Obama: Democratic voter apathy 'inexcusable'

(AP) President Barack Obama speaks in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Monday, Sept. 27,...

WASHINGTON (AP) - Admonishing his own party, President Barack Obama says it would be "inexcusable" and "irresponsible" for unenthusiastic Democratic voters to sit out the midterm elections, warning that the consequences could be a squandered agenda for years.

"People need to shake off this lethargy. People need to buck up," Obama told Rolling Stone in an interview to be published Friday. The president told Democrats that making change happen is hard and "if people now want to take their ball and go home, that tells me folks weren't serious in the first place."

The midterm elections are in five weeks and polling shows that Republicans, out of power at the White House and on Capitol Hill, have a much more excited base of supporters than Democrats. Obama, campaigning this week in four states, is in a sprint to restore the voter passion that helped him win office.

Yet in his attempt to light a fire under supporters, Obama comes across as fired up himself about how many backers fail to acknowledge the progress he sees. He said the glass-half-empty view among many progressive voters can be a debilitating force that distracts them from the real worry: Republicans.

The GOP is poised to win seats in the House, if not control of the chamber, and gain ground in the Senate, too.

"It is inexcusable for any Democrat or progressive right now to stand on the sidelines in this midterm election," Obama said.

The president has been telling Democrats to "wake up" and recognize that he and the Democratic-run Congress have delivered on promises, from a new health care law to tougher rules for Wall Street to more aid for college students. Obama wants disenchanted supporters to see that Republican wins in November would undermine the ability of Democrats to get the unfinished business done, from climate change legislation to allowing gays to serve openly in the military.

What emerges in the magazine story is a stern, lecturing tone from Obama.

It comes mainly at the end of the interview. Obama had wrapped the lengthy Q-and-A session, according to the magazine, but then returned unprompted to make one more impassioned point and unleash on the enthusiasm gap. He portrayed a clear choice between an administration that despite some warts has helped advance its agenda, and a Republican Party that would offer disastrous policies for the economy and civil liberties.

"The idea that we've got a lack of enthusiasm in the Democratic base, that people are sitting on their hands complaining, is just irresponsible," he said in the interview. He said Democrats should be thinking about what's at stake this election "if they want to move forward over the next two years or six years or 10 years."

The Rolling Stone interview was conducted Sept. 17. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the story, titled "Obama Fights Back."

Obama expresses plenty of disappointment over how Republicans made a tactical decision from the start to oppose him, but also offers some "grudging admiration" for its political effectiveness in keeping the GOP united. He said the resulting slog between Republicans and himself - legislative delays and political fighting reminiscent of the Washington he ran against - has worsened public skepticism of government and eroded the feeling of hope that surrounded his election.

The president said he keeps a checklist of his campaign promises and that he has met, by his account, about 70 percent of them.

As for the rest: "Well, that's what the next two years is for, or maybe the next six."

Obama would need to win re-election in 2012 for that latter timeframe to occur.

The president has kept 70% of his promises.Unfortunately for us,his main promise is the destruction of the United States.

People don't want to vote because they don't see a point.  Either way there will be no tangible change or benefit to them regardless of who wins.  All this does is abort the Obama experiment earlier than expected.

Seriously - blaming the consumer and customer never works.  Its like a chef who owns a resturant blaming the public for not showing up.    Hey buddy:  maybe people don't like food!

Can you imagine if Bush had said something like this in September of 2006? Im telling you, this guy will not win re-election. He does not have the tact necessary to do so. He will not pivot to the center like Bill Clinton did post 1994. Its just not in him.

Left-wing groups plan giant rally on Mall; will 're-commit to change'
Examiner ^ | September 28, 2010 | Byron York

Posted on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 2:07:59 PM by La Lydia

Stung by political setbacks and scrambling to avoid a repudiation of Democrats at the polls this November, a coalition of labor unions and liberal activist organizations is planning what it calls "the biggest progressive demonstration in decades" at the Lincoln Memorial next Saturday, October 2. The march, called "One Nation Working Together," is sponsored by the AFL-CIO, the NAACP, the Service Employees International Union, La Raza, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the American Federation of Teachers, the Rainbow Push Coalition, the Campaign for America's Future, and several other activist groups. The event is also being promoted by Organizing for America, the permanent wing of the Obama presidential campaign, which is sending out email notices to members asking that they travel to Washington to take part.

