Once a government pet, BP now a capitalist tool
By: Timothy P. Carney

June 9, 2010

In this May 30, 2010 file photo, BP PLC CEO Tony Hayward talks to reporters as he visits a Coast Guard command center in Venice, La. BP's inability to contain the worst oil spill in U.S. history has focused attention on CEO Tony Hayward's words and deeds over the past six weeks - and the scrutiny has not yielded a flattering image. (AP file photo)

As BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig was sinking on April 22, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., was on the phone with allies in his push for climate legislation, telling them he would soon roll out the Senate climate bill with the support of the utility industry and three oil companies — including BP, according to the Washington Post.

Kerry never got to have his photo op with BP chief executive Tony Hayward and other regulation-friendly corporate chieftains. Within days, Republican co-sponsor Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., repudiated the bill following a spat about immigration, and Democrats went back to the drawing board.

But the Kerry-BP alliance for an energy bill that included a cap-and-trade scheme for greenhouse gases pokes a hole in a favorite claim of President Obama and his allies in the media — that BP’s lobbyists have fought fiercely to be left alone. Lobbying records show that BP is no free-market crusader, but instead a close friend of big government whenever it serves the company’s bottom line.

While BP has resisted some government interventions, it has lobbied for tax hikes, greenhouse gas restraints, the stimulus bill, the Wall Street bailout, and subsidies for oil pipelines, solar panels, natural gas and biofuels.

Now that BP’s oil rig has caused the biggest environmental disaster in American history, the Left is pulling the same bogus trick it did with Enron and AIG: Whenever a company earns universal ire, declare it the poster boy for the free market.

As Democrats fight to advance climate change policies, they are resorting to the misleading tactics they used in their health care and finance efforts: posing as the scourges of the special interests and tarring “reform” opponents as the stooges of big business.

Expect BP to be public enemy No. 1 in the climate debate.

There’s a problem: BP was a founding member of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP), a lobby dedicated to passing a cap-and-trade bill. As the nation’s largest producer of natural gas, BP saw many ways to profit from climate legislation, notably by persuading Congress to provide subsidies to coal-fired power plants that switched to gas.

In February, BP quit USCAP without giving much of a reason beyond saying the company could lobby more effectively on its own than in a coalition that is increasingly dominated by power companies. Theymade out particularly well in the House’s climate bill, while natural gas producers suffered.

But two months later, BP signed off on Kerry’s Senate climate bill, which was hardly a capitalist concoction. One provision BP explicitly backed, according to Congressional Quarterly and other media reports: a higher gas tax. The money would be earmarked for building more highways, thus inducing more driving and more gasoline consumption.

Elsewhere in the green arena, BP has lobbied for and profited from subsidies for biofuels and solar energy, two products that cannot break even without government support. Lobbying records show the company backing solar subsidies including federal funding for solar research. The U.S. Export-Import Bank, a federal agency, is currently financing a BP solar energy project in Argentina.

Ex-Im has also put up taxpayer cash to finance construction of the 1,094-mile Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline carrying oil from the Caspian Sea to Ceyhan, Turkey—again, profiting BP.

Lobbying records also show BP lobbying on Obama’s stimulus bill and Bush’s Wall Street bailout. You can guess the oil giant wasn’t in league with the Cato Institute or Ron Paul on those.

BP has more Democratic lobbyists than Republicans. It employs the Podesta Group, co-founded by John Podesta, Obama’s transition director and confidant. Other BP troops on K Street include Michael Berman, a former top aide to Vice President Walter Mondale; Steven Champlin, former executive director of the House Democratic Caucus; and Matthew LaRocco, who worked in Bill Clinton’s Interior Department and whose father was a Democratic congressman. Former Republican staffers, such as Reagan alumnus Ken Duberstein, also lobby for BP, but there’s no truth to Democratic portrayals of the oil company as
an arm of the GOP.

Two patterns have emerged during Obama’s presidency: 1) Big business increasingly seeks profits through more government, and 2) Obama nonetheless paints opponents of his intervention as industry shills. BP is just the latest example of this tawdry sleight of hand.

Once a government pet, BP now a capitalist tool.

Damn, that's a lot of information I didn't know. But you're right, this puts his inaction in perspective.

Why the fuck are we funding pipelines for BP?  ::)

And what is John Podesta doing lobbying for this company?  Podesta was one of the architects of the Stim Bill through the Apollo Alliance.  I posted some threads onh this.

I need to research what BP got out of the stim bill since Podesta is the link.

Can you stay on topic for one minute without bringing up McCain or Palin? I fail to see how McCain has anything to do with the massive amount of lobbying BP has done on behalf of Democrat-pushed agendas.

I see it as both dem and repub agendas.

and obama slashed a lot of their tax cuts, so he's not 100% a lapdog.

Nice spin job.  240 - this story is going to blow up, trust kme.  Podeata also runs the Center for American Progress or at least has a big position there and they give obama a lot of advice and have his ear on a lot of stuff.

Podesta also is part of thew apollo aliance which crafted the stim bill.  With respect to mclame, this article shows that bp wanted more regulation, in a way that is directly would benefit at our expense.

Bush = didn't stop 911, lied about WMD, and failed to win the wars.
Obama = didn't leave as promised, instead ramped up wars.

I don't think a dem would have started Iraq war, however, in 2003.

Mission as sort of a grand unified field theory for progressive left causes
Communist-Linked Apollo Alliance Dictates to Congress
www.canadafreepress.com
By Matthew Vadum  Friday, July 31, 2009

________________________ ________________________ ___________

President Obama’s new “green jobs” czar Van Jones, an avowed militant communist, had been on the board of the pressure group Apollo Alliance, which aspires to flatten the U.S. economy by having government fund “green jobs” scams, according to the “Glenn Beck Program” earlier this week.

