I spent about $100 on an engagement ring and the same on a wedding ring. Fuck paying a fortune for something so trivial. If the bitch loves you, she'll be happy with a Pepsi tab pull ring.

Hint: Don't overpay because you'll just have to get it cut off her finger in two years anyway.  :D

Why do you have to have one?  Doesn`t make sense.  I guess people still marry morons as there is certainly not a shortage of morons.  I will never understand the incredibly stupid things people do and the customs/traditions they follow for no apparent reason whatsoever.  ???
You are actually right

Now please explain why you drop money on very expensive shoes for yourself, Mr Double Standard

Been thinking about this myself. I'm not a cheapskate by any means, just got back from taking my lady on a week long vacation down in Playa Del Carmen which wasn't all that expensive, but the point is, I don't mind spending money once in awhile. I'm thinking about an engagement ring, and have been looking around. I'm always suspicious about the rule of thumb things because when an industry makes up a rule or ocassion, like Secretary Day (Florists) and 1,2 or 3 months salary (jewelers) I tend to ignore it. my gross monthly is about 10k, but I can't imagine spending 10K on an engagement ring. I've seen very nice rings that any woman should be happy with in the $1200 range. Even then, something tells me $1200 for a ring says "Hey everyone, we are planning to get married one day" seems a bit silly...

You make a good point, however if you are a prudent saver you should have no problem paying at least 10k cash on a ring.

Also for alot of women they have been raised and conditioned by their friends/family to expect a certain level of quality.

DO you think Big Mal's sister would settel for anything less the a 25k rock?

One girl told me she expects 3 months salary! ??? :o

I expect to dish out 10-15k depending on what I am earning at the time.

Not sure about the States, but three months salary is about right in Europe

I'm pretty good at saving, and I have no problem paying for a 10k ring. My problem is I think for me, it's ridiculous to pay 10K for the ring. Maybe it's my upbringing, coming from a family that didn't have a lot of extra money. Maybe it's because I can recall hauling hay in the summertime, or working in a grain silo in 100 deg temp for $5 an hour, or maybe its just because I don't personally see the significant importance of an expensive ring to signify my love. Hell it could be that I truly am more of a cheapskate than I think I am. I guess these days I'm more of the Dave Ramsey kin of guy where a paid off mortgage and car with no debt is more of a status symbol than the Lamborghini.

I think what will happen is I will have a limit in mind, much like you do when you start house hunting. By the time I actually buy, it might be a little more than I planned. I can see "upgrading" 10 yrs down the road, but initially, both of us having been married before, I can't see spending more than $1000 to $1500 on an engagement ring. (starting to see why I'm still not on my first marriage as I type this...)

WTF?? Buy what you can afford. My wife and I have been at it now for 11+ years. At the time, I could comfortably afford a very nice .5 carat certified ring for 1600.00. She loves it to this day. Could we have gone bigger, sure, but why. Also, we had a very reasonable wedding....fucking retards who drop loads on a ring and wedding are exactly that....fucking retards!

I bought my first and only ring in my life for my girlfriend I had when i was around 19 or 20.  I just got a Zales card with a $10,000 limit.  I bought two things.  A Seiko 600m dive watch and a $4000 ring.  When we broke up a year or so later she threw it and it fell down the sewer drain and never seen again.  My watch lasted about 15 years

There you go I bet you wish you had the 4k back. Wonder how much Goodrum spent on a ring for Queen Vissy?

probably not much.  I'm sure the only ring he has bought Vissy is a cock ring.  About the ring, at the time I went crazy.  I remember spending a couple hours with numerous coat hangers spliced together trying to reach it and I even put super glue on the end of it and still couldn't get it.  Yea I was a little pissed.  The funny thing is we ended up back together for a very short while after that.  She was my first blond girlfriend.

Ive been told by my mom and other old school women, that 1.5 carats is the minimum. Anything less and the person is being cheap. And trust me, I know cheap, I know of people who go the utmost extreme to being cheap.
Whether or not how long you have been married means nothing. A person could be married for 25 yrs and be miserable, yet the other partner is said to be "happy", or both are living in misery, yet one is delusional in thinking that the over is happy. Not saying this is you.

11 yrs ago a $1,600 ring was EASY to be had as we were not in a recession and we were still feeling a lil of the .com money.

what a stupid tradition..

women... they want everything equal and at the same time they want the man to keep on these silly traditions like buying expensive wedding rings, buying gifts, paying for everything on night out etc. etc.. hows the expression.. you can't have your cake and eat it too...