"Hundreds of thousands of people from across America will gather at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. to demonstrate our re-commitment to change," organizers say. "The One Nation march will feature human and civil rights leaders, labor leaders, environmental and peace activists, faith leaders, celebrities and sports figures…"

In addition to the main organizers, participants will also include left-wing fringe groups like International ANSWER, Code Pink, and the Communist Party USA. The leaders of those groups are known for loud, confrontational demonstrations, which virtually assures that anyone looking for extremist elements in the One Nation gathering will be able to find them.

The goal of "recommitment to change" suggests that liberal leaders are fully aware they have lost momentum in the 20 months of the Obama administration. AFL-CIO chief Richard Trumka says One Nation will "demand a renewed focus and investment in people." Benjamin Jealous, head of the NAACP, says the march will show that "this nation will rise again toward the mountaintop." Renewed focus and rise again are not phrases that such organizations use when they are winning.

Attendance at the march will likely be viewed as a test of liberal organizing strength at a time when polls show Democratic base voters are far less enthusiastic about the upcoming election than their Republican counterparts. In particular, it seems likely the press will compare turnout to that of the "Restoring Honor" rally staged by Fox News personality Glenn Beck at the Lincoln Memorial August 28. (The One Nation march was already in the planning stages when the Beck march was held.) The comparisons will, however, have to take into account two significant differences. First, the Beck rally was essentially the work of one person, albeit one with a big megaphone in talk radio and cable news; the One Nation rally will be the product of the combined organizing power of the country's largest unions. And second, while the Beck rally was self-consciously non-political, the One Nation gathering will be frankly partisan. "It's time to stand up and march for the change we voted for," say organizers.

The fact of the matter is that they are less enthusiastic because deep down they are questioning thier politics and thier ideology. Very few of them will admit it, but you can bet this is definately true of the young voters. Also, liberal people have childish, utopian, and unrealistic expectations in political leaders. THey think they are the equivalent of the tooth fairy. So ofcourse they are going to be disappointed when we are still stuck at 10% unemployment for over a year. They expected Obama to wave a magic wand and plug the BP oil well, and to wave a magic wand and reduce the unemployment rate to 4% over night. But even realistic people have a right to expect the unemployment rate to not stay stuck at 10% for a year. So ofcourse these liberals are disheartened and staying home.

What gets me is that people are not awake to the fact that EVERYTHING they are doing is intentionally making this drastically worse.

How people don't see this is ridiculous.

I was over at that site earlier, particularly watching them lament about Linda McMahon's gaining on Richard Blumenthal.

Boy, these guys are just goofy-personified, to say nothing of being in denial.

Of course!! You've probably seen some of mine.

But, look at these pathetic goofies. They just don't see the proverbial writing on the wall.

Some folks just have to learn the hard way. Let them continue, as scheduled, to the woodshed.

Politicians suck, They all suck, regardless of who they are. Apathy is the only right solution since voting automatically guarantees you voting for crap or as I like to say various piles of shit, some smelling (very) slightly better than others.

Hardly!! Apathy guarantees that the worst of the bunch gets the inside track to Washington. I used to think that my vote didn't matter. Then I voted in 2000....enough said. I'd like to think that my vote was one of the 537 that kept that goof Al Gore out of the Oval Office.

Blind obedience to "party line" and dogmatic support of people and ideologies just because they belong to a certain party are both inexcusable and asinine.

Apathy entails that someone who doesn't vote shouldn't really complain about policies he does not agree with. If a person wants certain policies to apply (or not), voting is probably the only, very indirect, way to actually do something about it. So it's either voting in massive numbers or "voting" with massive amounts of cash..

They are both liars, frauds and thieves...I see no difference between them, except that Bush is waves dumber than Gore.

I don't get you; you really think republicans represent a different side of the coin when in reality both sides are tarnished and rusting.

I'll tell you what - just speaking from anectodal evidence - my business and the economy always seems to do better when the repubs are in charge of at least one branch of govt.

Yes they are corrupt - but they dont scare businesses from expanding and doing business with others.

No. Bush is atleast as smart as Gore. Why do you think that mispronouncing nuclear makes you dumb? Personaly, I consider that very dumb. Bush never said any of the foolish crap that Obama has said.

And in spite of the Republican Party's flaws, they ARE a lot better than Democrats. Anyone who doenst see that has thier head in thier ass. The debt is much LARGER with Demcrats in charge now. The economy is a lot worse.
