Boxing between 1920-1990 was HUGE, everyone knew who the heavyweight champ was and quite often who was middle champ, maybe light too. But the multi titles and BS like Mayweather not fighting pac for the sake of boxing and massively - HBO dropping HW boxing has killed it.

But will MMA get as big. The fact is 99 out of 100 people on the street havent heard of Brock or Fedor or BJ Penn. You asked them for a mixed martial artist they ll say "errr Bruce Lee?"

I hope MMA does become huge as fighting is and always will be the ultinate one on one challenge.

i dont think so, as if the whole family is goin to sit around watching the 'grace' of mma, boxing is only in the dolldrums as the heavyweight devision is a bit thin of talent, all the fights are in the lighter weights, these things swing round tho....

What makes a sport so popular is the characters who participate.  This is a fact.  Baseball had Babe Ruth at the beginning.  Boxing had Ali.  Football had Joe Namath.  Tennis had McEnroe.  Golf had Nicholas and Palmer and now Woods.  Basketball had many like Dr. J, Bird, Magic.  There are so many other that made these sports interesting and fun to watch and participate in.  MMA really does not have any real characters that make it interesting to the general public except the fighting.  All other sports too give back to the community in BIG ways.  Millions of dollars are donated and generated for charities by other sports.  I am sure the UFC gives back something but nothing so notable as to anyone knows who.  I mean how many of you can name a charity or something the UFC has donated too.  The one awesome thing they do is support the troops.  That is really cool.  But, even that is more of a moral support which everyone in the country does and support.  Bodybuilding is the same way but even worse because they have been around for 50+ years and have never supported charities nationally to a point where anyone notices.  The Weiders made it a personal business solely to make them money not to popularize it.  MMA is kind of the same thing as what the Weiders have done to BB.  It is their personal business.

Boxing is far far far from dead.  Is it less popular than in the 90's.  I would say yes strictly because someone like Tyson is not around.  Manny seems to be the most popular fighter right now.  Which is great especially for us Filipinos.  It would be great if Mike came back and was like he was 20 years ago.  Hard to believe that will happen but even if he has the skill to kick ass it will help.  Not go in there and look like shit.

I don't think it will. Honestly cause there are too many aspects to it to many styles and techinical points that people as a whole are to lazy to learn about. Much like a lot of the guys walking around in tapout shirts and claiming to be fighters think its all about throwing punches and nothing else. when someone who actually practices or participates in mma. Knows the difference between BJJ and Judo or muay tai and kickboxing the general population will see two guys rolling around on the ground when what is actually happening is a battle for position. Also another reason is the brutality of it all. People aren't ready to see some poor guy (or girl now) get get his arm or ankle nose bent all outta shape.
Basically to sum it up there are too many dimensions for the normal mentality to grasp. Its not all about just hitting anymore.

People have been saying boxing's dead for about 100 years now,  If I turn on ESPN people will be talking about Manny and Floyd having contract issues,  they won't be talking about Fedor's contract issues.  I love both sports.

Boxing is not dead.  When I see one MMA fighter go against another one for a 20 million dollar purse each I will say it's big.  Mayweather against Pacman will be more than 20 million each for fighter.  MMA guys have never even have been paid a half million for one fight.

Boxing is a brutal sport with a long rich history.  I like MMA but boxing goes back forever.

The best striker in MMA wouldn't be in the top ten in boxing.  He would get destroyed.  The same thing could be said about a boxer against a MMA guy in the octogon.

Boxing is far from dead.
People keep saying that it is, while all evidence lies to the contrary.
Just examine the latest PPV figures.
MMA will never reach the heights of boxing.  Ever.

WTF are you talking about?  Pacquiao and Mayweather are HUGE PPV draws. The only MMA fighter who can come close to their numbers is Lesnar because of his WWE fame.

True...Cock on-his-Chestnar is the only reason John Q public is watching MMA these days...it will always have a decent fanbase...but it's not going to be HUGE the way fanboys like Swede the little homo think

if all you castrated-lobotomized contemporary-male fanboys who live out your ancient-innate proclivities for clan-belonging and ritualized violence vicariously through superior males continue to spend your money on it........it will continue to grow

the way some of you are so eager to watch other males achieve for you , and be masculine for you..........i wouldnt be surprised if someday soon it will be an accepted practice for a group of pre-selected alpha males to fuck your women for you

die hard fans of any sport are kinda wasting time...

They spend their precious time and energy watching other people making a success out of their lives

yes MMA comes to mind... but Fantasy Football is much worse!
