Anyone here read Stephen Kings "The Dark Tower Series"?
« on: June 14, 2010, 02:50:48 PM »
inspired by Robert Brownings "childe Roland to the Dark Tower came"...

the poem

http://www.stephenking.com/darktower/childe_roland.html

The guns were empty and they boiled at him, transmogrified into an Eye and a Hand, and he stood, screaming and reloading, his mind far away and absent, letting his hands do their reloading trick. Could he hold up a hand, tell them he had spent a thousand years learning this trick and others, tell them of the guns and the blood that had blessed them? Not with his mouth. But his hands could speak their own tale.

I do not aim with my hand;
He who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
I aim with my eye.
I do not shoot with my hand;
He who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
I shoot with my mind.

I do not kill with my gun;
He who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father.
I kill with my heart.

...the man in black fled across to desert and the gunslinger followed

i have. and re-read the 'Drawing of the Three' several times. it's amazing that you can read a book more than once and still feel all the suspense the second and third readings.

i recommend that u buy the first of this 7 part series...

Roland the protagonist shows up in quite a few of S.K. books (for example Insomnia) and Flagg the antagonist shows up in "The stand"

i thought that he copped out a bit at the end of the wastelands. like he got a block, and finished it fast when he didn't really have the vision.  i got partway through 'suzannah' (?} when i got busy with other projects. it is a gripper, he got back on track with that one, but i havent had the time to finish.

I was surprised... and slightly disappointed. Generally, I like surprise endings... but this one felt rushed and wrong.

Interestingly, King has said that he wants to write another Dark Tower book... but I don't see how unless it's a prequel.

i felt it ws wrong all the way....it felt rushed...it felt like he did it just cause he ws expected to..the whole last book had that feel...

hell he even RE WROTE book 1 and changed it...i think his accident screwed him up....

he's written a BUNCH of comics regarding the dark tower...well someone else has written em...i refuse to read them...i dont wanna mess up a good thing in my head

Ever read the Series of novels in which China divides The world up into different Kingdoms? It's like 9 books, starting from 1989 to like 1999. I forgot the name.

Book suggestion for you folks... George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones. I normally don't like these sorts of fantasy books... but I was suggested this by a guy at Barnes and Nobles, took a chance, and ended up reading the whole series in a week (5000 pages). Great book. Next year HBO is making it into a series... Read the book first!

I've read it over the course of a lifetime, I started at 15 and finished in my mid 20's... very dissapointing, that accident really did fuck him up.. the first 2 or 3 books were phenomenal, then towards the end it started to get really weird and the last book in my opinion was garbage... the sum of 6 tomes: Roland the gunslinger gets looped back through time to the beginning of book one (sorry for spoiler) I felt really crappy after waiting so many years for a resolution which King promised, I expected a grand huge finish...instead literally everyone was let down.

Crichton is a much better read, most of his books have been made into movies, I love the medical thriller field he was a master of (died last year) his track record is fucking impeccable

1972 The Terminal Man    * not sure
1975    The Great Train Robbery    * not sure
1976    Eaters of the Dead    * not sure

1987    Sphere    * movie
1990    Jurassic Park    * movie
1992    Rising Sun    * movie
1994    Disclosure    * movie
1995    The Lost World    * movie
1996    Airframe    * movie
1999    Timeline    * movie

Good poem!

Same here. Well, I did read the first Gunslinger book from 1982, but never got beyond that one. The Talisman had similar elements to it.

He has written some amazing books over the years and some of his short stories are epic like, but his Gunslinger series is not really my bag. A good author for horror fantasy is hands down Clive Barker: Weaveworld (1987)... A FUCKED up story about how a flying carpet can change the entire world as we know it.

King has some alright works here and there, but overall for a more consistent author I much prefer Robin Cook or Michael Crichton (RIP)  great, great writers, the guy who wrote DaVinci code (Dan Brown) is also showing a lot of promise!
