I took it to mean, "which square is comparatively darker - exactly as depicted in the picture, resulting from all factors under which they appear."

Actually, the semantics of the question is misleading since neither is darker than the other; they're exactly the same.

To me A looks much darker in the first pic.  The second pic showing A next to B looks like they changed the color of A to me.   ???

I was with you.

I actually saved the original picture to my computer, opened it with Paint, and moved a section of A to B for a side-by-side comparison, which proved two things:
1.) A&B are, indeed, the same.
and
2.) I haven't got too much going on in my life.

Me too :-\

But my question after watching their moving illustrations is, why do the other dark and light looking checkerboard pieces w/o the red dots stay dark and/or light looking while the shadow passes?
