The wild dogs in Kandahar Province were wonderful companions. For whatever reason, Afghan's abuse and otherwise mistreated the beasts so they were very wary of humans. After feeding them rations we not only earned their trust but a fierce loyalty as well. The dogs would follow us on patrol, take the lead, protect our flanks, and growl at any locals who came too close to our patrol. They would also guard our camp and go ballistic anytime Afghan's approached the gate. By the end the dogs had actually become pretty racist. Nevetheless we loved them and fed them well. The dogs were a highlight of my tour and I truly miss them.
