  USA TODAY/GALLUP POLL

How are things going for the United States in Afghanistan?

USA TODAY/Gallup Poll of 1,208 adults Tuesday - Sunday. Margin of error +/- 3 percentage points.

By Richard Wolf, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — Public support for President Obama's Afghanistan war policy has plummeted amid a rising U.S. death toll and the unauthorized release of classified military documents, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows.

Support for Obama's management of the war fell to 36%, down from 48% in a February poll. Now, a record 43% also say it was a mistake to go to war there after the terrorist attacks in 2001.

The decline in support contributed to the lowest approval ratings of Obama's presidency. Amid a lengthy recession, more Americans support his handling of the economy (39%) than the war.

Even Obama's handling of the war in Iraq received record-low approval, despite a drawdown of 90,000 troops and the planned, on-schedule end of U.S. combat operations there this month.

Only 41% of those surveyed Tuesday through Sunday approved of the way Obama is handling his job, his lowest rating in the USA TODAY/Gallup Poll since he took office in January 2009. In Gallup's separate daily tracking poll, his approval was at 45% Monday.

The waning support for the Afghanistan war coincides with the deaths of a record 66 U.S. servicemembers in July, up from 60 in June. As the last of 30,000 reinforcements ordered by Obama enter the country, the international military force is encountering heavy Taliban resistance in the southern provinces of Kandahar and Helmand.

"It's hard to find any positive news that would boost public opinion," says Richard Eichenberg of Tufts University, who studies presidential polling and foreign policy.

The drop in support also follows the online posting of more than 76,000 documents by WikiLeaks. Two-thirds of those polled said it was wrong for the website to publish the documents.

Obama said Monday that he'll stick to his war plan: training Afghans to provide their own security, then beginning to withdraw troops in July 2011. The poll showed most Americans agree: 57% want a timetable for removing troops, and two-thirds of those say withdrawal should be done gradually.

"We will continue to face huge challenges in Afghanistan," Obama told the Disabled American Veterans in Atlanta. "It's important that the American people know that we are making progress and we are focused on goals that are clear and achievable."

In a CBS interview that aired earlier Monday, Obama said, "If I didn't think that it was important for our national security to finish the job in Afghanistan, then I would pull them out today, because I have to sign letters to these families — families who have lost loved ones."

Obama's address in Georgia was focused on this month's end of U.S. combat operations in Iraq — a commitment Obama made early last year. A force of 50,000 U.S. servicemembers will stay to train Iraqi security forces, conduct counterterrorism missions and protect civilian operations.

"Make no mistake: Our commitment in Iraq is changing, from a military effort led by our troops to a civilian effort led by our diplomats," Obama said.

haha in that case, let's spin it...

Despite the horrible economic conditions and two long-term wars Obama has inherited, he's managed to turn things around quite admirably.  We WON in iraq thanks to the leadership of the military men whose gifts he utilized (if you argue this, you hate the military), and we're now ramping up things in Afghanistan to finally get Bin laden, something Bush admitted he didn't care about (if you argue this, youre with the terrorists and not America!)

Now, there will be times when 3 in 5 Americans might be swayed by information from the NUMBER ONE NAME IN NEWS, which has awesome ratings and therefore has a lot of viewers for their anti-american rhetoric.  Still, Obama is the bigger man - giving them the front and center seat in the White house press room.

Ya gotta admire that... the #1 name in news works tirelessly to destroy his goals for America - and he still gives them good seats.  In other countries, without our freedoms, those who oppose the president would be hanging from the gallows.  Obama treats them well because he knows they are children, and they do not understand his vision for America.

Political spin is so fascinating to me.  Both sides do it.  It's fun to watch.

Dem pollster says voters not buying Bush as boogeyman strategy (Dawning Realization)
Hotair ^ | 08/03/2010 | Ed Morrissey

If Democrats want to convince anyone not already firmly in their own camp to support their candidates, they need a better argument than BushBushBushBushBush. National Journal reports the results of a poll commissioned by a Democrat-leaning think tank that shows voters don’t consider today’s GOP as watercarriers for Barack Obama’s predecessor. Almost two-thirds of respondents see Republican control of Congress as, well, Hope and Change:

Dems have tried repeatedly to tie the GOP to Bush’s economic policies, which remain highly unpopular. But so far, that hasn’t worked, according to officials at the Dem-leaning Third Way think tank.

