After years of speculation and wishful thinking, it appears that Scarface 2 is finally becoming a reality.
Says who? Only Martin Bregman - the producer who masterminded the 1983 remake, starring Al Pacino as Tony Montana, of the 1932 gangster flick Scarface, starring Paul Muni as Tony Camonte.
Marty: Raising Son of Scarface.
In a BlogTalkRadio exclusive, Marty, who also produced such Pacino classics as Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon, confirms that a sequel is forthcoming.
“Well, we’ve killed everybody else. So it’s gonna be tough,” he tells Film Festival Radio host Janice Malone when she asks if there will ever be a Scarface 2.
“You can’t have the Pacino character - pick him up from where he was shot and have him say, ‘You missed!’” Marty, 78, continues.
“No, there’s a way to do this, but it’s not that way. It’s not gonna be the same, with the same character. It can’t be. It could be with the son of that character, but it can’t be with that character.”
Then, when Janice says, “A lot of people who I know are diehard fans and they were hoping that maybe it would be the son or the grandson or something like that,” Marty comes clean, telling her:
Proud papa: Al in the Brian De Palma remake, written by Oliver Stone.
“No, it is the son. We’re working on that now.”
Marty - who later tells Janice that The Godfather is among his three favorite films of all time - also reveals how he once made Universal Pictures an offer they couldn’t refuse.
“I understand that the studio head [at Universal] initially did not want Denzel Washington cast in The Bone Collector and you did, and obviously you won. Is that a true story?” asks Janice of the 1999 flick co-starring Angelina Jolie.
“That’s a very true story,” says Marty. “It took place in a meeting. I wanted Denzel. Denzel was my primary choice. Because he could play this role.
“Remember, I’m talking about a character who couldn’t move any part of his body other than one finger. So all the intelligence this guy had had to be released through his face… I needed a real actor. And Denzel is a real actor.
“And when I went in and they turned me down, they said, ‘Well, we’d have a hard time marketing Denzel in the South and in the North-South’ - they started to give me territories where a black actor is not going to do any business.
"It was because of a threat," Marty tells us of Universal's eventual agreement to cast Denzel (above).
“So at one point during the meeting, which was a number of people, I asked to be alone with the head of that division.
“And I said, ‘Are you aware that your chairman, [Edgar] Bronfman [Jr.], has four black children?’
“He was married to a black lady [Sherri Brewer] then. He had three black kids. How do I know? Because two of them were friendly with my daughter.
“And I said, ‘How is it gonna look if this gets out?’
“And he said, ‘How’s it gonna get out?’
“I said, ‘Trust me, it’ll get out.’
“And the next day, I got an approval.”
How the fuck do you make a movie about a legend like tony montana yes i know he was trying to give his wife a kid and she split on him and its possiable that she got pregnant but knowing hollywood this will be a total piece of crap sequal even thou the SCARFACE was very much a raw movie and was appriciated more when time passed
THERE IS ONLY ONE CONAN, AND ONLY ONE TONY MONTANA
