We cooked the chicken in an old paint pot we had been given by the DS. We suspended it over the fire (when we eventually got it going a little bit) and boiled it in water from the river at the bottom of the wood. River water and undercooked chicken may have been a contributing factor in our going down with stomach bugs the following week.

Yeah , the snare was for a rabbit, but I didn't have a chance of catching one as (a) it was the winter and there was no rabbits about and (b) the snare hadn't been weathered, so thumper would've smelt humans on it and avoided it like the plague.

any fish in the area?  That is the way to go.  We just wrapped them in the used MRE pacakages and buried them in the fire coals.  They turned out very good.

Obviously you need food, shelter, heat and water.

Sexual release is also a requirement, long term.  Give Outward Bound a call.  You'll learn a lot about yourself that weekend.

We were fairly close to an icelandic fishing village, it was suggested we should raid it and take it from the viking invaders.... ;D

We had been told that we should use the chicken entrails as bait for fish and if it had been for a longer period of time we would have probably given it ago.

However, we had a chicken between each syndicate of four to last us a day and a bit; so it was just a case of grin and bare it and wait for the transport home to arrive.

I was stationed there, so it wasn't really a choice.

Me too.  I loved it.

Has anyone here done it? Just to try and survive in the woods without food? Obviously you need food, shelter, heat and water. Lately I've been watching some survival shows like "Survivorman", "Man vs Wild", "Alone in the wild" and "Dual Survival".. all awesome shows. Makes me want to go and do this for a few days just try fishing/catching food, building a shelter with my own hands and creating a fire with old methods to keep warm. I definitely want to try it sometime..
Try it for a night, you wont be able to post and no hoes will be around. I forsee withdrawal symptoms and a run back to the house shortly but a good thought to get away from this fucked up world.  8)

I guarantee you Survivorman is filmed in someones back yard. He isn't a true survivor. He brings stuff with him like water, etc. A true survivor will live off the land.

ROFLAMO

some of you guys gotta spend atleast one night in a tent before you do any of this shit.

I spent alot of time tenting growing up. However I would never do it freestyle unless I had someone who knew the ropes. Out door survival is serious shit. It takes years of pratice to get good at this shit. Making a fiire with sticks requires knowing the right sticks/rocks to use. Surviorman is an expert the dude knows his shit, and had to quit doing the show from all the strain it put on him.

I'm a newfie(Vinland west norjway/ireland etc) my people are obessed with moose hunting it's our provincial sport. Along getting drunk in the woods and getting drunk on a boat, it's pretty much the only things we do. Hence my lack of grammar, and interest outside of being big.

Heres one of our drunk trips into the wild.

Agreed as soon as that camera goes off he cooks himself a huge steak and baked potato. Problalby has power bars shoved into all of his pockets. Imagine being in the woods for as long as he does barely eating anyting and working hard to get fire going ect. You would come back 20 pounds thinner. Guy never looses weight. I would look like a monkey especially not being able to shave, bathe, ect.

He goes for a week at a time. The first thing you do before going on a trek is bulk eating. He quit doing the show for health reasons, even though he was making a mint.

All seriousness, but the worst part of survival in the woods is all the walking, which leads to fucking "crotch rot"...and if you're constantly wet from rain, it just won't go away.  Better hope you're in shape before you have to trek for miles in the bush/desert/tundra.

How come nobody asked for Fat Panda's point of view on this yet? He's a true survivor and the guy will never get caught unprepared for those kind of situations. I don't know what he went through but it must have been hell. Imagine carrying constantly the Ritz's sunday brunch buffet under his skin wherever he goes.

You dry, at all costs, being wet ain't an option. I dono it's easy in subartic climates.

He would have enough fat reserves to last the winter???  ;D

C'mon, the man is a beast, you have to acknowledged that. He'd survive a new Ice Age wihtout blinking.
