Opinions on bench shirts?
« on: September 08, 2010, 09:58:07 AM »
I think that the spaceage straight jackets used to bench with now are silly and absurd.
The best raw benchers do a tad over 700 lbs and with a triple ply straight jacket they do 900-1000.
They do aprox 1/3 more wt on avg with a top level shirt.
What's next? Put a heavy duty shock absorber on a guys  chest and try to bounce a semi truck off him before we crush him? ::)

Retarded. How much of a sense of accomplishment would you have knowing that 200-300lbs of your lift is due to the rubber wrapped around your fat ass?  ??? ???

they should ban them, but some guy wrote an article about wraps in the early 70's wrap up or shut up. that would probably be the opinion of powerlifters now. now it would be shirt up or shut up.

They bring sponsorer $'s to powerlifing.  Since there is much less $ in powerlifting than there is in bodybuilding, they aren't going anywhere like them or not.  Personally, I don't like them but they have many raw divisions now so raw is becomming more popular.

If someone who's maxed out, has a high poundage raw and wants an additional thrill than I can understand it.
Otherwise it sucks.

I used to wear shirts/suits for years before i realized what a waste they were.

I know my wrists are wrecked from years of insanely heavy board presses and band lockouts with a tight shirt on. A good single ply shirt can add a couple hundred pounds to your raw max when worn correctly.

I would rather lift raw these days, i don't even use wrist wraps anymore.

The best raw benchers are pressing a tad over 700?Who is doing that?I count two guys,Mendelson and Henderson.

Shirts are here to stay. They have been in the sporet for twenty five years and are going to remain in the sport. If they are so easy to use,put one on,break all the records.

So you're saying the record shouldn't be much higher than 700 rather than a ridiculous 2 inch ROM 1000+  ???

Are shirts legal? Are they part of the sport?

I find it funny that guys who cant bench shit with or without a shirt comment on them.Like I said, put one on,break all the records.Nothing more amusing then seeing bodybuilders talking about bench shirts .I guess synthol,t-3,growth hormone, site injections, fake color, all of that is legit and real. Its bench shirts that are fake.Ha,ha,ha,most here could put on a tripple denim shirt and couldnt bench 400.

The fact is,those who knock them have NEVER used them. Here is a bet.ANYONE on here who can bench over 300[probably a very very few saddly]with no shirt, put one on,film yourself attempting 500.Lets see how you make out.I mean its so easy that you get an automatic 200-300lbs out of wearing one,put one on and prove it.Here is my bet.95% of you will scalp yourselves, the other 5% wont be able to unrack the extra weight.

I'm sure there is a learning curve required.....but that doesn't make them any less stupid

Yes,however,I benched 515 without a shirt in a meet,in a shirt I bench 605.The idea that anyone can put one on and get these magical pounds out of them is silly. The guys that know how to use them are incredibly strong.Im friends with Jason Coker who holds the all time record at 220 with a 900lb bench.I challenge any 220 guy on here to simply unrack 900 and hold it for 10 secods. The guys that are hitting huge numbers with a shirt are strong as hell.Ive been trying to get big numbers out of a shirt for 15 years and I get next to nothing out of them. These guys are no joke.

Why bench shirts are seen as stupid but wrist wraps or knee wraps are not is beyond me.All of these items are used for one reason,to lift bigger weights.

Great for equipped lifting, turd for raw lifting.

Really though I have used them a few times before - not used them enough to have a valid opinion.