“Just eighteen months after President Bush left office with the nation’s economy in historic freefall, two-thirds of Americans now see congressional Republicans and their economic ideas as new and completely separate from those of the former president,” the group wrote in a strategy memo sent to Dem leaders last month.

A majority, 53%, of Americans still blame Pres. Bush for the country’s economic woes, while 26% pin the blame on Pres. Obama. Only 14% give Bush excellent or good ratings on handling the federal budget, and 28% say he helped the middle class, according to a survey from Benenson Strategy Group.

But just 25% of Americans say that the GOP’s return to power in Congress will mean a return to those unpopular Bush policies. Fully 65% believe a GOP Congress would promote “a new economic agenda that is different from George W. Bush’s policies.”

A thin fraction of independent voters (22%) and Dems (32%) believe the GOP is set to return to Bush’s agenda. That’s great news for GOPers, who seem headed for an electoral romp this year, and bad news for Dems, who see tying the GOP to Bush’s legacy as a surefire way of beating back the GOP onslaught.

Of course, Barack Obama has not quite caught up to the news:

Obama said that after losing control of Congress in 2006 and the White House in 2008, Republicans did not engage in new thinking but stuck to the same policies that led the United States into the worst recession since the Great Depression.

“It’s not like they engaged in some heavy reflection. They have not come up with a single, solitary new idea to address the challenges of the American people. They don’t have a single idea that is different from George Bush’s,” he said.

Republicans, he said, are betting that Americans had forgotten recent history.

Which recent history? The recent history of Obama’s promise to keep unemployment below 8% if Congress gave him $787 billion to spend? That recent history? Or the recent history showing that civilian participation in the workforce has hit a historic low under his leadership? How about the $2.2 trillion math error made by the Obama White House in calculating future deficits? The failure of the stimulus plan to sustain real growth instead of just creating gimmicky spikes in markets?

Obama wants voters to forget recent history, not remember it. Unfortunately, the Bush Boogeyman Boogie simply isn’t as effective as it was in 2008, before Obama won his election and had to start governing for himself. Not only has that failed to keep criticism from falling on his shoulders, it hasn’t kept almost two-thirds of voters from noticing that the GOP has become more free-market oriented since the retirement of the man who claimed to have violated those principles in order to save the free market.

Voters have seen four years of the Democratic agenda from Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, and two years of incompetence from Barack Obama. The real boogeymen in this cycle are all Democrats, and chanting BushBushBushBushBush just demonstrates how far out of touch Democratic leadership has become from the electorate.

That's why they lost in 2006 fool.

Face it, the country is not a hard left cabal like your boys over at DU think.  They thought Pelosi would drain the swamp and end the wars, etc.  Stupidly of course since pelosi herself is a pofs C$%^ who deserves the guillotine.

The taxpayers want less govt, not more, and the polls show it.

pelosi believes in a more socialist country.  She's made that clear.

If americans didn't want that, why did they give her the congressional majority?

For the same reason we have obama as president, voters are stupid.  most dems run as conservatives in thelast month before an election and thats when people are paying attention.

Obama is a perfect example of the moron voter.

There should be some sort of a test of general intelligence and understanding a person has to take and pass before being allowed to vote.

Don't see the Dems going for that tho....

I was just about to say that Gallup had Obama at 44%. However, RCP just updated their average, to include this most recent Gallup poll. He's been upside down in RCP for nearly two weeks. But, the margin is WIDENING; it's nearly 5 points, now (44.9 - Approve; 49.7 - Disapprove).

If he drops to the 30s by/before October, the Democrats could be heading to the woodshed, to get their blue behinds whipped RED.

I'll be surprised if he drops below 40.  There is that core group of Democrats who will follow him over a cliff.  I think the key stats involve independents.
