Wolrd Cup: Vuvuzelas need to go
« on: June 12, 2010, 06:42:56 PM »
These things are driving me nuts, as they sound like a swarm of bees when watching the matches.  Hopefully, they will be filtered out in the upcoming matches in South Africa, or at least ban them from the fans.

If you don't know that they are, (from wiki), a vuvuzela, sometimes called a "lepatata" (its Setswana name) or a stadium horn, is a blowing horn, approximately one metre in length, commonly blown by fans at football matches in South Africa.

In any case, USA was lucky to tie against the might England, but a tie is a tie.

As for BANNING them, it was discussed

The vuvuzela came to international attention during the run-up to the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2010 FIFA World Cup, both hosted in South Africa. The world football governing body, FIFA, wanted to ban the use of vuvuzelas during the World Cup 2010 because of concerns that hooligans could use the instrument as a weapon and that businesses could place advertisements on vuvuzelas. However the South African Football Association (SAFA) made a presentation that vuvuzelas were essential for an authentic South African football experience,[2]  and FIFA decided in July 2008 to drop the ban, allowing vuvuzelas at Confederations Cup.[20]  President of FIFA Sepp Blatter opposed banning the vuvuzela, saying "We should not try to Europeanise an African World Cup."[21]  FIFA ultimately decided to allow the instrument for the 2010 World Cup as well,[22]  except for Vuvuzelas being longer than one metre.

I told my wife the same thing, no wonder why there's so much fighting in the crowds, everyone's annoying one another with that noise >:(

exactly my thaughts swarm of bees.
its not that bad sound but they overdo it, it loses its charm when its constantly blown, cant hear the people cheering, but africans are by far the most enthousiastic fans, like in a trance even when they re losing.

Get rid get rid get rid...You couldn't even hear the chants from the england supporters last night and when teams score you can hardly hear an increase in noise cos of those fucking horns...it just doesnt feel like watching a proper match

from BBC

South Africa ponders vuvuzela ban after complaints

The vuvuzela has already made a big impact at the World Cup

South Africa's World Cup organising chief Danny Jordaan may ban vuvuzelas from inside stadiums after complaints from broadcasters and supporters.

The constant sound of the high-pitched horn-like instrument has so far drowned out any of the atmosphere-generating singing usually associated with games.

And Jordaan, when asked if he would get rid of them, told BBC Sport: "If there are grounds to do so, yes.

"We did say that if any land on the pitch in anger we will take action."

France captain Patrice Evra has already blamed the noise generated by the vuvuzelas, which has been likened to the drone of thousands of bees, for his side's poor showing in their opening group game against Uruguay which finished goalless.

He said: "We can't sleep at night because of the vuvuzelas. People start playing them from 6am.

"We can't hear one another out on the pitch because of them."

Jordaan conceded that while the noise was irritating for some people, they were doing all they could to minimise the impact.

"We've tried to get some order," he continued. "We have asked for no vuvuzelas during national anthems or stadium announcements. It's difficult but we're trying to manage the best we can.

"We've had some broadcasters and individuals (complaining) and it's something we are evaluating on an on-going basis."

Jordaan admitted that he is not a huge fan of them himself. "I would prefer singing," he said.

"It's always been a great generator of a wonderful atmosphere in stadiums and I would try to encourage them to sing.

"In the days of the struggle (against apartheid) we were singing, all through our history it's our ability to sing that inspired and drove the emotions."

white, 100%

Blacks think different about "culture". For them, culture is running round a fire, hammering on some bongos and sticking wooden sticks into all possible and impossible parts of their bodies.
