I suggest smoking and watching "into the wild"

It makes you wanna give up on  everything thats "normal" in life. And go neanderthal up in dis bitch.

Luckily by the time I wake up the next morning those feelings are gone lol.

Has anyone here done it? Just to try and survive in the woods without food? Obviously you need food, shelter, heat and water. Lately I've been watching some survival shows like "Survivorman", "Man vs Wild", "Alone in the wild" and "Dual Survival".. all awesome shows. Makes me want to go and do this for a few days just try fishing/catching food, building a shelter with my own hands and creating a fire with old methods to keep warm. I definitely want to try it sometime..

Was it Survivorman where the guy ate undigested food out of bear dookie?  I'll pass.

Fun Fact: You can eat the meat or organs of anything with fur or feathers, except the liver of a Polar Bear which contains toxic levels of vitamin A.

4 years ago I walked for almost 6 hours true the jungle of Borneo, alone, and didn't encounter any headhunters.

I've done a two day survival ex... it was shit.

We had to make a shelter, get a fire going and then kill and cook a chicken. We couldn't get our fire going for ages and when we did it never got beyond the twig stage. This meant we were constantly looking for wood for the fire and while doing this I managed to chop the end of my thumb off. When we got back to camp most of us went down with diarrhea and vomitting (We were on the ranges the following week and I was still quite ill with the stomach bug; this resulted in me shitting myself during a troop thrashing by our DS).

Good times!

Did it little in Iceland....haha, sounds worse than it was, as it was during the glorious 50 degree summer!  It rained, cold and was not much fun.  And it wasn't total survival as we had MRE's and water.  It was more just battling the elements.

Nice, what made you try it in Iceland? I was thinking here in Norway maybe in the summer.. try get some wild edibles/fish etc.. what did you eat in Iceland except for MRE's?

I was stationed there, so it wasn't really a choice.  ;D  We caught some fish, ysa if I remember correctly.  They were pretty decent.....we were along the coast, not inland on the glaciers where it would have been much worse.

Thank you for your service.  :)

It wasn't much of a service; It only lasted 14 months due to snapping my leg.

However, I'm going back in at the end of this month. :D So hopefully it will go a lot better this time.

Sounds awesome, what equipment did you take with you? What kind of climate were you in? Why did your fire fail?

We were just in combat jackets, trousers and boots and we were allowed to carry a knife and a survival tin - the contents of which was a flint striker thing, candle, lots of cotton wool and a snare (fuck knows what I expected to catch with that). The climate was England in December, which is pretty cold and wet.

Tbh, I think the reason the fire failed was due to not paying attention during lectures on how to build a fire and the fact that we were completely fucked - We had been doing day and night navigation for the previous four days carrying full kit.

ps: dual survival is a great show, one of them is a an army sniper and the other one a bush hippie lol

I caught part of that show before.  It was actually pretty good.

Just started takeing up camping and collecting stuff for a end of the world type of scenario. I visit a lot of the survival forums and read alot. I have a decent size stash of food, weapons, and ammunition. It's become a fun hobby that might prove very useful.

You will really enjoy this article xerxes

It's an article about a young trappers first season in Alaska.

How did you grill the chicken without a fire? (or was it just enough?) Just one snare? Maybe for rabbits or something :S? Sounds tiring man

We cooked the chicken in an old paint pot we had been given by the DS. We suspended it over the fire (when we eventually got it going a little bit) and boiled it in water from the river at the bottom of the wood. River water and undercooked chicken may have been a contributing factor in our going down with stomach bugs the following week.

Yeah , the snare was for a rabbit, but I didn't have a chance of catching one as (a) it was the winter and there was no rabbits about and (b) the snare hadn't been weathered, so thumper would've smelt humans on it and avoided it like the plague.
