new Gallup poll... Republican 10% lead gone??
« on: September 07, 2010, 07:02:05 PM »

PRINCETON, NJ -- Republicans and Democrats are tied at 46% among registered voters in Gallup's weekly tracking of congressional voting preferences, marking a shift after five consecutive weeks in which the Republicans held the advantage.

These results are based on aggregated data from more than 1,650 registered voters surveyed Aug. 30-Sept. 5 as part of Gallup Daily tracking. The results reflect more competitive voting intentions than has been the case recently. Republicans' leads over Democrats among registered voters in three of the previous four weeks were the highest Gallup has measured for this midterm election campaign, and higher than any GOP advantage Gallup has measured in a midterm election year since 1942.

Last week marked the return of President Barack Obama from his 10-day vacation, and included his national address to announce the official end of combat operations in Iraq. The president's three-day job approval rating rose to 47% for Aug. 29-31 -- a level it had reached only once since mid-July. Last week also brought media commentary in the aftermath of conservative talk-show host Glenn Beck's massive rally in Washington, D.C. It is not clear if these or other factors affected Americans' voting preferences as measured by the generic ballot.

Whether the 2010 race has shifted more permanently to a more competitive positioning will be apparent in the coming weeks. Nevertheless, even the current tie in the generic ballot among registered voters points to a better year for Republicans than for Democrats, given the GOP's usual advantage in voter turnout in midterm elections.

Rasmussen has GOP up 12; ABC/Washington Post has them up 13. The RCP average is over 6 points.

GOP is going to do well this fall, no doubt.

however, they gotta be careful with "We can run Palin, Ven der sloot, or Big Bird and win the White House in 2012!" talk.

They'll end up settling for a shitty ticket (See: 96, 08) and they'll giftwrap another 4 years of Obama in this white house.    Remember... the same people singing "one term baby!" are the same ones who had a cool song called "Healthcare is dead baby!" which they're not singing anymore...

You gotta be kidding me. What, now mentioning Palin's name who BTW it looks more and more that she will be a viable Republican candidate should all of a sudden be taboo???  ::)

Registered voters and likely voters are not the same thing.

Go to RCP and you will see the most realistic numbers.

While that might be true you can't ignore those numbers when they look better for one side (democrats right now ) and on the other hand totally brag about them when they give your favorite side a 10 point advantage. Am I right?  :)

They are simply bogus and not remotely in line with anything else.  Registered voters is not reliable for midterms as much as likely voters are.

Gallup polls are bogus? Were they bogus when they showed a 10% Republican lead? All I'm saying is that things change fast in politics.....you can't predict with certainty what will happen 2 months from now on and while the Republicans look like they will gain a number of seats it can't be predicted how many .....maybe they'll take the House maybe they wont. We simply don't know.

I said using the metric of "registered voters" for mid terms is not reliable.

I guess all the dozens upon dozens of articles, polls and acknowledged fear among Democrats about their prospects in the elections has been negated by this one poll.  ::)

Absolutely not. If you would read my post carefully you would see that I never said anything like that. It is simply an interesting observation that a poll that gave such a large lead to Republicans a week ago or so finds new more even data on a subsequent poll.

This poll is nonsense. Most of the Democratic Party leadeship acknowledge that they will lose the House and that there is a chance, albeit a small chance, that they will lose the Senate.

Study: Democratic turnout for primaries lowest in 80 years

For the first time since 1930, more Republican voters showed up to vote in statewide primaries this year than Democrats -- another sign of the huge challenges facing President Obama's party in this year's elections.

The new figures come from a just-released report by voter turnout expert Curtis Gans of American University.

Gans looked at 35 primaries held before Sept. 1 and found that 4 million more Republicans voted than Democrats -- statistical proof of the "enthusiasm gap" that pollsters and pundits have been talking about.

That, combined with the fact that the percentage of voters who identify themselves as Democrats has been on a steady decline for decades, spells big trouble for the president's party, Gans said: "The Democrats are at an enormous disadvantage."

This comes after the 2008 election, when all the energy was on the Democratic side. But Gans said he's seen those kinds of turnaround in voter sentiment before. The last time was between the 1992 election when Bill Clinton won the White House and the midterm contests two years later that booted Democrats from power on Capitol Hill.

"This is precisely the kind of disillusion that brought the Democrats down in 1994," Gans said. He blamed the faltering economy for the latest numbers. "What the last 16 months have done is rob the public of the hope that was engendered in 2008," he said.

just giving her that nickname assigns some sort of cred to her that she's qualified for the job.

repubs shuld be RUNNING from any mention of her, not embracing her silly self-appointed nickname.

I guess they'll find some way to blame the 'lamestream media' for a 2012 obama win - instead of blaming themselves (as they should have in 2012) for just plain putting 2 dumbasses on the ticket...

At the rate obama is going, I think he might resign and let Hillary run in 2012.

And exactly where is this checklist for presidental qualifications that Palin doesn't meet, again?

The man that's supposedly qualified for the job now looks like a bumbling fool. And, he's the one with the Harvard degree and all. If you think that Obama will get re-elected (despite bleeding jobs, sucking up to our enemies, suing our citizens, siding with illegal aliens, and crying like a PUNK when his bone-headed policies don't work) just for the sake of keeping Palin (should she actually run and get the GOP nod), may I suggest you check into rehab.
