Mark Hunt confirms UFC deal, fight with Sean McCorkle at UFC 119
by Steven Marrocco on Jul 08, 2010 at 7:20 pm ET
Former K-1 and PRIDE heavyweight Mark Hunt (5-6 MMA, 0-0 UFC) was about to hop on a plane when he spoke today to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). And when asked to explain his sudden move into the UFC's octagon, he had one thing to say.

"Why not?"

The 36-year-old fighter confirmed a four-fight deal with the UFC and a Sept. 25 UFC 119 meeting with Midwest standout Sean McCorkle (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC).

FiveOuncesofPain.com first reported the Hunt vs. McCorkle fight, which takes place in Indianapolis.

Hunt, who hails from South Auckland, New Zealand, has not fought since May 2009, when former Strikeforce and DREAM champion Gegard Mousasi submitted him in the first round of DREAM's open-weight "Super Hulk" tournament. It was his fifth consecutive loss in MMA.

Despite his recent rough road, Hunt's earlier performances bring nostalgia to hardcore fans who witnessed his tremendous upset victories over Wanderlei Silva and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic in PRIDE's heyday.

The heavyweight also gave fans a jolt at PRIDE Shockwave 2006 when he threatened the once-invincible Fedor Emelianenko with an Americana arm lock before falling prey to the submission hold's cousin, a kimura.

As a kickboxer, Hunt has amassed a 30-13 record and holds notable K-1 victories over Stefan Leko and Jerome Le Banner.

McCorkle, an Indianapolis resident, also makes his UFC debut at UFC 119, which takes place at the 18,000-seat Conseco Fieldhouse. Thus far, he has fought as a super heavyweight with four of his seven victories coming by way of first-round stoppage.

Most recently, McCorkle stopped veteran journeyman Johnathan Ivey by second-round TKO for the Indianapolis-based Legends of Fighting promotion.

Hunt vs. McCorkle will be part of UFC 119's un-aired preliminary card.

Very likeable guy who always fights the best-- I really don't think he's going to have a long UFC career though.

He has excellent striking for a HW, can seriously take a punch and he has very good conditioning for someone his size, but I think he has too much mileage on him and wont do well in the cage.

The only reason he is even fighting is because the UFC inherited his contract when they bought Pride. The UFC owes him some fights.

There really is nothing more to add about this washed up Pride fighter.

I agree.

I really enjoyed watching him in K1, but i think he will have a short career in the UFC.

Don't be mad at me for telling it how it is.
All I am saying is don't twist things.
It's not like the UFC signed him  to mix things up or something.

You need to relax bro.

The UFC had options on those contracts a few years ago,  Mark's option was declined because they weren't sure he could get under 265.  Mark has fought for 3 years in other orgs around 265 so the UFC offered him a NEW deal.

That is untirely untrue...he was NOT offered a new contract per recent comment by Dana.

Plus come on, let's be realistic, he is worthless these days and is a threat to no one.

Is this why Baroni and Trigg were signed also?

I am not trying to argue with you, but let's be real here for a moment.

What does the UFC want with a one-dimensional guy, with no name recognition in the US, who might not be able to make weight, and on a losing 5 FIGHT losing streak of all things?

I tend to believe Dana on this one. I bet they have to buy out Hunts contract, and instead of doing that, they let him fight, watch him lose, and his contract is up, and the UFC saves money.

Regardless, Dana's story is very believable on this one.

I think Dana likes to bring in Pride guys and feed them to the lions.  Most get devoured.  The ones that survive make him money.  It's a win win for Dana.

Jeez I thought you said the the best fighters only fight in the UFC.  The UFC could have easily bought out his contract.  They didn't owe him any fights that could not have been bought out.  Please get your shit straight.  You look bad

You must have missed my post earlier showing Dana's comments.

They maybe could have bought him out, maybe they couldn't, or didn't want to pay for the hefty contract he maybe had.

Regardless, Hunt brings nothing to the table. Even Dana admits that.

He was probably signed because he is a known commodity and the HW division is a joke. Why not add Hunt?

A known commodity...really? To us maybe, but not in general.

Most CURRENT UFC fans don't have a clue who Hunt is. He is on a 5 fight losing streak,

I think that your last comment is telling. The fact that most UFC fans (including you) don't know who Hunt is demonstrates the overwhelming stupidity and total lack of knowledge that most "fans" possess when it comes to the sport of MMA and its history as a whole.

Hunt is irrelevant in today's MMA anyways and in comparison to today's MMA elite, he wasn't really that talented.

Besides, he is IRRELEVANT in the HW picture today and is obviously unhealthy.
