Poverty will always exist, to what degree is the question.

I was listening to a Meg Wittman radio ad the other day, so I'm assuming the information is accurate.

It said that California has 14% of the nations population but draws 33% of the welfare funds in the nation.

CA is a phenomenon, representing somewhere in the 12%-15% of the national GDP yet still a pathetic state by the numbers...hmm, I wonder if it's all the progressive/socialist thought.

Anyway, the point of the original post was simple, gov programs do nothing to aid in poverty reduction...people do that, not gov.

Social programs extend poverty, because they allow the poor to keep existing as they are, generation after generation.  The only thing that breaks this cycle is education, when the children of the poor can pursue a worthwhile career and become productive members of society.

there's a bigger picture to why that is and it is a picture that every president has understood even if they don't say it.

One small example:  If you bump the minimum wage up, the corporations just bump up their prices to adjust for the new income.  It's a zero net gain for the worker.  That's why I've always kinda had a " " expression on my face when they attempt to raise the min wage.  It's kinda a joke lol...  It's going to work that way across the board. Lets say they got rid of all food stamps tomorrow, you would actually see the price of food drop.  Now this is just a fact.  It's actually a fact that supports both of our opinions but one I think you only see one side of.

Now imagine where we are with every corporation trying to outsource everything they can...

You're right, they should be cut off.  Because as I have just illustrated and Arnold has observed, it doesn't and wont do anything to help the worker.  But that's not remotely close to the end of the story or what is wrong or what needs to be done or who is doing what they probably shouldn't ethically be doing etc...  If you really want to talk about it, it's going to take way more than this little point to do so.

oh, I don't remotely presume to have the answer to the problem.  My only cause here was to show/say there is a bigger picture to the problem, much of which is not usually addressed.  My only thoughts on it are that it's a bigger issue than just simplifying it to a bunch of lazy low lifes on welfare.  There is actually more to consider than that simplification of the matter.  I know we rednecks like it simple, but still, simple is not always the path to truth and solutions.  sometimes it requires hard work and hard thinking.

Agreed. My sister works for the social security dept. which I give her hell about all the time. According to her, almost every person that comes in there is 100% capable of working. They either simply don't want to or they do work but still enjoy collecting a check. She said the latter happens all the time but because of the incompetence of government, by the time they catch it, the individual has already collected an unemployment check for years and even if they are caught, because of all the red tape, it can be very hard at times to kick them off...even if they have a job!!!

They just caught some woman in the next town from me that had been collecting social security on forged documentation for TEN YEARS. Went to court, she claimed 'poverty' and got off with 2 years probation. Not even a weekend of jail time because 'the jail was full'.

I worked with several illegals a few years back, and every single one of them was on SSI for 'disabilities'.  It was unreal.  The government never even checked up on any of them.

It's criminal what the poor have done to society in this country. If there is some legitimant reason you can't function, then fine, get help. In my experience, 95% of 'victims' are either simply too lazy to support themselves on an even minimal level, or are con men.

Public workers are only intereted in keeping their overpaid jobs and rarely, if ever, pursue the rampant fraud that is taking place.

I don't see what is so wrong about making homeless and career 'victims' live in work camps. They could learn about hard work and actually EARN some of the handouts they sop up, and society could reap some return from the social and financial drain they cause.

No I am not in favor of genocide or killing people.  Thats' insane.   I advocate policies that will hopefully break the cycle of welfare dependency and encourage or mandate work if you plan on getting taxpayer assistance.

We should have a welfare system.  Just not one as bloated and abused as the one we have.  There rare honest hard working people who do need help occasionally.  We need massive re form and a way to put some of these people to work.  Drub testing is good to.  And stiffer penalties for wolf fraud.

One of my friends works for a drug company and is all around the bronx.   Check this out.  Medcaid mothers teach their kids how to fake certain ailments and illnesses knowing the "scrips" the doctors will prescribe and then sell them on the street.  If the doc suspects anything they threaten to call the authorities saying the doctor is racist is not giving out the drugs for them to sell. 

You guys have no idea the scams, fraud, and other crap the lowest elements of society are pulling on us.  I would end 99% of welfare for all but the most able bodided and put the bums in boot camp if they did not shape up.
