Ever noticed bodybuilders who didn't deadlift had poor backs?
« on: October 07, 2010, 05:09:04 PM »
I have noticed guys like Kevin levrone and lee priest, had sub par backs, and in there videos i don't even remember seeing them deadlift. Whereas guys who deadlift like Joj have far better backs, mid trap thickness, once phil heath incorporated deadlifts his back has come up tremendously, and is one of the best today.
Why are bodybuilders scared of bending over?

Kevin's back wasn't sub-par he did bring it up quite a bit from when he first turned pro but sub-par is really not accurate.

Non deadlifters have skinny necks, weak grip, and shake hands like fairy ballerinas. To be a true alpha man you gotta have a monster grip to back up the way you look.

Lee Priest did deadlifts in his Blonde Myth video. Not from ground but still deadlifts (in rack). So leave great Lee alone.
Good possibility is he did plenty of deadlifts in his earlier years as he was also heavy squatter.

I think here in GB instead we have our own pro who praised against any serious movements like squats, benchp and probably deadlifts (can't remember)...
You can discuss whether he had great back  :-\
Better than mine for sure but then again I'm not making my living out of it and never had.

Lately i prefer to do an extra exercise for my lats instead of deads. I have a good lower back, no need for me to make it better.

I don't recall Tony Pearson or Mike Christian being noted for their deadlifts. Both men, especially the "Jet Man" has great backs. But, Pearson has gone on record as stating, "While doing deadlifts, you might just think you are working the back, but you're working the entire body."

Nah. You can make that up with weighted hyperextentions & stiff-legged dumbbell lifts.

exactly..........deadlif ts are a full body compound exercise.  particularly when you are doing them heavy, your back is being worked little

the way i have found deadlifts to work for back, it 3/4 deadlifts on the smith machine when you start towards the top of the movement and really focus on squeezing and contracting the back muscles...........

the first part of the movement is legs and glutes......so to me, it is irrelevant during a back workout......for a bodybuilder anyway

I did this version in a power rack.....we called them top deadlifts.....and I agree.  You can focus purely on the back much better.  Don't get me wrong regular deads are awesome, especially for athletes, but I prefer the tops for back.

I think it's safer this way but a Getbigger once told me off for doing my deads from the top.  "Then you're not doing deadlifts."  Fine by me.  Whatever.
