SILVA WILL BE WAITING IF GSP CAN MAKE THE WEIGHT
« on: July 22, 2010, 10:30:23 AM »

It could be the biggest fight in UFC history.

It could break all the records.

And according to UFC president Dana White, everyone keeps asking for it, so he might just have to give it to them.

The longstanding fight fans have been asking for is to see widely regarded pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva match up with the fighter closely nipping at his heels for the top spot in UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. The fight has been brought up to White for years, and both camps have expressed interest.

Silva's manager, Ed Soares, says the Brazilian champion is all about big fights, and that means bringing in whoever is going to present the biggest challenge.

The biggest question surrounding the potential mega match-up right now is what weight class the two fighters would face off at? Silva rules the 185-pound division, while St-Pierre is a multi-time welterweight champion.

"First of all, I think to protect both champions, I think it's smarter to do it at a catchweight possibly, but who knows? Anderson... I don't think he could. Maybe he could, I'm not sure, make it down to 170. I think it's much easier and more likely that Georges goes up to 185," Soares told MMAWeekly Radio recently.

Silva has fluctuated in weight a lot over the years. The one-time 167-pound champion in Shooto, Silva fought at 175 pounds when for Rumble on the Rock, at his natural weight class at 185 pounds, and has also made a couple of appearances at 205 pounds, knocking out both James Irvin and former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin.

Soares doesn't rule out Silva's freakish ability to put on and take off weight, and believes that the potential dynamite of promoting a two weight class champion could be just the formula that gets the superstars in the Octagon together.

"Could Anderson do it? He probably could," Soares commented about Silva. "It would be interesting. It would be a great promotion. If either one could make each other's weight class, it would be a great promotion to be the first guy holding two belts at the same time."

When it comes to Silva's career, it's all about the big fight, and Soares isn't in the business of turning down opportunities for his fighters.

"Tell GSP to make weight, we'll be waiting," Soares said simply.

Both fighters are occupied presumably for the rest of 2010 with Silva facing Chael Sonnen in August, and St-Pierre defending his belt against Josh Koscheck most likely in December. If both are victorious, the clash of two of the best ever in MMA could be the biggest fight in UFC history.

I actually think GSP would grind out a decision.

I would have to go with GSP.

After the Silva/Mai fight, I question if Silva could keep up a high paced fight for five rounds.
He was slightly gassed just from his antics. Imagine having GSP all over him for five rounds.

GSP would not be cutting weight either, so the advantage is there for him as well.

Interesting you say that.  Mark Munos was a guest on this week's Pro MMA radio show.  Mark is one of Anderson's main training partners, and they asked him what if anything is Anderson doing that's different, to prepare for Chael.  Mark said that Anderson brought in a whole new strength and conditioning coach to help improve his cardio.  He said that was the main reason for why Anderson ran for the entire last round of the Maia fight...

I'll be shocked if Anderson doesn't come close to killing him.  This should be an easy one for the spider.

Sonnen is a respectable opponent, but I expect nothing less then for Silva to destroy Sonnen.

Silva is most likely seeking redemption in this fight. Add in all the shit talking that Sonnen has done, and I think we might see the closest thing
to a death in the octagon that we have ever seen.

A GSP/Silva fight would be epic. Both of these guys are not currently being fully tested. They truly are in a league of their own.

I think Silva hasn't been tested.

But GSP has.  He's gone the distance too many times for me to think he hasn't been tested.    Silva, on the other hand, just seems to toy with his opponents.  HE really hasn't been tested yet.

Good point.  But, I look at it like this.  While GSP has not finished as many fights, he does dominate even on his decision wins.  And, he comes out unscathed.

I think that in a P4P ranking, Anderson edges out GSP because he has gone up in weight and done extremely well and because he has been much more dominant in his own weight class.

But, I still think that GSP would be able to stay out of trouble and win a decision against Anderson...

Silva by knockout or GSP by decision. I can't see it going any other way.

Despite the crap quality of the UFC PPV events over the past few months, I would gladly pay 50 bucks to see this fight even if there were no undercards at all.

The possibility of this fight happening kind of makes me want Silva to beat Sonnen just so this fight happens sooner rather than later.

The only other fights in the UFC right now that I find really interesting are Shogun-Silva, Velasquez-Lesnar and Jon Jones fighting a top 205 contender. Since the Lesnar fight is the only one with a definite time table and none of the other fights have been discussed, GSP-Silva is at the top of my wishlist.

There are some good fights already set.  How about JDS vs Big Country?  Or the BJ/Edgar rematch?  Or Fitch/Alves?  Machida/Rampage? All are set.

As far as wish-list fights, GSP/Silva is at the top of my list.  Here are some others:
*Fedor/Lesnar
*Fedor/Velaquez
*Shields/GSP
*Rua/Anderson

I bet money Shields won't even get past the likes of Koz or Fitch or any of the top 3 guys.

He's gonna be exposed as a par fighter.

Shields does need to be tested with better talent before I will say he is anywhere near the top of the WW division.

I give him credit for coming to the UFC, giving up his SF belt and putting his reputation on the line.

I give him credit for that as well.  Respectable.  AND there's more money at the UFC.   Fedor shoulda tucked his tail and done the same.

gsp will have to have a good gameplan and stick with it, imo hed have to take silva down beginning of each rd and try working his elbows and do damage early, as long as gsp stays busy on top and doesnt try to trade strikes with silva standing i think gsp could pull off the win. im sure most of you would agree that gsp should be able to but the spider on his back from some explosive double or single leg takedowns, it might not make for the most exciting fight of the night but thats the only way i see gsp winning. silva will have to stuff gsp,s shots and make him pay for it, if silva can do that i see silva winning this one, but how many guys out there(im talking great wrestlers also) where able to stuff gsp,s takedown attempts?

I keep hearing all this Anderson v. GSP, Anderson v. Shogun talk,  He needs to concentrate on not letting Sonnen take his ass down and put him in the fence and not this superfight bullshit.  Even if he beats Chael I still would like to see Silva v. Vitor.
