Lindsay Lohan has failed a drug test in her criminal case ... TMZ has learned.

We're told the court-mandated drug test in question occurred last week.  According to the terms of Lindsay's probation, she will get 30 days in jail for a positive drug test.

One source connected with Lindsay tells TMZ ... "People with addiction problems don't get better magically, and she's really been making an effort to make herself better."

And D.A. spokesperson Sandi Gibbons tells TMZ her office has not been "officially notified" of the test results and no court date has been set yet.

UPDATE:  Sources close to Lindsay tell us she is saying it's not true -- insisting she has not failed, but we have confirmed it is indeed true.
I like the vid of her crying in court when the judge put the hammer down. And her attorney was telling her to keep quiet.

OMG can you believe this!!  She was on her way back to the top of Hollywood, this is so terrible.  Maybe she should stop drugs and get on with her life.

The 24-year-old actress’ legal troubles are reportedly far from over - TMZ reports that Lindsay failed a drug test last week.

“According to the terms of Lindsay’s probation, she will get 30 days in jail for a positive drug test,” TMZ notes, adding that the drug Lindsay tested positive for was cocaine.

hahah my good friend used to do X and coke all the time and get probation tests and pass them.. but he knew the tricks to beating them... obviously this bitch dont care at all.. not even taking the time to study on how to beat the tests while doing drugs..

I knew of a Probation agent who came upon a dude trying to doctor his urine, this is how it went:

Probation Agent: "What is that in your hand?"

Criminal: "Juice."

Probation Agent: "Juice?"

Criminal: "Yes, juice..."

Probation Agent: "What were you doing to it?"

Criminal: "Mixing it up..."

Probation Agent: "Well, drink it..."
