as most of you wont know, there's a huge manhunt on for thjis chap at the moment for shooting his ex, her boyfriend (he's dead) and an unarmed copper (dead).

the shooter (rauol moat) was a bouncer and 'bodybuilder' (aren't they all?!) so now the media are picking up on his steroid use.

Raoul Moat's volatile personality could be linked to steroid abuse, an expert warned yesterday.

The bodybuilder used the drugs to fill out his 190cm (6ft 3in) frame but the side effects include paranoia and aggression.

The grievances the 37-year-old built up against the police and Samantha Stobbart, his ex-girlfriend, have been brought to the surface by the drugs, claimed Dr Clive Sims, a forensic psychologist.

‘The use of steroids affects an individual’s ability to appreciate the consequences of his actions as well as their perception of reality,’ he said.

In a letter to police, Moat described his anger. ‘It’s like the Hulk, it takes over and it’s more than anger and it happens only when I’m hurt,’ he wrote.

Dr Sims said Moat’s behaviour reminded him of Derrick Bird, the Cumbrian taxi driver who shot dead 12 people before turning the gun on himself on June 2.

In particular, Moat has focused on the police as being the source of his woes and appears to have been tipped over the edge by Miss Stobbart incorrectly telling him that she was seeing a policeman to keep him away, he said.

‘I think he’s putting himself in a position where he wants to die in what is called “suicide by cop”,’ Dr Sims added.

These drugs, which bodybuilders take to help them to increase muscle mass, are associated in the popular imagination with aggression. And that isn’t just an urban myth or something hyped by the tabloid press. It’s true: studies have shown that these androgenic compounds can, when taken in quantity and over time, lead to changes in the user’s personality. (They cause nasty physical side-effects too, of course.) Which is not to say, obviously, that Moat wasn’t an angry individual even before he started abusing steroids.

They may increase the potential for explosive violence, boost aggression and also there’s a link with mania or hypomania. In fact, users may take them partly for these effects, believing they are becoming more masculine and meaner. Friends of Moat say he was so bulked-up by steroids that he “filled his pants, he was so muscle-bound”. Really, though, steroids are a road to nowhere and in my view you’d have to be exceedingly foolish to take them.

People considering self-medicating with some ‘roids purchased clandestinely at the local gym, or from any other source, should keep in mind the range of horrid sexual distortions – among many other health problems – they can cause: gynaecomastia in men (development of breasts), as well as testicular atrophy and infertility. Women become unpleasantly hirsute. Steroids are definitely not worth it.
