I think there are two trains of thought on this:
1. do them first, when you are fresh. this way you will hopefully have better form and technique thereby preventing injury. and you can use more weight
2. do them later, when your back is "pre-exhausted' (fucking lame word). this way you can use less weight and still get a good workout. again less weight = less injury (hopefully)
me, i do them first

I do them at the end, simply because I prefer to prioritise my upper back more, which is a weaker bodypart for me.

Usually the beginning so I can focus more on proper form. The end I find myself cheating a lot more which will take just one slip up to knock me out for a while.

I always did dead at the start of a back workout until recently. I am currently doing pulldowns first then deads, not much drop in strength.

Deads always first or second...90% of the time I put them first, im at my strongest and can concentrate on my form while shunting a heavier weight...makes more sense to me. If they're second its normally after lat pull-down.

Recently switched to performing them at he end of the workout - following the Yates routines, or pretty close, as they have always worked for me...been doing them full ROM though.
My strength dropped considerably from 6 plates a side for 3-6 doing them first, to 3/4 plates a side for 8 at the end. Got to say my form is near picture perfect and I'm really controlling the negative since following my new routine. Working back up though, with good results too.

Deadlifts take a lot out of me so I get in first. Sometimes on a good day that might be my main concentration.

Rack pulls? Yes, from just below the knee and sometimes from mid shin.

I mix it up. Sometime first, sometime middle, and sometime last. We call it deadlift dead last.

I prefer to do them on squat days that way I limit excessive lower back use and as the lower back is more a 24/7 stability muscle system rather than an occasional super power system I still want to be able to function ok the rest of the 24/7

LOL During one of my sessions last week I clocked these two guys doing squats on a smith machine right after deadlifting (weird because hardly anyone does compounds in my gym) On the smithie they was lifting less of what I was on the squat rack opposite them One of them started doing high reps with little rest between sets, burnt himself out, got pale as a ghost and had to go sit down at the office by hte entrance
