Start new topicI've been thinning since I was 18. Started on small chunks of proscar (1/4 of a pill) pretty early, then I got lazy with it for good while and used dermmatch to cover up thinning areas. I still use dermmatch but my hair is now thinning to the point where it sometimes just looks like black paint in certain areas. I have great density in other areas but I'm slowly developing the Alan Shearer look.

Anyway I've started on propecia again and I think I'm going through some shedding now, now my hair looks like this






I stopped propecia for a while but now I'm on it again and have been taking it consistently for over 6 months. I do have faith that it will stop further loss. I see alot of people saying it is too early at my age, but isn't it now that I care the most? :dunno:

Astros: Yes that was me, I still look pretty good with dermmatch but it is a bit thinner and the hairline has gone a bit up too. I think it's because of my inconsistency with propecia and maybe the fact that I was depressed after a breakup and family members death for a while. But I believe it is mostly because of the propecia.

There's also a money issue, will I have to go to Armani, H&W...to get a good HT? I'm also worried about some people that get a low yield, why is that? Yeah I can rock the short buzz or shorter look, my headshape is ok. But that would be very boring for me, as I was notorious for my new hairstyles before I started thinning.

Reason why I never tried Toppik is because I'm afraid that if a girl runs her hands through my hair she'll notice. Also heard Toppik sucks in rain or when you're sweating. Dermmatch even stays on when I swim. To get it off I have to use shampoo.

I did some research on finasteride and decided against taking it.  There's enough talk about ED (limp dick) sides and some claims that ED continues even after you stop taking the drug.    I'd rather be bald and hard.  There's a forum dedicated to finasteride sides and it's big.

Also looked into rogaine but found (if I remember correctly) that while it can be topically applied (or taken as a pill) its effects are systemic.  Seemed to me that healthy follicles in areas where you don't want hair are more likely to thrive under its influence than half dead ones on the scalp.

Laser treatment looked like a useless & expensive gimmick without any conclusive evidence backing it up.  Transplant isn't something I care enough about hair loss to do but the major drawback I read about is that you will continue to bald after transplant, meaning that while you might look ok immediately after the HT, you will look progressively weirder as your natural hair recedes from the HT, so essentially you are up for repeated HTs throughout your life.  If you're considering it, research how convincing a job they do too, as well as mishaps, risk of scarring, etc.  A bad or botched HT would be horrible to live with, X.

Fwiw, finasteride only inhibits the 5 alpha reductase enzyme (oooo tech talk!) but not the secondary T to DHT pathway.  Dutasteride takes care of both the alpha and beta conversion paths... although it's also something I decided not to take for the same reason as finasteride.  Saw Palmetto is said to inhibit both a & b paths but a large German study found no difference in (I think) DHT levels between those taking SP and those not (study related to prostate growth, not balding).  I didn't read it, was just told about it.
