You rarely if ever use machines to isolate a joint injury. Ach, you said that you used mostly machines when you did this which proof of what I've been saying for years. If it is a rotator cuff tear you need to find out the degree of the (centimeter) tear and see if it warrents surgery. Since the 4 muscles of the rotator are, in fact stabilizers bodybuilding type training rarely focuses on joint integrity (out of site, out of mind).

No one said 'living the dream' was easy ....

I would prescribe you to just hit the treadmill in the meant time and give your shoulder much need rest to heal, otherwise your just going to keep seeing how far you can push yourself with out the injury ever fully recovering.

The Arthrogram and MRI is supposed to idenfify if its a Labrum tear or a problem with the rotator cuff!

Maybe I'm freaking myself out by reading about people's different Labrum tears.  I'm a bit nervous, and reaaally just don't want to get surgery! ugh

If you don't have any pain at rest or limited range of motion, it's more likely a labrum tear. If so, surgery isn't mandatory and if you cut back on the heavy weights, it's not likely to get worse.

Bro, not to scare you but the arthrogram hurts like hell. They inject dye into the shoulder joint and then conduct the MRI. The initial injection is painful for a few minutes then subsides. The dye is needed to locate any tears (especially in the Labrum), which are hard to see using a standard MRI (Xray will not show tears). Sounds like you have a good doctor as most do not order the arthrogram just the MRI. You may just have impingement, which can be cleaned up with arthroscopic surgery (same with Labrum tears).I have been there a few times. Good luck!!

It's tough to say man, how small is your nose?  Its an important factor!

Thanks lizzy, I'm hoping it will just be somethign minor that doesn't require surgery, really really hoping!

Do you have pain when you do dumbbell side lateral raises? Any pain when you do front raises? Do you have any pain when you move your neck all around?

Describe the pain- is it sharp? dull ache? Where exactly is the pain? And does it radiate anywhere? Down your arm, into your fingers? If so, which side of your arm? which fingers? etc...

Does your shoulder get caught in any specific movement? If you try to move in a full range of motion are you able to without a problem?

Did you have any specific trauma to your shoulder? Hurt in in the gym all of a sudden and now it aches? Or is this a slow gradual type of deal?

Xrays are really only sensitive for fracture and it doesn't sound like a broken bone... but unfortunately most insurance companies will deny coverage of an MRI if an xray hasn't been done first.

Do you have pain when you do dumbbell side lateral raises? No Not at all, did Side lateral two days ago to failure pretty intensely and didn't feel any pain

Any pain when you do front raises? I don't do front raises

Do you have any pain when you move your neck all around? No not at all

Describe the pain- is it sharp? dull ache? The pain only occurs on certain movements like barbell bench press and military press and its a SHARP pain, not unbearable but pretty bad

Where exactly is the pain? Feels like sorta in the center/front but deep in

And does it radiate anywhere? Down your arm, into your fingers? If so, which side of your arm? which fingers? etc No does not radiate at all anywhere its concentrated in one area...

Does your shoulder get caught in any specific movement? If you try to move in a full range of motion are you able to without a problem? Hurts during bench but not all the time, I was doing 275 for 7 and it was OK, but feels like my arm may come off at any moment, and with military press definitely can't get full range of motion, I go down to my chin, no way to go down all the way to my chest

Did you have any specific trauma to your shoulder? Hurt in in the gym all of a sudden and now it aches? Or is this a slow gradual type of deal? No trauma, been gradually getting worst, although the doctor asked if I played football and I did in high school 10 years ago and i did get hit pretty bad in my shoulder once, never got treated for it or anything but the doc said maybe that has something to do with it, but this was 10 years ago and it hadn't really bothered me until recently

Xrays are really only sensitive for fracture and it doesn't sound like a broken bone... but unfortunately most insurance companies will deny coverage of an MRI if an xray hasn't been done first. I did an X-ray today, Friday is the Arthrogram and the MRI

Thanks for your help!

I had an arthrogram done on my knee.  Would say it was more unpleasant than painful.

So I've been having a lot of shoulder pain recently while training, specifically during bench press, and military press.  Its been getting worse in the last two weeks, so I went to the doctor today.  They did some X-rays - turned out ok there, asked a few questions, and now I'm scheduled for an Arthrogram / MRI to check for a Labrum tear or problems with the rotator cuff!

Blah!

Anyone ever have an arthrogram?  What should I expect?

Thanks boys and girls!

Talk about a coincidence as I am having the exact same issues.  It started last week during and following my chest workout.  I started taking ibuprofen and after a couple days of that it seems to go away but again on chest day today, immediately it started to hurt again.  From doing some reading, I think it might be bicep's tendonitis:

http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00026

Please keep us posted on how it goes at the doc as my medical insurance sucks (small company) and I'm trying to avoid going.

As someone else mentioned I am planning on resting it all next week and just doing cardio, legs, and a few other basic exercises (deads, etc) that I can do and see if that helps while keeping taking the ibuprofen.

ACH, I once had an unseated biceps tendon that was similar in experience to what you have, but the shouler is a VERY complicated joint and it could even be more than one problem.  Did the doc advise you to lay off training to get the inflamation down for your tests?

No his exact words were, "You do not need to stop traininy, keep going but take it a little bit easier"  basically just telling me to lighten up the weights!  He prescribed some prescription pain killers and told me to take as needed!

Hey, go with the doc, I'm just a little surprised as most of them are always wanting everybody to "take it easy."  Good luck, as I know shoulder problems are a true pain to deal with.

Will keep you informed for sure!!  I gotta train chest tonight actually so I'm gonna try to avoid the excersises that do hurt it!  Arthrogram tomorrow and hopefully results sometime next week!

The doc actually also checked my bicep but said they were fine nothing effecting the shoulders

Yeah I was very surprised that he didn't tell me to stop lifting for x weeks.

Had MRI for bad shoulder about a year ago. Turned out i had a torn labrum/slab tear. I decided against surgery. I still cannot really barbell benchpress or barbell shoulder press, however i can do just about everything else without pain. Once in a while it acts up and affects my bicep as well. Without surgery i know it will never be 100% again. However sometimes fixing a torn labrum can actually make your shoulder worse after the surgery, so im not about to risk it.
Good Luck. Hopefully its just a strain

It's not that bad.. You see it filling up your shoulder.. Small needle, nothing major though..
