Obama vacation back on course
By Mark Shanahan & Meredith Goldstein, Globe Staff  |  August 26, 2010

________________________ ________________________ _____________________

OAK BLUFFS — For a while yesterday, Martha’s Vineyard looked like Shutter Island, the bleak and abandoned outcropping in Martin Scorsese’s movie. Then the sun peeked through and the presidential vacation was suddenly back on.

Prevented from golfing for two days by a steady rain that caused minor flooding on the island, President Obama seized on the better weather yesterday, pressing some flesh in Oak Bluffs and finally hitting the links again.

Obama, whose 10-day stay wraps up Sunday, joined wife Michelle, daughters Malia and Sasha, and a group of friends for an hourlong lunch at Nancy’s Restaurant overlooking Oak Bluffs Harbor. Outside, behind police tape that lined both sides of the street, an impatient crowd gathered to catch a glimpse of the first family.

“He can’t wave? Why can’t he wave?’’ said New Yorker Crystal Bond. “What’s up with no waving?’’

Obama, who could be seen through a second-floor window drinking a bottle of Corona Light (with a slice of lime), was accompanied by friends Valerie Jarrett, Eric and Cheryl Whitaker — near-constant companions on this trip — George and Clarice Dibble Walker, George Walker IV, Cy Walker, Ann Marchant, David Watkins, and Elizabeth Alexander.

“We had a wonderful time,’’ George Walker told us as he walked out with his wife. “They’re very good friends.’’ (That must be true, because we saw the president give Clarice Walker a little kiss on the cheek before leaving.)

Afterward, the president tossed his jacket aside and shook a few hands — “Good to see you guys,’’ he told squealing supporters. “You doing all right?’’ — but he waved off a reporter’s request for a more substantive exchange. Asked about Iraq, the president replied, “We’re buying shrimp, guys, c’mon.’’

A town employee who declined to give us her name said she was thrilled to shake the president’s hand, even if she doesn’t always agree with him. “I’m the happiest Republican in the world,’’ the woman said. “If the leader of the free world wants to shake your hand, you shake it.’’

From there, it was off to Mink Meadows Golf Club, a public course in Vineyard Haven. The president played in a foursome with Whitaker, former John Kerry aide Marvin Nicholson, and investment banker Robert Wolf. At one point, Obama played a ball close to the pin, drawing oohs and ahhs from a small crowd assembled on the clubhouse porch. Responding to the polite applause, Obama jokingly tipped his White Sox cap.

Earlier, as the president departed Oak Bluffs in a black SUV, Susan Tufo, a summer resident in West Tisbury, was watching, her Shetland Sheepdog, Lacie Mae, in her arms.

“I’m pleased he picked Martha’s Vineyard to come to. It reinforces that this is a great place,’’ Tufo said. “It’s a pat on the back that we picked the right place to build a house.’’

Barrack Obama, Wife living like a King and Queen!
.showbizspy ^ | Sunday August 29, 2010

PRESIDENT Barack Obama and his glamorous wife Michelle are living a life of luxury at the taxpayers’ expense, according to a bombshell new report.

American tabloid the National Enquirer says Barack has spent a fortune on parties, vacations and expensive designer clothes.

“It’s outrageous Obama and his family are spending money like water when the rest of America is frantically tightening their belts in a desperate bid not to drown in their financial woes,” said one political insider.

“How can he pull this kind of stunt during what amounts to a modern day depression?

“Obama and his wife are acting like greedy, self-serving politicians, living like a king and queen on our dime. They should be sharing our misery, not spending money like it’s going out of style.

“The Obamas seem to be totally out of touch with the American people. It’s a scandal!”

Recent reports claimed Michelle blew $500k on a European “vacation” to get Barack back for inviting Oprah Winfrey to his Chicago birthday bash.

“With the American economy in shambles, Michelle took off on a lavish holiday all because she was angry that Barack had invited Oprah to his private 49th birthday party,” a source said at the time.

He needs to resign.  Its obvious he does not want the job and appreciate the blessings that he has enjoyed by the taxpayers and citizens.

Actually to be fair, he was in office for a few days last month, he had to attend the re-decorating of the Oval Office, but then once that was completed, he took a vacation to recover from the stress involved from redecorating.

I read a comment at one site that we should offer Obama a payout of $15 million to go away.   Sounds like a great idea.

Michelle Obama hosts first White House dance event (they never learn, do they?)
AP ^ | 9/7/2010 | JOCELYN NOVECK

________________________ ________________________ ___________

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The stately White House East Room, home to many a bill signing and ceremonial gathering, becomes a stage Tuesday for pirouettes, jetes, gravity-defying leaps and maybe even some bumps and grinds as Michelle Obama inaugurates a new dance series.

Dancers of all types - ballet, modern, hip hop and Broadway - take over the room, first for an afternoon workshop, during which students from around the country will have the chance to work with some of the biggest names in dance.

Then, after a short break, the students return to see their mentors perform in an hour-long, star-studded show. Even Broadway's young "Billy Elliot" will be there - four Billys actually, from the show's rotating cast.

But the main attraction is the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and that's because its celebrated artistic director, Judith Jamison, soon to retire after two decades in the job, is the honoree of the event.

"What a rare opportunity, to be invited by your country's first lady to be honored like this," Jamison said in a weekend interview. "I've been to the White House a couple of times before, but this event is totally unique. It's so terribly important to recognize this art form and to understand how important it is to the fabric of this country."

"This will be another clarion call to people: Pay attention to your arts!" Jamison said. "My dancers are so excited."

Big party week for the Obamas
By Christina Wilkie - 09/12/10 05:57 PM ET

________________________ ________________________ ____

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have a packed social schedule this week, with two major galas and a reception for college athletes.

On Monday evening, the President will welcome collegiate star athletes to the White House for a reception at 5:45 p.m. The annual event, first held by former President George W. Bush, recognizes outstanding student athletes in more than a dozen sports, including field-hockey, lacrosse, and volleyball. Neither of Obama's alma maters, Columbia University and Harvard University, made the grade.

On Wednesday the First Couple will don black tie for the annual Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute gala, one of the more entertaining political galas of the Washington fall season. A number of entertainers are being honored with awards, including Eva Longoria Parker, five-time Grammy winner Arturo Sandoval, and musician Sheila E. Also participating in the festivities will be Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Hopefully the Obamas get some rest Thursday or Friday, because they will be back in formalwear on Saturday night for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's (CBCF) annual Phoenix Awards dinner. The dinner will mark the culmiantion of the foundation's 40th Annual Legislative Conference.

Honorees at the dinner will include New Jersey State Assembly Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver, actor and humanitarian Harry Belafonte, journalist Simeon Booker, and renowned choreographer Judith Jamison.

Washingtonians will recall that White House party-crashers Tareq and Michaele Salahi allegedly snuck into the CBCF dinner in 2009. Expect security to be extra tight this time around.

The Washington social season unofficially begins Saturday night with the Washington National Opera's season opening gala, and ends in early December with the Kennedy Center Honors.

Obama may delay Hawaiian vacation over tax fight
CNN News ^ | November 30, 2010 | Ed Henry, CNN Senior White House Correspondent

Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama is considering at least a short delay to the start of his holiday vacation in Hawaii so he can try to work out a deal with congressional Republicans on the Bush tax cuts that expire December 31, CNN has learned.

Two senior administration officials tell CNN the White House has been getting signals that the lame duck session of Congress could drag on past December 18, when the president is scheduled to depart for Hawaii.

Obama has privately said he is willing to stay in Washington until Christmas Eve if necessary to finish the contentious debate over taxes, the officials said.
