Florida is fun!  Great beaches and boating (if you are into that) and low cost of living.  Unfortunately, the schools in FL are not very good . . . as compared to New England for example.  Getting a degree in FL often means staying in FL for your career—which is fine if that is what you plan to do.

My vacation/retirement home is in FL.

I lived in Sarasota right off Siesta Key for almost 2 years... it's beautiful.

I spent last weekend in the FL Keys (Islamorada)... it was even better.

I have vacationed in Orlando quite a few times, it's nice.

The everglades might be my favorite spot - just miles of swamp and lots of critters.

I've lived in a few cities here, been to others.  Just like anywhere else, the bigger cities (and the smaller ones too) can be pretty ghetto.  But the outlying areas as nice.  Really depends where you are in Orlando and what you like to do.

i dont know key west... the wifey went there a few years back and from the pics, it was a little trashy... mighta just been where she went tho, I dunno.

The keys are the islands that stretch from miami/homestead down to key west.  I stayed at islamorada, kinda in the middle.  It was beautiful, way nicer than siesta key, where I used to go every weekend.

hurricanes - take 75 north but you're not on coast like palm coast or in a soup bowl like south la.

ph.d. engineering sciences?

i have family from miami - tampa, passed on position in Pensacola because of coastal problem and evacuation.

to other user it's like SA/CA in some areas where you would see rich n poor lot - lot.  nothing new for non-north americans
