'Mutagenic and carcinogenic agents' blamed for soaring infant mortality, cancers

In Fallujah, a city just 50 miles from Baghdad, life has never been the same since April 2004, when U.S. Marines declared the entire area a free-fire zone and proceeded to do what Marines do best. Packing the most destructive weaponry in the world, American soldiers laid siege to the city, deploying depleted uranium munitions, white phosphorus and tons of conventional ballistics.

Operation Vigilant Resolve went on for a full month. Though U.S. forces allowed an estimated 70,000 women, children and elderly leave the city, to this day the campaign to recapture Fallujah is beset with allegations of war crimes.

In the wake of America's "shock and awe" bombing campaign to take Baghdad, radiation detectors as far away as the United Kingdom noticed a fourfold spike in radioactivity in the atmosphere. At the time, the Department of Defense bragged that the substance, a nuclear byproduct with a fraction of the radioactivity as standard uranium, is commonly ingested by Americans, in food, drinking water and the air, allegedly with no ill effects. Officials went on to say its use would cause "no impact on the health of people and the environment."

Today, according to a study by the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health [PDF link],
rates of cancer, leukemia, infant mortality and sexual mutations in Fallujah are higher than those reported in the aftermath of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear detonations.

The use of Depleted Uranium munitions should be outlawed Worldwide.

Depleted Uranium should not be outlawed, however, America should be more diligent in cleaning it up if that article is genuine.

The article is genuine and DU munitions should be outlawed.

How do you expect the USA to clean up Depleted Uranium? A mop... maybe a vaccum?  Genius.  ::)

DU has a half-life of 4.5 billion years, there is very little decay of those DU materials.

The use of DU in munitions is controversial because of questions about potential long-term health effects.[4][5] Normal functioning of the kidney, brain, liver, heart, and numerous other systems can be affected by uranium exposure, because in addition to being weakly radioactive, uranium is a toxic metal.[6] It is weakly radioactive and remains so because of its long physical half-life (4.468 billion years for uranium-238), but has a considerably shorter biological half-life. The aerosol produced during impact and combustion of depleted uranium munitions can potentially contaminate wide areas around the impact sites or can be inhaled by civilians and military personnel.[7] During a three week period of conflict in 2003 in Iraq, 1,000 to 2,000 tonnes of DU munitions were used, mostly in cities.[8]

Considering who you are and your laughable track record on this forum, your endorsement of this article as being credible is suspect.  This is just my opinion and your post does nothing to change that.  Perhaps you can post some links from the article.

If its really an issue, I would be surprised that there isn't a way to clean it up.

And yes, a good vacuum would work.   ::)

Yes, the study is real.  What the moron is leaving out is that there is no direct link to the alledged weapons.  From the authors:

"Concerns have been expressed for some time about increases in cancer, leukemia and congenital
birth anomalies in Iraq. These have been blamed [4] on mutagenic and carcinogenic agents (like
depleted uranium) employed in the wars of 1991 and 2003. Increases in childhood leukaemia in Basrah
have recently been investigated [5] and the findings confirm that there has indeed been a significant
increase since 1991. Unfortunately, since many reports from Iraq and Fallujah have been anecdotal,
and have rarely been backed up by any population-based epidemiological evidence, it is difficult in
these cases to assess the validity of the various assertions.
"

"Finally, the results reported here do not throw any light upon the identity of the agent(s) causing the increased levels of illness and although we have drawn attention to the use of depleted uranium as one potential relevant exposure, there may be other possibilities and we see the current study as investigating the anecdotal evidence of increases in cancer and infant mortality in Fallujah."

The authors caution a lot more about making assumptions.  You can read them yourself here:  http://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/7/7/2828/pdf

There have been multiple scientific studies done on whether or not DU is safe and there is absolutely no consensus in the scientific community.

Mons Anus should stick to personally praying for soldiers to die in IED attacks. Fucking scumbag.

Haha just like there is no such thing as Gulf War Syndrome and all the soldiers that came back from Vietnam suffered no chronic life threatening injuries from agent Orange.  You're an idiot if you believe the "official" line on anything military related.  They were parroting the same bullshit back in Vietnam.

The issue is not the "official line", it's causality and the researchers are not DOD, nor was the study funded by the government.  In fact, they point out that DU may be, at least anecdotally, a cause.  However, you cannot assert causality from this study and the researchers make that clear.  Further study may paint a different picture.

This is why you are a gay male nurse and not a physician.

Mons,

Are you planning to move to Iraq...otherwise why the fuck do you care. Do u have any idea the environmental mess that this country is and has been for a long time. DU is the least of their problems. Who did the study and where was this published?

Atleast try to be original you fucking retard.  Causality?  Not funded by the government?  LMAO!  Don't try to act like you know what the fuck you're talking about.  That seems to be a trend with you.  Because you are clueless.  I don't' know if you work for the US military or what.  Why do you toe the official line every chance you get on just about every subject???.  You come off as a stooge incapable of  thinking for yourself.
Don't worry.......you can leave the thinking to those of us with the ability to.

This is a classic example of CT'ers retarding to ad hom.

Saying something "may" be the cause is far from saying something "is"

Don't try to act like YOU know what the fuck you're talking about. There have been multiple studies on this issue conducted by independent researchers and they have not reached anything close to a consensus.

Then post them.  I'm sure they are absolutely conclusive right?  Just like what you are stating about the above posted study?  Right?  They are absolutely definitive.  Get a job you fucking loser and quit spending all your time a forum where no one cares about what you say.
