.

Michelle enjoyed the repast so much that she was right back at it on  August 14 during the Obamas’ two-day Panama City, Fla photo-op vacation. There, at the Firefly restaurant, it was more lobster for Michelle.

The Obamas were supposed to be showing support for the good people of the oil spill-stricken Gulf, eating their seafood and so forth. So the big question is, was it a Caribbean lobster or one shipped down from Maine?

And who knows what lobster delicacies the White House chef is whipping up for them in between vacations?

No wonder the Russians just started fueling the Iranian nuclear reactor at Bushehr. When President Medvedev was here, Obama took him for burgers.
