The very first gym I ever trained at was this 4 car garage converted into a gym. It had a boxing ring and alot of makeshift equipment made from gears and pulleys and rims. An old man and dads from the neighborhood made it. Every kid from high school down in that neighborhood trained there. The old man was an alternate on the Olympic team in the shot putt and was a retired physician. Everyone had a small notebook that went into a box. Every night he would go and write your next days workout based on the reps and weights you did that day. He was basically your own personal trainer. So the next time you train you would just do what exercises he wrote down and reps and weight. It was really cool He charged $20 a month (back in the 70's). Anyway, there were maybe 120 members who came religiously throughout the month. He called everyone of them 'Charles" My brother and a few of his friends were the oldest and most respected and everyone did what they said. We had a few guys who benched over 400 and one guy who did 460 and played at USC. We even had a few pro boxers come by and train. It was truly a get down gym. Anyway, Doc (the old mans name) called me Keith one day. Man I went crazy inside because he called me by my real name. I told everyone at school the next day and everyone I saw for the next week. I never heard him anyhone by their real name before. Man that gym I wish I had photos of. I know there are many out there cause I have seen them. If I can get any I will post. You'll see what a gym used to look like |
