i though that's what we were aiming towards eventually, hence the spacestation. he's right of course, civilised man has always expanded and colonised. the time will come when the little green men will fear us.

The human race must look to outer space within the next century or it will become extinct, Professor Stephen Hawking has warned.

The renowned astrophysicist said he fears mankind is in great danger and its future "must be in space" if it is to survive.

In an interview he said threats to the existence of the human race such as war, resource depletion and overpopulation meant it was at its greater risk ever.

Although a long advocate of colonising space in order to continue man's reign, this is his direst warning to date.

"It will be difficult enough to avoid disaster in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand or million," he told the website Big Think.

"Our only chance of long-term survival is not to remain inward looking on planet Earth but to spread out into space.

"We have made remarkable progress in the last hundred years. But if we want to continue beyond the next hundred years, our future is in space.

"That is why I'm in favour of manned, or should I say 'personed', space flight."

Earlier this year Professor Hawking warned that exploring space may not be entirely without risk.

In a series for the Discovery Channel, he said humans should be wary about making contact with alien life forms as they may not be friendly.

But he said as long as we remained the only intelligent life in our galaxy and avoided destroying ourselves we should be safe.

"I see great dangers for the human race," Hawking said. "There have been a number of times in the past when its survival has been a question of touch and go. The Cuban missile crisis in 1963 was one of these. The frequency of such occasions is likely to increase in the future."

"But I'm an optimist. If we can avoid disaster for the next two centuries, our species should be safe, as we spread into space," he said.

Getting to another planet will prove a challenge, not to mention colonising it for humanity.

Katherine Freese, a University of Michigan astrophysicist, told Big Think that "the nearest star [to Earth] is Proxima Centauri which is 4.2 light years away.

That means that, if you were travelling at the speed of light the whole time, it would take 4.2 years to get there" – or about 50,000 years using current rocket science.

i read "..must look to outer space..."

not "must move to outer space.." as in your title.

its (moving) not going to happen in the next century thats for sure....other than experimental groups.

As I was watching GI Joe the other night and when they got to Cobra's underwater base, one realizes that we haven't fully explored our own world yet. We, don't have  vehicles, be they fighters or personalized, that
can travel underwater rapidly. We neither have under water bases. We also are still uses internal combustion engines to move us around on land, and using wheels as well. We've yet to master magnetic levitation for transportation. And we are still discovering new species to this day.

And to "top" it all off, we found it very difficult to top off a that oil well, which was 5,000 feet deep.

Yeah, we really need to expand out into space. I bet those lil greys are laughing at us right now, our greed, our inssistance to engage in conflict all the time. We simply haven't evolved to the point where we need to focus on space...

Hawking is right with what he says but all he's done is telling us the problem, not really offering any solutions.

I can't see this "moving to space" thing happening in the next hundred years or so somehow - we're not even planning another trip to the moon in the near future and a manned mission to Mars is still 20 years off at least. Colonising elsewhere is a joke - where are we going to go? Earth sustains mankind - nowhere else will without artificial means - it'll be too costly and incredibly impractical. I can't see it happening somehow - mankind will die out before we have the technology to travel to other solar systems - we are killing ourselves faster than any other species anyway so it's only a matter of time before the human race is over.

while you have good points- im not so sure about us dying out before we have the technology to go elsewhere. at some point we'll discover the secret to gravity and learn how to bend space/time so will be able to move massive distances in short times.

remember it was only 107 years ago that we discovered how to fly...and less than 50 years later we were in orbit..and only 250 years since we discovered electricity.

in 500 years i'd be surprised if we didnt all have hoverboards.

what? the cuban missile crisis was not serious?

It for sure was dead serious.

It was only matter of minutes to America be destroyed by soviets.

This forum wouldn't exist if crisis had escalated  :)

i could have said what he said. Fact is 99,9999999% of the world population is uselss and only less than 0,00000001% really change, improve, and lead mankind as a whole. Why does he care about all these people who wouldnt give him the time of the day if they saw him in his weelchair with his retarded look . We re animals, of course we re going to kill each others and even alien species if we can, because it's how the whole fucking universe works and its not going to change. The utopian, pacifist bullcrap is really annoying, especially from someone supposed to be as smart as he is. The animal, the beast, is opportunistic, our human intelligence is just an extension of what animals have, and it serves the same purpose at the end of the day and will always be: the strongest, or smartest, will use all his skills to survive and if it means killing others, then , fuck it, who cares, me before the others. Kill, or be killed. No time to waste with that pacifist crap. Like the world elites give a fuck about the people below em. It's always been that way. It'S what hapening between spermatozoids fighting each others for the egg, there's always a selection to be made, and you re either good and kept, or bad and forgotten. Mankind will never spread, a very small portion of it, the smartest and strongest will. If there s ever a meteorite crash on earth every elites in the world will go int heir little bunker while the rest of mankind will just disappear. That's natural selection, law of nature, law of the universe.

People think sex is what drives us.... but the truth is... if you could;

1. have sex with the best looking jailbait girl forever or

2. eat food and drink water and surf in the internet

You would lie to yourself if you chose 1... because you will get desperate with the lack of food and water that you would probably eat her, literally. Then you wished you took the second option.

What is terrible is that we have ego/pride and useless feelings to make all tese very simple stuff complicated... VERY FUCKING complicated! That's why I turned to luciferian, I constantly try to battle against my true nature, not give a shit about others, only my self and be a "god" my self.

exactly. The real biggest visionary was actually philip k dick with his depiction of the world in blade runner. He just took verything and worsened it and boom voila, you got the world of tomorow. Threw in some sci fi (flying cars) and that's it. He was right about robots, genetic manipulation, implants , asians  and dumb huge advertisments everywehere, the ever- cloudy poluted sky , gigantic cities full of fucked up people struggling to find a meaning to their existence, a new "multicultural dumbed down population" with no roots, and the elites  who own the mega corporations living on top of pyramid shaped buildings...

btw the 5th element was only a fucking rip off of blade runner from a to z.

Also hanwkins didnt predict people would get dumber and dumber as a result of the spreading of weatlh and comfort for everyone. This is, to me, the real threat : people are getting dumber and dumber by the day and they re not even aware of it, while the elites keep staying away from the masses.