Even worse, the green gangster group, which has ties to ACORN, SEIU, and Center for American Progress president John Podesta, has significant pull in Congress and helped to write the stimulus bill.

The Apollo Alliance “is designed to bring together the elements of organized labor with the community organizers with the green groups, the environmental groups, and to access all of the big foundation money that’s been supportive of those causes in the past,” explained Phil Kerpen, director of policy for Americans for Prosperity.

Jones described the group’s “mission as sort of a grand unified field theory for progressive left causes; it ties all these things together,” Kerpen said. He added

They really admire the Apollo mission, the moon-shot mission, and they think that we need a similar centrally-planned, organized massive mobilization to reorder society and take control of energy and their various other objectives. They admire that and they want it like a moon shot.

Beck asked if Wade Rathke, the disgraced founder of ACORN who was expelled by the radical left-wing group last year for covering up his brother’s embezzlement of nearly $1 million in ACORN funds, had been a member of the Apollo Alliance’s board.

Kerpen responded, “Yes. He’s on — he was until this year on the board of the Tides Foundation and the Tides Center, which are the parent organizations that host the Apollo Alliance.”

Who or what is the Apollo Alliance, and why are they relevant to the movement toward socialism?_______________________________________

As Obama rose to prominence in 2008, rising with him was an agenda represented as a three-legged stool conceived as the brain child of Van Jones, now green jobs czar. But several of the czars answering only to the White House are sent up from the legs of this change oriented alliance stool, like Brian Deese, who worked for John Podesta and was appointed to fashion the ‘cash for clunkers’ government dole debacle designed to keep union jobs solvent by moving union made cars off of storage lots. This three-legged stool is named ‘The Apollo Alliance’ and the legs are unions, the green movement, and ‘social justice‘.

The unions include SEIU, the AFL-CIO, and the United Steelworkers, to name three. The green movement includes Sierra Club, Green Peace, and League of Conservative Voters, to name only three. The ‘social justice’ leg includes ACORN, ‘black farmers’, and the Ella Baker Center, to name three, yet ACORN is literally more than a hundred front organizations funneling taxpayer monies back to radical weatherman Wade Rathke‘s brain child.

It was the goal of Van Jones to integrate these three ‘change oriented’ fronts to achieve a rapid and complete transformation of America, by combining the assets of these general movements under one directive, the Apollo Alliance project. [ Van Jones was an avowed black nationalist serving time in prison when he became an avowed communist. He is now serving in Obama’s administration as the green jobs czar. ]

ACORN was founded by weatherman Wade Rathke, who was subsequently on the board of the Tides Foundation, which funded and gave credence to the Apollo Alliance. SEIU’s current VP, Gerald Hudson, is on the Apollo Board. John Podesta, president of the Soros funded Center For American Progress, is on the Apollo Board. Phil Angelides, once treasury secretary for the bankrupt California government is on the Apollo Board. In fact, if one looks at the board members of the Apollo Alliance, it is peopled by radicals and change oriented activists who have functioned in leadership roles for activist groups.

If you are not familiar with a social methodology know euphemistically as the Cloward-Piven Strategy, it would be good to take a long look at that methodology for changing America. Basically, the strategy embraces overloading services funded by the federal government in order to crash the system and sweep away the powers that be, to be replaced by ‘social justice’ mongers, the green movement, and various social change orgs like unions. Manufactured crisis is the hallmark of the Cloward-Piven strategy. Does Rahm Emanuel’s crisis quote come to mind? It should! To activist leadership, a crisis should never be allowed to go to waste.

That Cloward-Piven strategy to crash the system of federal funded programs, combined with a fascist approach to taking over control of major aspects of the American economy is what the Obama Administration is all about. The evidence is now overwhelming that such is the goal. The people writing the agenda for their brand of federal government are in fact right out of the Apollo Alliance and subsidiary orgs such as ACORN, SEIU. And Green Peace. Harry Reid even thanked the Apollo Alliance for helping to write the Stimulus bill, and the TARP bill oozed from a similar source.

The BP lobbyist whose brother has Obama’s ear
By: Timothy P. Carney
Examiner Columnist
06/14/10 12:04 PM EDT

________________________ ____________________

John Podesta of the Center for American Progress is nearly scripting the White House’s BP response, according to Jonathan Weisman at the Wall Street Journal in a blog post picked up by Drudge. But Weisman leaves out a key detail:

Podesta’s brother is a BP lobbyist.

Tony and John Podesta cofounded the Podesta Group, a K Street lobbying firm. Now BP is a client, and Tony is one of the lobbyists on the account, according to the firm’s latest lobbying filings.

Tony and John have worked on the same team before. Last year, Wal-Mart came out big for a federal law mandating that employers insure their employees. In this announcement, Center for American Progress was a partner. And Tony Podesta, at the time, was doing Wal-Mart’s health-care lobbying.

[I wrote on the Podestas' White House access here.]

This entire gulf situtation fits their agenda perfectly!! Anyone who has read cloward and pivons can connect the dots real fast, or anyone who understands the facts of history. Obama and his admin love this disaster,  and if you think that obama has done all he can do , stop kidding yourself !!  When Obama wanted to control the banks, boom done!!!  the auto industry, boom done!! insurance, boom done!! healthcare, boom done!! student tuition, boom done!!  The reason he took control of these situations is because those were deemed emergencies, because he needed that control to further his marxist agenda.  He doesn't view this oil spill as an emergency, rather an opportunity, and he is going to keep riding that wave and milking it as long as possible.  I know he comes on t.v. and says how he doesn't stop thinking about it and blah blah , but this asshat also said he would air every debate over healthcare on c-span, and we all know how that went down.
