Who here lets their dog sleep on their bed sometimes?
« on: October 17, 2010, 03:06:04 AM »
I do - I love my dog and am fine with him jumping on the bed (provided he is clean and washed etc). But some of my friends (especially guys who don't have dogs) think its gross and unhygenic - what do you guys think?

Well, when I first got him it was only the floor he was allowed on. Then I gave in to letting him on the couch. And before you know it, I gave in to letting him on the bed as well. He's really clean - no "dog smell" and quite cuddly :)

agreed dogs should be a part of everyones life. Usually a man who has a cat is a homosexual or serial killer.

My dog doesn't smell.  I put a clothes pin on his nose.  Seriously, a dog in your bed?  That's disgusting.  Even if your dog was washed once a day like most humans it's gross.  I hope you wear a flea collar.

In terms of "raising" a dog, letting it sleep on the bed is a big mistake. Don't be fooled, the dog doesn't give a shit about you, it wants to sleep on the bed for other reasons.

Dogs are all about dominance and hierarchy. Sleeping on higher ground is something that a more dominant dog would do and you don't want to give your dog the wrong impression. You're always better off by putting down your dog to make it the beta in your "flock". No violence/beating necessary, just small everyday things like making sure it never sleeps on couches/chairs, always eat before it does, walk in front of it in doorways etc. There's more to it but by assuring that the dog consider you the leader you usually get rid of some annoying behaviors and also makes it easier to train.

Our Boxer sleeps on the chair in our bedroom on a blanket.  When I'm gone she will sleep with my wife at the end of the bed.  She's short haired and an inside dog.  One of the cleanest dogs around.  She never smells.  Our little shi tzu also sleeps with us at the edge of the bed.  Again she is a very clean dog.  One thing as well NEITHER of our dogs shed.  I could never imagine having a dog like a Husky, Lab or Golden Retriever sleeping in someone's bed.  They are dirty and stinky for the most part like many long haired dogs.  Malamutes and Huskies are down right fucking dirty.  I would never even have those in the house.

This is bullshit in for a variety of reasons.  One being many dogs were bred for specific reasons.  For example shi tzus were bread back in Asia to be actual foot warmers for Royalty and they are companion dogs.  It has nothing to do with dominance.  Also our Boxer although an Alpha female will gladly sleep on the floor or anywhere else we tell her.  She happens to prefer the couch downstairs and our bed mostly because she likes to be next to us and she is very much a people dog.  I know plenty of dogs that are put in cages every night and they are the most disobedient dogs around.  I wonder if you even fucking own dogs.   ::)

yeh, i see your point

but im not really about establishing dominance over my dog, i dont even like that word

i consider her more of like a friend, maybe a retarded friend........i cant tell that with my dog ( i dont even like saying MY dog ) that her sleeping on the bed is more about affection......you can tell by the way she cuddles into my girlfriend or my stomech like she is being protected

but i understand that with some dogs, if you dont establish dominance, they will start doind destructive shit and walkin gall over you

i just dont really witness it much, because there is just an implied dominance, she knows i am a male and knows she is weaker then me........she fucks with my GF (who is the true owner of the dog) a LOT more, casue she is  a girl

thats horrible. you should be glad your daog hans't run over you then lol.

uoi can still be their BOSS in their friend.

Dogs are a PACK animal and you should aaaalways be their leader. If not, they are your. Always walking ifront of your dog etc, having the dog to your Side, NEVER pulling the rope.

You're the typical ignorant dog owner that like to think of dogs as some weird form of humans and not what they truly are, DOGS. Yes, some breeds have less of a tendency to try to be alpha sure, but I guarantee you, given permission even those dogs would take on a leader role. The instinct is always there which is not necessarily a bad thing all the time, use it to your advantage instead.

And just because you can command a dog to do something it doesn't mean it consider itself beta. Their mind doesn't work like that. Behaviorism and flock dynamics are not the same thing.

You don't become and alpha by putting dogs in cages. Are you retarded?
