Even though I watch some of the games, I agree with your point.  Some people seem to know players' statistics better than their children's names, immunization dates, etc.  The ones that really irk me are the ones that phrase their favorite teams' accomplisments in the first person:  "We should win Sunday..."  Oh, brother

I grew up in GB, WI and it was awesome having the Pack as part of the city's culture.  What was weird was to move to a college football town and hear them talk like that.  I'm like, they're just fucking kids, WTF cares?  To me it's like if I was back in GB and on friday night I was walking up to people going "yeah we're going to kick their asses" and it turned out I was talking about my former high school.

I watch football because it has a lot of strategy, athleticism and amazing plays...it's "fun" to watch. I will admit some people go overboard with it and invest way too much emotionally in what is just a game, after all....but you can say that with just about anything

I like when people assume that just because you are male, that you somehow are interested in these games.

The other day someone totally unknown at the gym asked me, "Who is winning the game?". I replied, "The queers of course".   He didn`t like that.

Another instance I can remember went down in similar fashion.  It went like this:  "I can`t wait for the BIG game today". To which I said, "What game?".  The man I could tell instantly hated me after that failed attempt at (bonding?) and information.  I am sure he thought I was a homosexual of some sort when the true irony is that he is the one lusting after black men in tight pants chasing each other and their balls around.  If anyone is a homo, its the people who watch these sorts of things.  Its a way of expressing their man love openly but not overtly so to speak (in some cases anways).

1. If I don't know a stat, trade or score of almost any sport, I ask my wife as we are both heavily into most sports.

TA's inability to follow sports like football likely affects his ability to interact on a very basic level with other men. Honestly, I have a rather passive interest in sports now, as opposed to my high school and late teens-to-late twenties years. At this point, outside of mma, I keep up with all the major sports simply for the small talk it provides in the office and with some of my more casual male acquaintances.

What happened to the Yankees the previous night, or whether The Jets will win their division after this weekends performance, or how LeBron, D-Wade and Bosch looked in their debut...that's what the guys will be talking about at work all day, and even though I really don't give a shit anymore, if I didn't keep up I'd be left out of the small talk and look like an anti-social douche.

Sports are the small talk fallback option for men, whereas for women its celebrities or fashion, or some other crap.
