Vince set the trend for the baggy shirts, always ahead of his time.

Believe Gironda was married 4 or 5 times. Never heard that he drank himself to death. Did have a hard time recovering from an injury after one of his special designed chinning devices  broke, when he was using it. Maybe that lead to extra heavy drink, don't know. Think he shattered his leg pretty bad. He did die broke and his former gym is now a parking lot on Ventura Blvd.

Gironda put major use to the "V" dipping bar (had the knuckles forward or facing inward for extra stretch and influence on the pecs...try it some time and you will know what I mean) and the Scott curling bench (which was really Gironda design).   Also the Roman chair and Sissy squats for legs. Gironda had dozens of different ways of preforming regular exercise. Including the position of the grip/fingers/wrist/elbows, etc. (even now days the elbow position is important in BB'ing). And all the special ways to do chins. Put heavy attention to 8X8's, 10X10's, tri sets, quad sets, etc. Ahead of his time with regards to advance training.

Did stunt work and was an expert horseman, like his father was in the movies. Use to be a lot of riding stables along the LA river in North Hollywood back in the day. Was a cool dude and all that but very moody I have been told. Most genius might be considered half mad anyway.

Great post did you ever train there? I bought a couple of his old courses and you are correct the hand positions are very important to target exactly the muscle group in different areas.

Vince died from alcohol abuse.
He talked shit about Bill Phillips, and hated him.
So, good enuff for me.

It's no secret that Vince smoked and drank, but not excessively. He really over exerted himself getting ready for his 80th birthday. A huge party was planned full of his old musclehead buddies and he wanted to look good. He died just days before it.

He talked shit about Bill Phillips and rightly so.Bill tried to sell himself as a modern trainer and Vince as a dinosaur but Bill brought nothing to the table in terms of knowledge. Bill was rumoured to be a guy that dealt bogus roids containing no anabolics at all, although I can't confirm this. Shady character though. He started Muscle Media 2000 magazine and pretty much dedicated it to training on juice. You can see how Vince would not be a fan.

Mr Nobody: Never worked out at Vince's.  My two uncles worked at the  Paramount lot (Van Ness & a block up from Melrose) and I stayed with them for 3 or 4 summers during school break. They knew a lot of the old veteran  BB'ers around Santa Monica, Hollywood and the Valley. They trained at Vince's on occasion, Golds, Worlds, etc. I'm 38 now so it was  around '87, '88 etc that I lived in Hollywood (just above the Whiskey and than near the Bodhi Tree on Melrose) That training information I got from the uncles and their BB'ing bud's was priceless. .Something you could never get from any book or video.

First impression my uncles got about Gironda was one moody little wop (their words) who could change moods day by day (or hour to hour) But if he liked you, and got to know you, was an OK guy (their words again). Most of his equipment was home made or he had a fab shop make it up for him. One of a kind exercise equipment never to be seen again today. Robert Blake and Bill Smith use to be there a lot I had been told. Along with some other movie and writer types. Gironda lived up stairs at that time I believe. Gironda was indeed a grand master of BB'ing than and to a certain degree, now.

Anyone know anything about Bill or William Smith. Heard he was quite the strongman back in the day. But had a drinking problem like Gironda.

JPM, Good stuff! Thanks!

I knew Vince and trained at his place a few times while I was stationed ar Pendleton and hung around with the movie crowd (mostly Universal Studios stunt guys and gals and a few of the less than little people in the biz) way before Universal opened their park to the public.

I think I wrote pretty extensively about this subject a while back and will be glad to repeat my limited observations if there is any interest.

Bill Smith did train at Vince's as well as many others from Universal which was just about a mile up Ventura Blvd.

When I was there, the whole damn world was a completely different place and the entire SF valley was mainly horse ranches .... but more of that later if there is any interest on how all this bodybuilding shit actually got underway in SoCal .... and beyond!

Thanks for your pretty damn accurate comments above, JPM. Always good to read comments from people who know what they are talking about as opposed to the few who assume they know of what they speak ..... without backing it up with facts or personal observations.

Great information. Yea his gym equipment I have seen pictures of very few machines or pulleys but did the trick. I have seen Bill in the old motorcycle movies being fond of motorcycles he was one of my favorite actors had some impressive arms is he still alive?

I did those for a while - as Vince & Larry Scott have described.
It's the only flat bench pressing movement I ever "felt" working the chest.
They were effective for me, but put a lot of stress on my shoulders due to my poor flexibility.

I think maybe take a more narrow grip would not stress the shoulders as much.

Yeah.
I think another problem is that I performed them on a Smith Machine as Scott instructed.
I haven’t used a Smith for anything the last couple of years because I hate the way it locks you into one plane that seldom follows the natural curve of most movements.

I miss doing clavicular presses.
I may try them again - this time inside of a rack.
