question about Sweat...
« on: June 28, 2010, 01:47:36 PM »
this has always confused me - why does sweat have its own distinct odor depending on where on the body it is? the principle of sweating is just to cool the body by releasing water from the skin to cool in the air..so what makes it smell so fucking bad?
for example - foot sweat smells like vinegar.
                - arm pit sweat smells like onions.
                - ass sweat smells like old cheese.
what accounts for this distinctness and is the disgustingness really necessary??

I hate sweat.  I'm pretty good in high temps but once the sweat starts the fucking flood gates open.

Just looking at this equation John seems like you been eating vinegar, onions and cheese. Onions and vinegar come though sweat glands being they carry some validity as antioxident qualities and are digested quickly, cheese on the other hand takes awhile and exits through the intestines hence smelling badly. Everytime I eat cheese it takes me a couple of days to shit it out and smells terrible.

It primarily depends on the type of sweat glands that are located in the different regions of the body.  Within the armpits and groin area, you have what are known as apocrine glands.  These particular glands are known for secreting sweat which is thicker in consistency and also prone to smell foul once it interacts with bacteria in the surrounding area.

The interaction between sweat and bacteria is simple, when you sweat, bacteria that is found within different regions of the body, begin to consume (literally eat) the sweat.  The waste product then excreted by the bacteria is what produces the odor you smell.  Different types of bacteria exist throughout your body, hence the different types of smells.

I forgot to mention that the food you eat can also cause you to smell in certain ways.  Without going into too many details, ever notice how Indian folks (no offense) who consume heavy amounts of curry have a distinct aroma?

Food can do it to 'ya,

Shave your pitts (#1 clipper, not razor) and you'll smell a lot less.  Don't shave your ass or sneaky farts are a thing of the past.
