The Wire season 2 is severely underrated. It is slower paced than season 1 but just as deep when it comes to social commentary.

I will admit that Season 5 of The Wire is the weakest of all but the newspaper was a pivotal part of the season because the newspaper represented an old institution that had fallen and could no longer be relied on.  All 5 of the seasons of The Wire focused in large part on the breakdown of old mainstay institutions in the U.S. (police, schools, jails, unions, media, government) and the effect that this institutional breakdown has had over time on different demographics of society.

The Wire is deep......

you betcha.  great show on a lot of levels.
