those douchebags (meter maids) gave me a parking ticket yesterday for 40 bucks.  parking too close to a damn stop sign.  i was 10 feet away, apparently i had to be 15 feet away.  douches.

anyway, i was all pist off and about to pay it online, but I noticed they messed up a number in my license plate.  instead of the last number being a 3, they put it as a 2.  you all think i am off the hook on this one?  i mean, its not my license plate number on it.

anyone work in this area, that may know?  hate to not pay, and have it be 160 bucks in a few months.

Pay it!  You are not off the hook.  The unpaid ticket will attract fines and you will be on the hook for those as well.  You can't fight and win this one; it's not worth trying.  A few months ago I got my first speeding ticket in years.  Yes, I was speeding (late for an appointment).  Yes, I got caught.  A few hundred bucks down the drain.  :'(

I've gotten so many damn parking tickets here in DC I can wipe my ass with them for weeks!

Pay it get it out of the way, think of it as paying for parking in a garage!

I have used that same deficiency in a ticket to successfully have one dismissed in NYC.

You need to take whatever steps are outlined on the ticket to claim that it was an inappropriate ticket.  DO NOT IGNORE IT.  Things might not work out in your favor, but it might be worth a shot.

It's $40 and presumably no points or effect on insurance cost.  How much of your time is it really worth spending fighting it?

Even if the date is off the ticket is NOT valid.  Ignore it.  But, you better be sure it is not the right number.  Same thing with any moving violation.  If just one thign is wrong on the ticket it will get dismissed.

Imo you'd get far more satisfaction from paying the $40 and then filing a complaint against the meter maid for gross incompetence as well as demanding a letter of explanation detailing exactly what steps will be taken to ensure that honest taxpayers such as yourself aren't saddled with the responsibility of putting right mistakes made by dunderheaded city employees who should have been shunted off to work at the Post Office after a quick glance at page one of their civil service exam.

Naturally, you'll include an invoice to compensate you for your lost time in bringing their attention to this matter in the amount of: $40.

Yes, that you can win.  But one wrong digit for a parking ticket?  No dice.

Doesn't seem right that the guy with the 2 at the end of his plate number has to pay your parking fine.  He wasn't dumb enough to park within 10' of a stop sign.

Exactly. Lets not forget, you were the one in the wrong...you got caught and now you are trying to find out a way to get out of it. Pay the stupid ticket and be accountable for your actions.....

Usually VIN's aren't documented...  BUT very possible his copy has the right plate number.  Even if it is just one digit they could possibly trace it if they want!

Its 40 bucks just pay it, sucks but you dont want to get a fee for late payment.

no vin number on the ticket.

the ticket is computer generated, so i don't think they have the correct number in their file either.

wonder if the device takes a pic of the liscence though?  fuck it, i'll just pay it.

these rat bastards though.  i got a ticket from one of those camaras stating I ran a red light.  I saw the vid, and what happened was I made a right at a red light, but instead of coming to a complete stop I slowed down, hit 3mph, then made the right.   fucking 180 dollars.   it was 7 am on a saturday and i was the only car on the street.

Really why is that.  There is no name or address of the owner.  All they have is the license plate.  If it is one digit off how do they find you.  Do you think they will guess.  I thought you were smarter than that.  In addition, if he went to court and fought it and pointed out the mistake, the judge would dismiss it.  believe me I know.

That is incorrect.  When they really want to, they can trace the vehicle back to you based on relatively little information such as make, model, color, and three digits from your license plate.  Remember, all of this information is held in a database that can be searched with a simple keystroke.  Searching the database does not require an exact match, the same way searches on google or yahoo do not have to be spelled correctly.  A search for delinquent ticketed vehicles can allow for one two or even three wrong digits.

I’m all for getting out of tickets, but as described by the OP I would pay it.  They can certainly trace it back to him if they are inclined to do so, and by then the fine will have doubled or tripled!
