It's no different than on the east coast where we've got Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Colombians, Cubans, Peruvians, etc. Basically, first and foremost
non-his panic individuals are likely to just call you PUERTO RICAN, regardless of what your history is, because they are the dominant group when you are talking Hispanics from D.C. to Boston. I think most from all these groups label themselves "Spanish" to outsiders is because the language unites them and creates a unified cultural experience. Whether your parents came from El Salvador or Puerto Rico, here in the U.S. you are all watching the same spanish television networks and radio stations...all speaking SPANISH. It just becomes easier to say "I'm Spanish" than to go into a history of your personal ethnic roots every time a question is asked.
