Arianna Huffington: It’s time to start taking Palin seriously
Hot Air ^ | August 2, 2010 | Allahpundit

________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ___

Two possibilities. One: She’s trying to puff Palin up because, like the rest of the left, she’s eager to face her in 2012. Two: She’s nervous. Hmmmmm.

"We are awash in crises right now — crises that require smart and creative policy fixes. So why is somebody who so rarely deals in policy fixes so popular? It’s because Palin’s message operates on a level deeper than policy statements about the economy or financial reform or health care or the war in Afghanistan…

It’s not Palin’s positions people respond to — it’s her use of symbols. Mama grizzlies rearing up to protect their young? That’s straight out of Jung’s “collective unconscious” — the term Jung used to describe the part of the unconscious mind that, unlike the personal unconscious, is shared by all human beings, made up of archetypes, or, in Jung’s words, “universal images that have existed since the remotest times.” Unlike personal experiences, these archetypes are inherited, not acquired. They are “inborn forms… of perception and apprehension,” the “deposits of the constantly repeated experiences of humanity.”

This is the realm Palin is working in — I’m sure unintentionally — and it’s why she has connected so deeply with a large segment of the public. In fact, her evocation of mama grizzlies has a particularly resonant history in the collective unconscious. According to the Jungian Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism, “The bear has long fascinated mankind, partly because of its habit of hibernation, which may have served as a model of death and rebirth in human societies.”

Read her post for the rest.

Translation: Sure, Palin’s a doofus, but her ads are smart (which is true) and our media’s pretty doofus-y too, and with an electorate that’s too terrified to do the obviously right thing by voting liberal, anything’s possible. This is standard argumentation among hyperpartisans of all stripes — remember George Lakoff reassuring liberals that they lost elections because crafty conservatives were better at branding? — but you’ll see it in spades if/when Palin gains traction.

The point, as always, is to reassure fellow hyperpartisans that it’s not the opposition’s policies that voters find appealing but something (anything!) else, and since their contempt for Palin runs deeper than it does for the rest of the GOP field, the explanations for her success will have to be that much more creative. Hence the hyperventilating over Jungian magic or whatever that’s supposedly being practiced via what’s actually a painfully simple, even heavy-handed animal metaphor. You’re going to see a lot of this if she’s the nominee, and it’ll all run along the same lines: Palin’s practicing some sort of witchcraft or hypnosis or unleashing America’s “id,” etc etc, all geared towards insisting that her appeal is, and can only be, operating on a sub-cerebral level. That’s the goal here — to suggest that, because no thinking person could vote for her, this is all playing out somehow in America’s subconscious.

Credit to Arianna for framing it in terms of Jung, at least. Most of the lazier pieces you’ll see in this vein, and there’ll be many more, will stick with Freud.

Ha Ha - now the left is claiming Sarah is using Jedi mind tricks?

Damn the left is in meltdown.

Can someone tell me the Jedi mind tricks in this ad that the left is so afraid of?

As the saying goes, "Be careful what you wish for; you just MIGHT GET IT"

Imagine Palin and Obama, toe-to-toe, in a debate and the "Mama Grizzly" (I guess she's not a pitbull with lipstick, anymore  ;D ) mauls Mr. "Hope-and-Change" and emasculates him in front of the entire country.

I'm not convinced Obama is even running for a second term.

I would be more intrigued to see Palin run against Hillary. The pitbull with lipstick will get neutered in a minute.  ;D

Hillary would beat Palin if the race was today IMHO only because Hillary has gained a lot of cred in the last year as Sec. of State.

If it were palin v obama, palin could win if the economy is still in the tank 2 years from now by default.

I'm not convinced obama is running tbh.

obama wouldn't be able to go at palin too tough.  He'd be seen as bullying her.  I think since her approval among Independents is only 25%... she'd be a horrible choice for repubs to make... cause so many swing voters already believe she's not smart enough.  True or not... it's what they believe.  They don't have a 25% approval for Newt, Thune, or anyone else from the GOP.

Hilary?  Holy shit... she'd destroy palin.  She could go at her tough... she would look presidential and palin would look hillbilly.  hilary made obama look unprepared, and called him on it - she'd call palin on it too.  I can just hear her saying "look Miss Palin, that palm reading schtick is cute but you're just not presidential" and the race would be over... hilary wins 45 states.

And Hilary's approvals are higher than obama, congress, palin, and everyone else.  She's sitting pretty right now.

Palin is very good in debates.  Obama is not.  Hillary is o.k.

The prospects of Obama running for re-election versus Palin makes me want to blow my brains out with a bazooka. A choice between an idiot who knows shes an idiot against an idiot who can give good speeches and has a degree from Harvard.

I would take Hillary over both of them in a heartbeat.

Huffington ain't the only lefty that's scared of Palin. Here's a blurb from Chris "Thrill-up-my-leg" Matthews:

What kind of cockamamie analysis is that?  She might win the nomination because she is more "Christian" than the other candidates?  How stupid is that?   ::)

there are a block of voters who will vote for the candidate who believes in the most literal interpretation of the bible.  You know, the "humans and dinos walked together 5000 years ago" group.  The ones who think everything in the bible happened exactly as written, down to someone chilling in the belly of a whale for a year.

These people choose Palin, and she wins the nomination.

thanks, but it is true.

The 4 or 5 top canddiates will split the vote - and Palin will probably win.

She will get some "girl power" votes - remember her talking about 18 mil cracks inthe ceiling in her first speech in an attempt to win hilary supporters.

She will get the religious votes.

She will get many of the far-right

She sure won't get the educated vote (those doggone elites with their educations and whatnot), nor the financially concerned vote (they know she was spend-happy as governor and mayor).  She won't get many moderate repub votes (she's polling at 25% approval among independents).

But she probably will get enough votes, since Romney and huck and thune and friends will be splitting what's left, to win iowa and michigan.  And with the religious voters, SCarolina will be a breeze too.  That momentum will give her the win, fellahs.

Once again a lib mocking Christians and getting away with being a bigot. So when I say there is a block of voters where 70% of their kids are born out of wedlock and the vast majority of which is so incredibly lazy and stupid they think the government should pay their bills, those voters vote Obama.Im a racist. You insult an entire group of Americans as stupid and its fine.

Hahahaha!   :)  Right.  And Huckabee, the former pastor, trounced the Republican field in 2008.  Do you hear how absurd your comments sound?  Good grief.

If huck was a woman, he'd be president right now.

She has a unique combination of factors which will be unbeatable in the GOP primaries.

of course, obama will beat her in the general, since so many independent voters have already made up their mind about her.

but that seems to be okay with many repubs, who would rather play the victim card and cry for another 4 years because they voted with their 'junk' and not their brains.

Ummm, your predictions have been wrong so often that its amazing. You will be wrong here as usual.By the way, this is the talking points that Mathews used yesterday so on top of not being very well thought out its just a regurgatation of a dunce who is never ever right.

Lastly, independants have also made their minds up about Obama.THEY HATE HIM!and left him in droves.
