What is the best free antivirus around for PC?

so my norton is going to expire very soon and I dont feel like wasting bucks for that anymore, which one is the best free antivirus? avira?

 I agree. Best there is to offer for free. Hell, it beats a lot of the shit you have to actually pay for. As for slowing the comp down, I never had that experience.

Maybe its just me but with AVG it scans EVERYTHING. PDF, website, programs etc. too safe for me.

I'm an AVG guy, but hear good things about Avast. I don't experience sluggishness unless it's doing a scheduled full drive scan.
